Personally, I quite enjoy a nice plasticky/rubbery note in my sherried whiskies. =) Fun stuff, guys.

Whilst Dan wasn't a big fan I really didn't find it too off-putting. We had been drinking this a few weeks back when I did a tasting for some friends and in that flight everyone loved it! I'm looking forward to drinking it again on its own to explore and see how different it comes off 😉👍

Nice job. A lot of reviewers only talk about the sweet raisins and cherry/dark fruits of sherry bombs but not many mention the contrasting sour fruit notes which are very characteristic of actual sherry. The rhubarb sourness comes from the yeast which plays a major part of sherry making and is as much a part of the sherry experience as all those dark fruits.

You should do more of these. These blind test videos are the most honest, most revealing. Nice. There’s a lot of value to this one.

Thanks Jon - I always find blind tastings throw a curve ball at me! I've had some whiskies blind which have really thrown me, to the point I haven't even thought it was a whisky I owned 😜 So I totally get that relief when there seems to be some consistency haha.

Great insightful vlog. Auchentoshan Triple Wood is an interesting whisky. I bought a couple of bottles last year. I put it in a bourbon blind tasting last year as a red herring. The guys loved it. When they found out it was a lowland scotch they were amazed. I would defo buy again if I saw it
@WhiskyGeek5 жыл бұрын
It definitely is interesting haha! I used it as part of a tasting a few weeks ago and it was really well received by everyone. Although Dan wasn't a fan of the off-note I really didn't mind it - will be interesting to revisit again on its own and see how evident that is. Would be interesting to have it slipped in to a bourbon line up! 🥃👍

Great video Ben and interesting test. Must agree that for the price point, Tullibardine I think is underrated (fan of the 228 also which can be picked up a certain points of the year very reasonable) and the Bunna, which I have a few bottles and has enough difference from the 12 to stand on it's own (and again can very picked up UK supermarkets for ~£26 fairly regular).
@WhiskyGeek5 жыл бұрын
Yeah big fan of the 228 Burgundy too. Unbelievable value when you can find them under £30 in a supermarket. Same can be said for the Stiuireadair which you reminded me to check, and it is indeed on offer for £26 again so thank you 😉 Cheers Andy 🥃👍

ive walked past that tulli 500 a million times in asda (only had the sovereign before - which was nice enough but not brilliant), now its top of my list if its scoring higher sherry points than dronach and bunna. it seems its the quiet/unflashy ones you have to watch for.
@WhiskyGeek5 жыл бұрын
I share your sentiments on the Sovereign;- nothing wrong with it but nothing special. That is essentially the starting point (~8 years old) which then goes into the Sauternes/Burgundy/Sherry casks for a further couple of years for these expressions. If you see either the Burgundy or Sherry finished on offer they're definitely worth a try! 🥃👌

Amazing how things can change...I'm surprised by the TULLIBARDINE position....I do not know that version, only the 225 (Sauternes) a few others, like the 1993...I also own...Cheers, Ben !
@WhiskyGeek5 жыл бұрын
I'm looking forward to revisiting them knowing what I'm drinking. Really surprised the GlenDronach's sherry flavours were lost and that odd tone to the Three Wood. Blind tastes always keep me on my toes 😜 Have you come across the 25 year old (currently ~28 year old stock)? I really love that one! The sherry is really good but the Burgundy finish really stands out to me - I think their spirit character plays really well with good wine casks 👌 The Sauternes is not my favourite but was right up Jo's ally. I've been eyeing up a nice looking Tullibardine single cask ... might have to jump on it.

@@WhiskyGeek Yeah the 12 yo has changed over the years (from the ancient stock, aged around 18-20 yo as I was told, bottled at 40 % -got still a few cl-to the new one, probably only 12 yo, bottled at 43 %) & got a bottle of the new one (maybe i should do a F 2 F on video ?) so might be not so surprising. About TULLIBARDINE, I've tasted only 8 expressions so far (5 ob, 3 ib) but don"t have the details right now before me, all I remember is that I've tasted a 1988 ob vintage but don't know if it was a 25 yo (?). What sometimes prevent me for enjoying a TULLIBARDINE (or an AUCHENTOSHAN) is a common geranium note they have sometimes...Hate the AUCHENTOSHAN 12 yo for instance, but love the 21 yo. About the TULLIBARDINE Sauternes, for me it is decent but too young & oaky
@WhiskyGeek5 жыл бұрын
@@GregsWhiskyGuide You've tried more Tullibardine than me then! Think I've had 5 but all official bottlings. Interesting what you're saying about the geranium note - I dont know flowers very well because I dont really like the smell of them! Couldn't comment on whether it's present in these whiskies or not! Though I don't find anything particularly floral about them.

Haha, always good fun to drink whisky with my bro 🥃👍 Poor Dalmore... I'm not sure I want to open the Cigar Malt or Port Wood now after this 12 year old. I bought them at a time I was enjoying the 12! Could be worth just trying to swap them for something else and avoid the dissapointment.

I know it's a port finish, not a sherry, but if you like one you are likely to like the other..., I really think the Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban is beatiful and reasonably priced!

Good shout, I think I like the Quinta Ruban more than the Lasanta! Yet to try the 14 year old version though. Can sometimes pick them up around £35 here when on offers 🥃👍
@harrr535 жыл бұрын
@@WhiskyGeek I have a bottle of the 14 and I think it's fantastic. The raisins and a little chocolate, and after a few sips the fruity notes of the Original are there at the back too. I never tried the 12 though. The Lasanta was a little underwhelming for me, I couldn't fault it in any major way, I just had higher expectations I guess.

Yeah I may have to do a round 2 - there's a few others people have suggested! That sherried Glen Moray has been on offer a few times in supermarkets around here and I've been tempted to give it a try... what do you make of it?
@MrChristopherMolloy5 жыл бұрын
@@WhiskyGeek generally speaking I like all of the Glen Moray Elgin classic line, they're ridiculously inexpensive and highly drinkable. That being said, I'm not a huge fan of finished whiskies, sherry or otherwise, so maybe I'm not the best judge, but my recollection is that the sherry influence is a bit thin, but noticeable, without any of the off-putting characteristics you can find in these sort of bottles. Cheers!

Should try it totally blind - get the ladies to pick 5 from a shedload that you've not picked so you don't look to confirm your pre-conceptions (like hunt the Bunny). Human nature says we will try to find as many clues outside of the glass as possible. My Mrs did me like a kipper the other night - put a Bowmore in a Bowmore glass (even the rubber inner tube smell didn't make me pick it as I was psyched out by the "obvious" double bluff). Your brother has some good notes that should serve him well in the future. Dalmore is pants. That said, looking forward to your Fettercairn tasting notes (baby sick may or may not feature). Paterson, eh. Much improved Tullibardine - I struggle to pick it since they dropped the putty/linseed oil signature smell. Liking your stuff. Slanjeevaurus🐢
@WhiskyGeek5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I always fall into the hole of trying to identify them, sometimes end up chasing my tail and pigeon-holing the flavour into a profile I'm looking for. I did this even worse in a recent Islay blind taste and got myself really confused! Dan always talks himself down but he is actually getting pretty good at pulling out some decent notes. I'm a little nervous over the Fettercairn now, when I bought it I didn't know it was under the Paterson umbrella. The good things I've heard about it seem to be coming from people who also like Dalmore so I could be at a loss there ☹ My little one has been educating me on the different types of baby sick so I will be able to give expert analysis on that now 😜 Cheers Mick 🥃👍

If Bunnahabhain do a rum finish they need to call it Bannahaven now. That did make me laugh quite a bit, but I dare say my first attempt at pronouncing it was probably far worse. It's not a line up I would have went for of reasonably priced sherried whiskies, especially having a Dalmore in there, but it was a fun video. I wonder if people visiting you are thinking, great I'm probably going to get some decent whisky to try, or Oh god, he's probably going to try and get me in one of his videos again! (Or a combination of both!)
@WhiskyGeek5 жыл бұрын
What would your line-up have been? Think these are available for pretty sensible prices and all RRP under £50. Think I paid £35 for the Dalmore 12, comes up on offer quite frequently. £27 for the Tullibardine, £26 for the Bunna, £29 Three Wood and ~£40 for the GlenDronach. Haha, they only end up in a video when they want to... I sometimes surprise them with experiments though! 😉
@thewhiskybowman5 жыл бұрын
@@WhiskyGeek Personally I wouldn't take sale prices into account when defining reasonably priced Ben. Reasonably priced, for me, is when it has a good RRP, if you get it in a sale even cheaper then so much the better. Unless it is one of those that is pretty much constantly "on sale" of course. I'm not sure what my line up would be, I'd need to think about it, but it wouldn't have had the Dalmore or the 3 Wood for certain.

Sweden recently got the Tullibardine The Murray Marsala finish which sounds delicious, tasting notes wise, and getting decent reviews from folks.
