The componant you really need is just Methylene chloride. If you can find a paint stripper that still has it it will work on powder coat. I use loctite sf 790 gasket remover when I have to redo a part. Its cheap and locally available.

Where do you get that at? I used the permatex on some atv wheels. It stripped the back but didn't do anything for the front.

Dont forget paint stripper is water neutralized and gasket remover leave residue

I’ve tried everything nothing works easy, there’s a product called RIM SRIP and it takes everything off just wash it and your done but it’s $2000 for 55 gallon drum and $700 for 5 gallon bucket way too much for diyer

The Permatex gasket remover used to contain the desired methelene chloride ! But it does not anymore ! BUMMER !

Yes and much better than permatex. I restore old 80’s BMX bikes so I paint strip a fair bit and a lot of tight spots and corners get frustrating. I was told of the gasket remover years ago and have tried a few different kinds. Permatex works but it’s a distant 2nd to the CRC stuff.

@@hendy4584 Is CRC gasket remover safe for cast aluminum wheels? In other words, when it's used and cleaned off, will the surface of the aluminum remain smooth or will it be pitted or corroded as a result of the chemical?

You could but I doubt you will be able to find it anymore. Looks like Permatex has switched to only selling low voc product and I am pretty sure that means it lacks the necessary MEK ingredients.

Can you just paint over a powder coated surface like say a bike frame ? Instead of the hassle of removing the powder coat .

You can but buying the spray to go over it is quite expensive forgot the name

You can also just use heat. PC disintegrates at 500*

Both are the same product, powder coat, vs. 4 coats of krylon, Im using the aircraft remover on my rims, I want the strongest stuff available

Thanks for the informative video. I just tried Rust-oleum Aircraft Remover on a black powder coated lower Harley fork tube. The first coat of Remover took off some powder coat here and there. The second coat of Remover took off a little more (about 30% of the total power coat). This was a high quality Ink Black powder coat from Prismatic Powders, and it was bonded very well to the fork tubes. Since nobody local in my Ohio town carries the Permatex gasket remover, I ordered 3 cans online to have on hand for the next time. I'll finish off this fork tube with the sandblaster just to get it done. Looking forward to trying the Permatex next time.

Like 50-60 people have died out of hundreds of millions in Canada and the US from misusing methalyne chloride products. Now we all have to suffer and were stuck with paint strippers and such that literally just don't work

Speaking of people that don’t know what they are doing. The word you were looking for a you can’t pronounce is methylene chloride. Not methanol or chlorine or anything whatever the hell you said. Also every coater out there will blast the mating surfaces. That is PCI standards if you know what that is. If a 2 mil profile ( that’s 0.002”) stops your gasket from sealing then you got junk Canadian tire gaskets or something is warped. It is your responsibility to let the coaters know exactly how you want it. Not they’re fault at all. Also if the part got powder coated then that means it stuck. Probably should learn something yourself before you bash other people’s work.
