I'm old enough to remember when this show was still new enough that celebrity guests (especially Americans!) had no idea about this show and thought it was just another celebrity gameshow. As much as anything, the original purpose of this show was to mindfreak it's guests. I still remember the plaintive cries of "Iranu!" "Uvavu!" and "Ulrika-ka-ka-ka!"

In 1991 Vic Reeves released an album called 'I will cure you' that not only spawned a number 1 single in the form a cover of the Tommy Roe song ''Dizzy' but also cryptically told of the location of three pairs of boots he had buried at three different sites in the UK. Thirty years on, only one pair have been found.

You have absolutely no doubts have you? This is typical Anglosaxon arrogance. I know very well Italian and British comedy...your assumption is biased and based on ignorance. At least give the rest of the world a chance - if you learn Italian you should check programs like Alto Gradimento (in the 70's incredibly surreal and anarchic radio program) and L'altra Domenica (in the 80's basically the improved TV version of that cult radio program). I feel sorry for those who have no doubts - keep your illusion if you prefer but that doesn't make you the less ignorant (sorry)

It's a cool story actually, Vic started doing a one man live comedy cabaret act in bars in London where Bob became a fan, then over time became part of the actual act himself and Vic and Bob was born, Matt Lucas also became a huge fanboy of this live show and went on to be George Dawes in the clip, literally working for his idols, he keeps the scores.

Shooting stars was one of the most random shows to ever be on British Television. It was hosted by Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer - both known for their utterly surreal humour who were joined each week by Ulrika Johnson (a former weather presenter) and a deadpan comedian (Mark Lamar in early episodes and Jack Dee in later ones.) The scores were kept by either "George Dawes" an adult baby on the drums or "Marjorie Dawes" a middle aged woman - both played by the comedian Matt Lucas, who later went on to create the hit comedy show "Little Britain" with his comedy partner David Walliams. In later episodes a new character called Angelos Epithemou an odd greasy haired burger van owner (though later he was revealed to be on benefits) appeared... he was played by the comedy actor Dan Renton Skinner... he first featured as a regular team-mate on Ulrika's team and later as the score keeper - replacing Matt Lucas... The show was basically an excuse for Reeves and Mortimer to torture celebrities each week with their completely surreal and (most of the time) incomprehensible comedy.

George Dawes was a persona of Matt Lucas, who was half of "Little Britain." "Shooting Stars" was a play on words, as Vic and Bob used to metaphorically shoot the stars who appeared on the show as guests. Vic Reeves (real name Jim Moir) was a Mechanical Engineer, who became a surrealist comedian. Bob Mortimer had trained as a Solicitor (Lawyer to Americans), saw Vic and immediately finagled his way into the act. Thus history was created.

Funny you should mention trying a challenge, cos Matt Lucas´"Baked Potato" song went viral during the pandemic. He revived it, with revised lyrics with COVID tips, singing it nearly every day with a different celebrity singer each time. Then loads of people starting posting their own versions. You´ll find loads of them online. Also, Vic and Bob have claimed that their intention with Shooting Stars was to, with all the episodes together, make the world´s longest ever sketch. Vic started out his comedy as a form of Dadaism. If you look that up, it might shed some light. But honestly, it´s best to not analyse it and just have a laugh. I would recommend "It´s a Kind of Magic - Reeves and Mortimer".

George Daws was the scorekeeper of the show. He was given 4 segments to do anything and not even vic or bob would know what was going to happen. That’s why you can see them laughing away in the background and Matt Lucas struggling to hold it together

Vic and Bob are comedy legends over here. Absurdist humour at it's best. Also take a look at The Fast Show - genius. One of the comics from each show are great friends and now do Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing. Possibly some of the most honest, engaging, humorous and engaging TV on in the UK at the moment.

Dude, I figured out the third cardboard didgeridoo performance. You probably could do most of that. But when he did the guitar solo at the end of smoke on the water. I'm sure they've used a synthesizer, that sounds like a cardboard didgeridoo would. But it still takes skills. The idea alone is epic!!

Surrealism was at its best with these two, in many of the shows that they came our with . . . Who thought of doing such weird shit this way, you asked? - Well, you only have to look at them in these shows to know who thought of it, as they really do get into it together . . . George Dawes (Matt Lucas) was in the dark humour show Little Britain after this. But you may well be remembering him from being in the MasterChef video you did recently lads . . . ???

For 30 years us Brits have had Reeves & Mortimer giving us regular doses of WTFxWTF. To my knowledge, nobody has quite figured out what they're doing, or why it's funny. But it's damn funny. Jack Dee is one of Britain's best standups, his grumpy persona is his trademark.

Loved this ❤ Congrats for embracing this, chaps xxx Shooting Stars was an 1990s show by Vic and Bob essentially a piss take of panel shows 😂 all sorts of guests and 'George Dawes' the actor Matt Lucas, was always a highlight "He's a baaaabaaaayyyy!" The early eps had George playing a drum roll and shouting out random things which used to make me cry laughing 😂 the whole show is silly, irreverent and completely bonkers which is why it was so loved 😍 it could get a bit embarrassing when overseas guests didn't realise the whole thing was comedy and took it at face value, but it was a telly highlight on BBC back on the day 🤩❤✌🏻

Lads, that was one of the most awesome reactions i have ever seen! Your bemused faces all through that was a joy to watch :D You should really try watching an entire episode, preferably an older one with 50's throwback Mark Lammarr as A team captain, he is tormented by vic and Bob mercilessly. Also check out the earlier incarnation 'Vic Reeves big Night Out' for the ultimate surreal experience, or The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer. Vic and Bob are national treasures, especially to us 90's teenagers who loved the fact it all really confused our parents at the time.

The way Vic and Bob constantly got comedians to break character was genius. This show was truly ahead of it's time and it's anarchic, surrealist comedy blew us away in every episode. You need to check out early episodes or do a review on a complete episode to get the gist of the the show and the relentless torment of the captains.
