Nice choices! If you ever make a part 3, please, check out Yu Yu Hakusho Makyō Tōitsusen. It's a fighting game with extra game modes, like 2vs2, 1vs 3 and 4 every men for himself. I played alot of it in japanese, memorizing the options. Latter a brasllian company (TecToy) released a version in portuguese.

Yeah, exactly. Here in Europe SNES wasn't really a thing, at least in some countries, so I'm subscribed here mostly to learn about all the SNES stuff I missed out on. Sega Master System and Mega Drive had much fewer Japanese exclusives, so it's really cool to learn new things about those too.

Awesome! Herzog Zwei is my personal pick as the #1 Genesis game, hands down. It's as fun today as it was in 1990. It was this hidden gem we discovered through my friends uncle who simply bought everything for his kids. Nobody knew about this but us, and we battled each other constantly. It was one of those rare games that when you won, you genuinely felt you had not only outplayed, but outsmarted your opponent. 10/10 in my book.

Ok I am 32 years old and when I was a kid 8-9 years old I played this game where you play essentially as a mech that can combine with this motorcycle attachment on screen. I jave been trying to find this games title for the past 10 years or so with NO results. I was so young and I played it on Sega Channel I didn't bother remembering the games title cause I was deep into Comix Zone and Road Rash. The game catalog rotated as did the game and soon there after Sega Channel went offline and I was doomed to the wind of CHANCE that this channel mentioned it!!! Ranger X! Same as the game Crystalis for NES as that was the 1st game I ever played 5-6 years old on our family NES and I had forgotten the name of it until it was mentioned on a retro game channel similar to SNES Drunk. You have no idea what this means to me. Like and subbed! Thank you! 😢😓👏👏👏

Thank you for sharing, friend. Nostalgia is such a powerful thing and sometimes it’s just so important to get the required info to find and relive a past experience once again. It was the same for me with The Pagemaster for Game Boy. :) For years I recall a game where you play as a boy with glasses traversing a magical world. It wasn’t until I saw the movie on TV (I had no idea the game was based on a movie) and realized it was suspiciously similar to the game of my memory that I could finally revisit it.

Target Earth was probably the first fully sci-fi game I really loved back in the day (especially since I've been a high fantasy fan since I learned to read). I remember a school buddy of mine owned it and I couldn't borrow it enough in trying to complete it. I still play it once in a while to this day, but I realized that much of my love of the game stems from the anime-style art and characters it had. Turns out I have a huge weakness for that stuff, especially since I discovered anime five years after Target Earth came out. :) I actually had lots of fun with General Chaos, though my friends weren't as big on it as I was at the time. I am more of a Tactical RPG kind of guy, but General Chaos's distinct brand of humor and unique gameplay (at the time) gave me something new to play for a summer. I owned Chiki Chiki Boys, strangely enough, but I never got around to actually finishing it since I wasn't all that impressed by it. Road Rash... ah, man. How many hours did I spend playing Road Rash 2 and 3 with one of my best friends... I think we actually managed to put in more time in the second game even though the third one is much better in many ways, to be honest. Road Rash actually led me to Skitchin', which isn't as good, but still pretty entertaining if you have a friend, two controllers, and some time to kill. :)

Ahhhh! SNES Drunk! Where's Shadowrun? Yes, it was made for both systems and though the story in the SNES port was more original (and kinda odd), the Genesis version's gameplay was SO much closer to the original pen and paper RPG. They are basically 2 completely different games, but both worth playing through. I would argue (even as someone who had SNES while my friends had Genesis(es?)) that the Genesis version had so much more replay. I still play it in emu on my Pi 2 when I have little else to get my hands on. I know that while dealing with the topic of retro gaming you cover could have you doing videos for the rest of time, but there are few games where a game of the same origin for both systems couldn't be so quite as far apart from each other in presentation and design.

I love this video, and the comments. It's so good that SNES owners are starting to recognise that the Megadrive was an amazing machine, which could better the SNES in many (but not all) departments. Having owned the Megadrive and played on my friend's SNES, I was just glad I got to experience both consoles at the time. It's sad that everyone argued (and still argues) over which machine was best, instead of just experiencing the best games on both. Whichever console you owned back in the day, you were lucky. For me there's no real winner or loser here, they were just both incredible and capable machines.

I was a big fan of the Strike series: Desert, Jungle, and Urban Strike games. Each one added something new and the password system gave you a chance to get past a level that maybe knocked you down a bit. It was also one of the few games that genuinely benefited from a turbo type controller as the increase in fire rate was almost necessary to survive the later levels where enemies had monstrous hit points and fuel was scarce. Once you got the hang of how to move you'd find yourself able to strafe enemies and execute nimble turns like a real chopper pilot. Jungle strike was awesome because it introduced an extremely tricky night level where the area would only light up with explosions. Also the F-117 Stealth Fighter level was just plain fun.

Great picks, as usual. I would caution people about Herzog Zwei because I don't think it's for everyone. I heard it mentioned several times as one of the greatest games on the system, traded for a pricey CIB copy for myself... and I hate it. If you're interested, emulate it first to see if it's for you. I found the game pace to be a boring, slow slog and I didn't like that I basically had to memorize the different troop/weapon types you can produce and what they can/can't do. The same with troop direction commands. The "pick up and play" aspect that I want with a game just isn't there. You better want to immerse yourself into learning this thing. And you'll need a manual. Just a cautionary tale there.
@pixelatedicon6579
@pixelatedicon6579 6 жыл бұрын
J3R3MYcant cant remember if you need the manual or not but suspect you probably do as it's fairly complex. Its awesome in two player mode particularly. If you win its a euphoric well earned victory but if you lose its a downer. Its a real complex fair game of tactics and skill. There's no argument if you lose.

"I didn't like that I basically had to memorize the different troop/weapon types you can produce and what they can/can't do. The same with troop direction commands" - dude that's the same in literally EVERY RTS game ever made, wtf? No offense, but it's kind of on YOU that you didn't know this was an RTS game, and cautioning people against this excellent ground breaking game (just because RTS isn't a style of game you like) is way off base (especially when many if not MOST gamers like the genre).

If I were to recommend a Genesis exclusive, it'd be DecapAttack. Yeah some of the stage graphics might be ugly as sin (why is some of the flooring translucent?) but the rest of the game looks good enough and killing off ghouls with the face inside of your body or by chucking the skull power-up you find from time to time is as funny as it is fun. If that wasn't enough, it also has one of the best Genesis soundtracks I've ever heard. The game itself has become a Halloween tradition along with Splatterhouse 2. Also, I know the SNES got it's sequel/spin-off (depending on who you ask) but the original Rocket Knight Adventures is a must play for all fans of platformer games.

Also Todd's Adventures in Slime World. That game was freaking revolutionary in its time, with multiple game modes that each reutilize and recontextualize the game assets for a completely different experience, with different emphasis, pacing and even mechanics. It's almost like the game was made for procedural generation, in a time before it was available. Even today, I can't say there's a game that completely supercedes the "alienness" of TAiSW's caverns.

Aw man Snesdrunk you forgot about Dynamite Headdy! I really great platformer also made by Treasure. You gotta check it out. The Japanese version had a more balanced difficulty though so try that one instead I guess...great video as usual though man

Still playing Herzog Zwei sometimes. Still no RTS quite like it. Starflight was another game in a league of its own back then.

Great picks!! I'm a MegaDrive owner and still I've overlooked games like Herzog Zwei and Red Zone few times too many, but now that you described how they play I actually wanna try them out, too! Also funny how you compared MW4 style to Shantae seeing how it's essentially a spiritual successor to the Monster World series in general)) It's just a little ironic that Shantae is now relatively more well known than the series that inspired it..:D

I think it's probably the nostalgia talking, but I was fond of "Rocket Knight Adventures," if for no other reason than it was a platformer with a possum as the main character-who wore knight armor and had a rocket pack. A unique concept on a tried-and-true genre.

As a SNES kid, I only played Genesis when I'd visit a friend or cousin. However, I did discover some games I wish was on SNES that I enjoyed a lot. Spider Man. This was a platformer that had one key mechanic that made it stand above the rest. It had a Pokémon Snap like photo taking element. Spider-Man would have to take photos of objects that would get more money depending on size and positioning. It's been a long time since I've played it, but plan on doing so again real soon. Another is the Beavis and Butthead title. While SNES had one too, the SNES version was a different game all out. It was mindless. The Genesis version was more adventure based, closer to Maniac Mansion or Monkey Island style. You were Beavis and Butthead trying to figure out how to see GWAR. It was a much better game and with checking out if you ever liked the show. The Genesis was more open with "mature" content, so I remember it being more true to form and less censored than the SNES version.

Should've mentioned Yu Yu Hakusho. It's the best fighting game on the Genesis and one of the best console-only 16-bit fighting games I've played. Also Pulseman was a great game. It was like a cross between Sonic and Mega Man and it was made by the same company that did Pokemon. Rent-A-Hero was great too. There are so many great Genesis games and that's if you don't add the Sega CD too. Even the 32X had Kolibri, Virtua Fighter, Virtua Racing Deluxe, Wrestlemania Arcade, Mortal Kombat II, and Knuckle's Chaotix.

You gotta try out some of the good Sega only (and sometimes Sega developed) arcade ports. Gain Ground is one of my personal favorites, and they even added levels that weren't in the arcade version. I also really like Vapor Trail (or Kuuga), a great shootemup from Data East with an awesome soundtrack. Granada is a port of a Sharp X68000 game from Wolf Team, and it's a lot of fun; an overhead shooter in the same family as something like Capcom's Commando. There's also weird original games like The Ooze and Greendog, which may have some rough edges but there's nothing else like them. You should also check out the fan translation for Rent A Hero, a unique RPG.
