Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Used to live next door to Royal Stukey., the designer and fabricator. I have watched him make these benches and helped with packing. Royal believes in making things highest quality possible. There is one feature to the bench that makes installing the legs easier to do, that I did not catch Ron mentioning. The plywood tops are cabinet grade, not your typical cheaper 5-ply plywood. I would not at all be surprised if Royal has made additional improvements to his benches, besides the polyurea top, since we were neighbors. The only shooting benches I have seen or used that are sturdier are concrete cast benches.

I judge the content of any you tube video by taking a quick look at the comments before I even watch the video. I watched 10 seconds of the video to see what was being recommended. Then I stopped it and went to the comments. I saw the $1,600 price mentioned on numerous comments, saw what Mr. Spomer was holding, and moved right along to other shooting bench videos. I knew right away that this bench rest is only for people that have more money than they know that to do with.

Love the bench, it is obviously a high quality product but man oh man, that is quite a bit of money for a bench. I wish restaurant tables were set on three legs instead of four. Three legs don't wobble, even if the floor is not level. Four legs is never stable. That's why this shooting bench is stable. However, $1400 samolians is too much. $1400 pays for numerous years of dues for my local rifle range. Ron, I love your channel.
@RonSpomerOutdoors
@RonSpomerOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Mark, glad you're liking the channel. What I love about the bench, aside from its obvious stability and durability, is the convenience. I don't have to wait for any range to open, wait for a range officer to grant permission to shoot, change targets, etc. Maybe it's just me, but I want access to a range and freedom to use it as I want when I want, even if that means using truck headlights to illuminate the target! Guess this is what one becomes by growing up on farm. Elbow room cried Daniel Boone!

I've read all of the comments below, and I agree with all of the DIY'ers you could build one similar, cheaper. But, very few would be able to build an identical copy for less than $1200 at least. Very well engineered and manufactured with quite a bit of welding and machine work. And I don't blame him for trying to make $200 or $300 per unit. Overall, it is one of the best designs I've seen, I would however, incorporate some type of adjustment on one of the front legs so you don't have to pack a 2X4 to level everything out. Thanks Ron, for bringing this bench for our consideration!

Yea, I just about fell over when I saw the price. With that said, I went to their website and this bench is made the old fashion way! These are nearly one off made, yes there is some production however, these folks are real machinists and there isn't a CNC punching out 100's of parts an hour. So, would I spend the money, yes if I had it. Ron is a great ambassador of quality, I suspect he gets this for advertising as he does many items. Well worth the money because of the craftsmanship, "OLD SCHOOL!"

Cracks me up , all the people whining about the price . "all you got to do is buy a piece of plywood and some pipe and weld er up" . Evidently these people people have never made anything of this quality . The engineering on the legs alone is pure genius . They think pipe threads would be good enough , Just Aint So !. I found this when I was looking for ideas on how to make my own portable bench , I ve got all the tools I would need to build a portable bench out of wood , and basic metal fab tools (No metal lathe or mill) but it would not be NEAR as stable as this bench . If I had the money to buy this I would not hesitate to fork out the dough , as I know I wont be able to make anything near as solid as this . Do you have any used beat up "seconds" without a top taking up space in the shop you want to part with , I would gladly take it off your hands . Or a kit that needs welded and painted ? All I got to say is , without even seeing one in person , that IS the ultimate shooting bench , Nice work .

Hey Ron, nice review. I am going to get one as soon as the price comes down a bit. My question is as follows. How do you get good groups when your rifle practically jumps off the rest by a few inches? it would seem that the table is not doing its job when a gun jumps that much. We shoot off BOG Deathgrips when we shoot prarie dogs , we barely clamp the gun, and they dont jump like the rifles in your videos. I am not being critical, it is just an obserevation and a question. Thanks for the content.

Ron. I have hell trying to comment on your channel. Did you make KZbin mad. It happens every time. Anyway. Great rest. I have some health issues so I'm putting in my own shooting range. Not for public but just for friends and family. I've made a couple of benches and they were good but they don't last in Oklahoma with the humidity and weather. Even covered it's tough on 2x6's. If you can get a couple of years your lucky unless you use treated lumber nd that's expensive and still warps. I'll be putting these (I plan on buying two now and another later) in concreat footings for level. I noticed you talking about the polyurethane coating over the wood. Any chance they might do a coating such as they do on spray on truck liners? Just a thought. I'll tell them I saw your vid when I contact them. Great job on reviewing the product. You hooked me like and old catfish...Ha. Please show the next one with the poly coating. I may just have the top sprayed on my own. Most people that are bitching about the price should realize that components have doubled and tripled in price. plus his manufacturing heating, electric, wages for help. All since Covid. Look at food prices! I bought one way back in the early 2000's. Still have the basis of the original model. However I shoot BPCR and I bought a bench top from Menards for 100 bucks and it is 5 foot long. Not as portable but is rock solid. And I made a waterproof cover for it and I leave it at the range all year around. One cannot build one as solid as his unless it is concrete. The free floating nut design is his patent and FAR better than threading pipe to collar solidly.
