Are you wondering what makes the difference between your story being in the top 0.1% of best-selling books and screenplays?
John Truby joins us to talk about the anatomy of genres and how to use genre-specific beats from multiple genres to create iconic stories that transcend genre. John Truby is a story coach, a master of genre, and a believer that any story could be made into something powerful and memorable. He has studied best-selling books and screenplays, looking for the common thread that ran through them all.
Truby studied the different genres and the beats that each of them contained, looking for common elements that could be used to create stories that transcended genre. Truby believes that the key to creating powerful stories was to use beats from multiple genres. It was the combination of different genres that made stories rich and complex.
He writes in The "Anatomy of Genres" that by using the appropriate genres and their individual beats combined with the right structure, any story could be crafted into an iconic tale. Truby provides the tools to help aspiring storytellers find their own unique path to success. He teaches how to identify the various genres, the beats they contained and how to weave them together in a way that made the story exciting, memorable, and unpredictable. His methods had helped many of his students become some of the top 0.1% of best-selling books and screenplays.

This was an insightful interview. Looks like A of G is going to be amazing on so many levels. I enjoyed you asking about the spiritual and philosophical aspects that theme conveys, and briefly touching on how these aspects of story subliminally transact. Looking forward to getting my copy soon.

Why is every word at the end of most sentences cut out? It’s really frustrating.

You have to look over his book to better understand the characteristics of genres. It’s a fascinating insight into storytelling.

I have read a little here and there, as I like to do, and I find this book thought-provoking. For example, he sees the New Testament John, Mark, etc as a horror story! I am not a writer...but it has always been a pipe dream of mine. I was always discouraged from writing by the lack of relevant how-to courses in college. I have a background in philosophy and his philosophical to genre connections make a lot of sense. You can tell a lot about people by the genres they follow. This concept refers to novels and screenplays but I wonder if it doesn't have some relevance in non-fiction. After all, some histories are the horror tale genre and some true crime stories read like good fiction.

Horrible audio all the way around. Breaks in speaking. Music just interferes with speaking, especially for those of us that have problems pulling speaking from background sounds. It is, however, full of fantastic information. Thanks! And I'm picking up the books.

I really like many of these videos but I always laugh when they say "99% of authors do this". Did they really make a survey of all the authors or even a case study😂
