picked up a 457 Varmint AT-ONE, changed to a Lilja 18 inch barrel with .043 headspace, zeroed the scope, using Eley Target 15 for 15 on a KYL .25" swinger at 50 yards. I purchased the CZ 457 Varmint model 3 years ago for $400. It has yet to disappoint, out shoots everything at the range. It favorite ammo is Aguila 22LR Standard, one hole groups are the norm!
@cacinaz8802
@cacinaz8802 Жыл бұрын
Josh, another great video. Between you, Cyclops, and Eagle Eye I have been hooked! However, to be fair you should compare the groups with the stock MTR barrel against that Lilja barrel. You talk about getting the best accuracy for the least money, but you then put a $500 barrel on it. BTW my first outing yesterday with my CZ 457 Varmint (not MTR barrel) returned several sub-MOA 5-shot groups. Indoor range at 25 yards. I did swap the trigger spring for a 12oz spring so pull weight is less than 1 lb. Put an Athlon Helos 4-20x50mm scope on it. Literally several one-hole groups. My reason for saying this is to give others a thought to try out the CZ stock configuration before spending more money for "diminishing returns" like you say. They might try some bolt shims for $12 to improve accuracy if they are not getting great accuracy out of the box. I don't plan to compete but the fun of shooting tight groups is worth the initial cost.

@@kennethmartinez3725 Ah, thanks. Watched that and it sort of proves my point that unless you want to compete at the highest level, or just want the absolute most accuracy possible, then it really is a case of diminishing returns. One tenth inch difference between the Lilja and the CZ MTR barrel - five, 5-shot groups each in the wind at 100 yards with different chasses and scopes. Use the CZ MTR stock and swap out the barrels.
@PursuitofAccuracy
@PursuitofAccuracy Жыл бұрын
The real difference cant be easily shown on video. The lilja is incrementally better than the mtr, yes. The lilja also is better and allows for the owner to adjust headspace. Its also been far more consistent day to day than the stock barrels for me. 22lr can be finicky at different temps, humidity, DA etc.

I've owned multiple 457's both in 16.5" and 20", all of which had MTR barrels with the exception of a 17 HMR I used to own. I currently own a 20" LRP and a Bergara B14R. Both go for pretty much the same price here in Canada. If I had to recommend one over the other, it would be the Bergara. It's just slightly better at 50 yds, but it also allowed me to install a Remingting 700 style trigger which beats the CZ's trigger system (stock or aftermarket) hands down.

@@PursuitofAccuracy Your perspective is interesting. I've owned several custom rifles based on the 700 platform, and was blown away by the CZ trigger once adjusted. I am impressed with your results. I would offer a different brand of rifle for your consideration. I have a Lithgow LA 101 in .22LR. It is standard straight from the dealer. The only things I have done to it are bedded the action, ensured the barrel is free floating (it was not properly when I got it), and replaced the trigger springs with a lighter set. The barrel is stock standard, so my slight modifications did not cost anywhere near what yours did. I have only been doing bench rest for less than 5 years and am 69 years old. I did do some hunting in my teen years on a farm, but nothing for over 45 years before taking up bench rest. The range I shoot at is always windy and it is mostly just a matter of how varied it is. We shoot 50 and 100 yards. My best score was 250/250 with 11 centers out of a possible 25. That day, and on other occasions, I outshot the fancy target rifles and all their expensive gear. My scope is from ZeroTech and cost $800 Australian. My Lithgow makes me look a whole lot better. Blessings from Australia.

I agree with you, especially if you don't need a high performance barrel! My factory 20.5 in. MTR barrel turns in average 100 yard 5 shot groups using an obscure ammo that I came across, "Top Shot", that measures .719! It produces the occasional flyer, but I can live with that. I'm still considering a lilja barrel, but since I am only competing with myself, I'm not sure that I want to spend the money!

@@rt66rc86 that’s awesome ! There are a lot of great shooting CZ barrels out there . But at .7”, you won the lottery too! I hate to admit this , but I bought the Lilja for two reasons :1) this was a project gun and it was in my original vision to use it with the mdt xrs chassis , 2) my 161/2” barrel shot better than I could hope, but I just couldn’t warm up to the barrel extending only 1/2” beyond the end of the chassis… I didn’t like the look . If I’d have had a 20” CZ barrel that shot as well, I probably wouldn’t have changed anything . But I don’t regret the Lilja at all . I did get improvement at 100. Josh, serious Noob question... CZ's MTR rifles seem to have one "big thing," their "match grade" chamber. I presume, once you replace the barrel, that is no longer a feature. I guess my question is, do you need to spend "MTR" cash if you are going to build a rifle around the CZ 457 action/magazines? Are there other MTR features that make it (using the law of diminishing returns) a better jumping off point for a rifle build than a standard 457 rifle (e.g. the CZ American or the Pro Varmint)? Terrific video! I'm considering getting a 457 for fun at the range. My local range only goes out to 200 yrds, but I might be able to find one for longer distances. I haven't been able to find an MTR locally, although there are some other versions of the 457 available. Is there a good reason to insist on the MTR? If I really like this type of shooting, I would consider getting something like an MDT chassis and other upgraded parts in the future as funds permit, but I'd like to limit my initial expenditure, as I haven't done this type of shooting before. I'd appreciate any advice!

Ps. A few of my friends have a Tikka, some with another frame but they shoot the same groups, also we have a misused CZ 452 at the club and this is also shooting as straight as it can. The big difference I see is those guys with a custom rifle are indeed shooting better, but here we have the egg and chicken story, most of them have the gun because they shoot 3 or 4 times a week and are just a better shot by doing it a lot and have a lot of fun by tweaking and tinkering their rifles. Others, who don’t shoot that much are just like us mediocre shooters and got beaten by us. A general rule is when you want to be at the top, you have to put in the hours.

@WoW Guy hmmm...i will have to disagree. If you are doing precision work off the bench at 50 or 100 it is perfect. Why would I need a large FOV? Infact if you are shooting ARA I think the Sightron Sii 36 x 42 is your minimum choice. Most shooters are going 45x45 fixed. So I would have to disagree. Now, that said, if you are shooting NRL or something..then yeah that scope is going to hinder you with FOV/Target Aquisition and holdovers. And shooting .22lr much past 100 the sightron (save having an MOA rail) won't have enough dial to get on target). I also have a Mueller 8 - 32 x 44 Target Dot which I like much less than the Sightron. I also have an Athlon Argos 6 - 24. X 50. I like that scope a alot..bit it is FFP and the reticle is too large for precision work
