Well, perfect would have been the undercarriage working properly but for any less than perfect landings I would want that pilot flying the plane. Even turned the engines off before touchdown to limit damage to just the props.

@lonewolfhf - I would say 4:38 is a better point to pick up the whole landing sequence! A bit of a visual lead-in to any incident, wherever possible, helps to give a better picture. After all, in this case, it was the pilot's mastery in lining up his ailing aircraft for landing that gave him a much better outcome - he/she surely had little control once they had impacted the runway at 4.47

I believe this sequence at 10:14 was made as part of a feature film, so it wasn't actually an 'accident', although it certainly gave that impression. The people running away were all part of the scripted action!

I thought that's what a license was for: Evidence that you know what you're doing. The only thing I've ever flown was R/C. But I've designed aircraft & read a few hundred NTSB accident reports. One of the most frequent causes of crashes is 'Failure to continue flying the airplane'. It's unfortunate that often pilots get so engrossed in dealing with a POTENTIAL fatal emergency that they fail to save the day simply by flying the aircraft. One of the most obvious examples, IMHO, is the death of about 9 parachutists, the death of the pilot, and the crash of the aircraft. The plane lost power on takeoff. The parachutists jumped without enough altitude to open their chutes. And the pilot spun in trying to turn back to the airstrip.......with a large empty farm field at the end of the runway. (That was the NTSB's observation, not mine.) There are dozens & dozens of these kinds of accidents. Much of it is just a human condition sort of thing.
@gnarthdarkanen7464
@gnarthdarkanen7464 Жыл бұрын
@@terrencefoley509 The license (ANY license) can ONLY EVER mean you've completed a series of classes, passing standardized tests and a final exam of some kind with a given lower limit (standard set by associated agencies) to your score(s)... What happens in practice is very much the same as in high school. Going to classes only really forces people to temporarily memorize most of the information given so they can regurgitate it on the tests... THEREAFTER it's quickly and easily forgotten. This is part of why Commercial Pilots have SO MANY standards to keep up, and so many training and testing sessions throughout their careers... Checkrides are scheduled at least tentatively, throughout their careers... and on top of that, they're required to log a "full cycle" of flying (noting especially take-off AND landing the plane) every 90 days... There are regular repeat sessions in the simulators, and with any write-up or a note on their competency made by a check pilot, quizzing senior, or otherwise aviation official, they'll be faced with a mandatory additional session for "re-training"... It's better than firing, most of the time, but there's a persistent need to keep the skills sharp by making them PERFORM the practices as well as regurgitate answers like on a test, written OR verbal. In General Aviation (private pilots and hobby flyers) the standards aren't so strict by rote. No company is banking on a given private license holder to keep from embarrassing them, losing faith of the public, or creating a marketing nightmare... SO nobody's breathing fire and brimstone down a private pilot's neck to make him or her DO the practice or ask any further questions, go to sims or even play simulator games at home... AND nobody much bothers to check when the last full cycle was practiced by a given General Aviator... If you're not competent, you're just going to crash when you get in over your head... AND arguably, at least in the States, the same can be said of a motorcycle license. Passing for the "minimals" to get a license does NOT mean you're safe to have on the road, EVEN with the MSF course. ALL they can really teach is the series of drills and practices that will refine your skills on a motorcycle, BUT after that 2-day course, you're ON YOUR OWN... Those who practice and work a little on their own, build skills and refine their techniques to continue doing better... Many DO go to further classes and courses and even track-days to get better with a motorcycle for the rest of their lives. AND the same is true of pilots... BUT just as many DO NOT... They assume that once they've been taught, they just "know" it... AND they carry on forth until the day comes that they simply aren't skilled or practiced enough to deal with the series of problems at hand... SO a person who went through the classes and regurgitated answers successfully is a glorified trained monkey with a stick in his hands... AND the one who pursues further training, practices and even recruits other pilots to come check his math and chat over his flight plans, even when he plans to take a trip alone, is the one who becomes a great pilot... AND he'll eventually get to more courses while advancing his skills and getting involved in bigger and more sophisticated (and expensive) aircraft. ;o)

Wilbur Wright did not 'drop out' of high school. He completed the curriculum, but due to his family relocating at about the time of his graduation, he never received his diploma. Orville DID drop out after completing 3 years of high school. This would have been noteworthy these days, but back then is was pretty common, and both brothers would have been considered fairly well educated
