It's fun to see someone else did the exact same thing I did to mine! Well, I shimmed out the existing binder bolts to the correct length and for whatever reason, mine doesn't squeak. I also left the sliders dry-I guess we'll see how that pans out, right? FWIW, I initially discovered the binder bolt 'shortness' while fixing my S18… they did the same thing then so at least they're consistent. Nice work, I do enjoy your stuff!

U you even own a s22 ... btw I love the stiff suspensionm as the master is garbage for a 6'4 240lbs guy like me.... I ride 75% trails jumps and the s22 is great ... I didnt buy this wheel for crusing on streeets *i do that to get to trails etc*** but if u are a bigger guy then this wheel is even better

thanks for the vid, Marty. i just ordered my hardware kit. hopefully it comes in at about the same time my cnc'd sliders come in, which i pre ordered almost a month ago. if it works well, i'll probably order more bolts, since it's definitely going to wear through the bolts over time, since there no bearing connection. A horrible of an execution on Kingsongs part of what i think is a better design than going with a stanchion tube based design.

Unfortunately for the S22, Kingsong didn't bother installing "contact bearings" at the shock's red arm pivot link locations in which it causes massive friction/binding, yes not free pivoting motion. Marty did the right thing to provide some free pivoting movement by installing the correct length or slightly longer (what is available) and adding nylon washers at the heads to make up for the slack. Now if this wheel was built right it would take a slightly smaller linkage bolt lengths and torque the linkage bolts to spec., we wouldn't want to smash the contact bearings and seize them, it'll defeat the purpose of having bearings. Kingsong could of also used sleeve bearings or flange sleeves.

Thanks a ton for the detailed video. Every 15 miles the suspension would start to seize; then I’d flush the channels with electronic contact cleaner from above; then snake some of the lubricant of the day; ride 15 miles; repeat. I ride from Boston North shore to south shore (2hrs) often and I’d have to stop in Dorchester to spray it out. The S-22 is truly an intolerable ride after 15 miles out-of-the-box. 2 nights ago my S-22 cut out while I was cruising at 35mph on flat road. Mine’s a new unit with the stator issue corrected so this is a NEW Issue. I wonder if debris in the control board housing is actually the culprit. (I’m ok btw-full armor and it was 2am so no cars out to run me over) RevRides is tearing it apart right now to diagnose, and hopefully rule out a widespread issue. Thanks again for the video.

Glad you are OK. Yeah, the S22 has been a disappointment in many ways. Still a really nice wheel if you have one that works. I've since added 3D sliders and will eventually move to CNC sliders.

Hi Marty, this was so interesting and I (thankfully) don't even own a S22. I say thankfully because there's no way I would want to go through all this on a new wheel, the rider shouldn't have to. You really put on a clinic for KingSong. On a positive note maybe KS will learn something from your video when they are upgrading this wheel.

@@davewood1982 I have v2 Master and v2 T4. Both ride beautifully and are very easy to work on if you have to. Marty mentioned how smooth the Master suspension is, and it feels like you're riding on a cloud.

"Dave" tried the dry lube but it immediately attracted dirt from trail riding. The real problem is KingSong's decision to use an open channel design that allows dirt easy entry.

Helped a local friend get custom 3D cast plastic pieces and wow was I astonished at the ride now. I can only describe it as plush. Did some fiddling and got better sized bearing rings made of delrin, but I'm certain you do not need bearings, just need a more suitable slider material with a low coefficient of friction. UHMW, delrin, PTFE, nylon, etc. We have another local buying the CNC sliders so I'm excited to try both next to eachother.

I may eventually go the CNC route but first I want to see what their lifespan is. I'm sure that the bearings provide a better ride but the solution needs to last for thousands of miles/kilometers.

@@ElectricUnicycles Glad you're waiting until later to install the CNC Rails. My intuition is telling me that I'd like to see the Slider mounts have a spring loaded rocker arm on a pivot between each of the 8 roller pairs. This would reduce unwanted slop in the system, which will should make riding more stable and less prone to vibrations. But that may be too complicated, yet still insufficient. I'll let the future data will decide. Thanks for retaining the original Slider setup, I'm looking forward to your 1000 mile review. I've got a feeling that gen1 and gen2 S22 models will be an awesome value in a couple years.

White lightning dry chain lube doesn't attract dirt like Greece or oil does and flakes off as you use it might be just the thing for your squeaks. I've been using it on bicycles for over a decade and wouldn't use anything else and much much cleaner . thanks for the video .

I thought so. Thank you. Looks to me like the petals can be dropped 3/4" down and the 3 allen screws on each side in the rear can slide down to the lowest setting of pre machined screw holes. Did you do this?

@@mufnman2003 I did not do this. For trail riding (where I prefer to use the S22) I want pedal clearance. Also, be aware that lowering or raising the pedals does apparently change how the suspension feels. Fortunately it's a simple change to make and reverse if needed.

I'm one of the unlucky ones with a knock on the motor and I am waiting of a replacement through my dealer but in the meantime I am doing this, along with a friend who's wheel is almost locked solid! We couldn't figure out why until you enlightened us to the linkage problem so big thanks from the NE UK crowd Marty. One thing I am also considering is changing my stock spring to a 500LB one and noticed you took yours down to 750 do you think this as helped with smoothing out the ride any? I'm a sub 150LB rider all up. Did you have a link to the spring you bought or are they all a common size? thanks in advance and keep up the good work.

The stock S22 spring is 750-lbs. I installed a 550-lb spring (see link in the Description on that video for where to buy it) which I think helped "a little", but don't expect miracles :-)

Saw this on telegram and was just about to order some bolts for my yet to come s22! Very timely tutorial. Just wondering, is it ok to use Allen keys as transfer punch? For S18 I always just use the Allen key on the other side to twist the bolt out, would that damage the bolt?

Why Nylon and not Delrin or HDPE? My concern is that if the wear surface of the slider sleeve inserts is too hard that the aluminum battery casing channel will spald, which then might require a channel liner to extend service. So, too soft may be best and these can just be considered yearly maintenance. It just might be easier for Kingsong to redesign the battery case to house the new FastAce shock, and then offer a discount to everyone who wants to upgrade. Sunk Cost fallacies can kill market share so I'm glad to see the resolve of early adopters as well as KingSong, which means that either way there will be a loyal following for years to come.

What makes you think the geometry will lead to a stiffer ride? I'm going to be getting an airshock and cnc sliders and hopefully that'll transform the wheel.

I have yet to ride an S22 that feels as soft as my upgraded Master. But I'll soon try a S22 with the CNC sliders and then I'll know. Generally, airshock's provide a stiffer ride than coil so you might not want to do that, unless you want a firmer ride.

@@ElectricUnicycles hearing From a couple different people as well as my own experience trying two s22s with cnc sliders the ride was just too bouncy. That may be because the damper on the stock shock sucks i don't know. I guess we'll see with the airshock, I enjoyed the ride on the T4 and the V11 which both have airshocks and a slider system with very little friction. I don't see why the S22 wouldn't beat them both with the cnc sliders plus a nice airshock. I hope the cnc's hold up too. Apparently tpu 3d sliders including tpu wheels last pretty well so that could be worth trying.

The shock pivot bolt information you give is wrong. The width of the black plastic spacers + the shock need to be shorter than the aluminum tube that goes through the shock. Just sand one of those plastic spacers to have a small play and you are done. The aluminum tube needs to spin inside the shock. If it is toi right, you might have to sand down the bushing in the shock

@@ElectricUnicycles no, this is not how such a suspension system is designed. With your method, over time, you will develop play and ovalise the holes in the suspension arm. The bushing in the shock is some sort of delrin made to slide on the aluminum tube.

for me, wheels bring out that need to modify, tune, and upgrade. For some, its that they GET to do some of these things, adds a level of ownership and personality that is hard to come by otherwise. Guys have been doing these things with cars and trucks for generations :) But i do see your point, if all you want is a wheel you can just jump on and have it be perfect.

@@thalakos627 I understand what your saying. Being able to modify and upgrade stuff on your own definitely adds a new layer of ownership if your into that stuff. My gripe with the S22 is that it seems like all these upgrades and modifications that people are doing are NEEDED if you want the wheel to be any good. Pretty much every time the S22 is mentioned in a video or online forum I see somebody complaining about how bad the stock configuration is, and how modifications like these are highly recommended. If I’m spending $3k+ on a wheel then I feel like it should atleast be halfway decent out of the box, and not require a bunch of maintenance to make it good.

Those bolts need to be squeezing the linkage to prevent play, the aluminum tube needs to spin in the shock bushing. Wrong fix for this problem.

Can you provide real-world facts to back up your statement? If after another 500-miles I see no degradation than this is a long-term solution. If not then you are correct. But I'll go with the facts. I agree the CNC sliders may be better but we don't know how long they will last either, do we 🙂

Cleaning, lots of different oils, removing rubber parts etc. one rain or 60km through muddy autumn forest and it doesn’t work again. That screeching sound was making me insane as well. You are lucky leaving with no helllots of wet mud around so it takes more time for your wheel to get dirty again 😅 After installing cnc sliders I forgot about the maintenance. No sounds, softer than v11 (I’m unable to ride with fast rebound cuz it’s a trampoline and I don’t feel the road at all). 2000km on the clock of muddy wet Ukrainian fall. No issues whatsoever stock 750lbs spring, 65kg rider btw

With that open channel design that KingSong used I'm surprised that the bearings still don't get clogged with dirt eventually. Did you ever try NO oils (completely dry)? Did it still get clogged up? You're still barely getting any suspension movement from what I am seeing. The slide design might be okay but it looks to me like the material being used is a bad material for the job. Overall I suspect that Kingsong really cheap'd out on the design of this wheel, what a shame. I feel bad for the people who bought it. And I say that as someone who has and mostly enjoys a KS18XL (only negative on the 18XL is the handle/spin kill switch).

I keep wondering if the white Nylon (Polypropylene?) type of material might be a much better choice for that. Of course it would be sacrificial material but it would at least be a suitable component as that stuff is inherently slick-ish and very durable.

@@kmg501 I have no idea, but it's very hard and feels generic (no inherent smooth properties). I think the ideal material would be UHMW. Getting it milled to the precise shape would be the challenge.

At least that means there is a vector for a easy(?) fix if someone would start producing a replacement part made out of a suitable material. I looked up UHMW, it appears to have very similar to Polypropylene properties. In that case I imagine the deciding factor is cost. I sure wish we could see a side by side test here.

Those squeaky though 😬 what lube would they put on the cnc sliders? I know for bike they put dry lube for warm weather and some other one for winter season, and removing all that lube from the s22 isnt nearly as easy as just removing it from the bike chain

"Dave" tried the dry lube but it immediately attracted dirt from trail riding. The real problem is KingSong's decision to use an open channel design that allows dirt easy entry.
