Growing up, ice kachang is our favourite! yes its shaved ice drizzled with multiple syrup sauces and a little bit of evaporated milk. the brown syrup is called gula melaka that is essentially a type of palm sugar while the other syrups are unknown to me haha but they are so yummy! That is an Attap Seed. Usually there is no more than 2 in an Ice Kachang, and as kids, we would race to find the first attap seed (its almost like finding treasure in every ice kachang bowl haha). The red beans at the bottom adds a different texture to this dessert. Sometimes an assortment of jelly are added at the bottom as well. With Singapore's weather, its relaxing finishing up a meal with a cold bowl of goodness! I once saw another youtuber who thought Ice Kachang was absolutely horrible which was interesting because growing up its our absolute favourite! so happy to see you guys loving Singapore! :)
@DelightfulTravellers6 жыл бұрын
That was our first time having it as well. It's seems weird at first and that's probably because all we can compare it to is ice cream. But beans in the bottom? haha.. that would take some time to grow on us. Thx for watching Jiawen! - Trevor

Nasi goreng literally means fried rice in malay. There are many verssion and from different race. The one you ordered is an indian version. Roti prata is also an indian food. The unique thing is both indian dishes is only available in Singapore and Malaysia, not India because they are created by overseas indian here in southeast asia. Ice Kacang means ice with nuts or beans. Ice as in English and kacang is nuts or beans in malay.. It's shaved ice with red beans. Traditionally rose syrup which makes it looks pinkish coloured, gula malacca or palm sugar for the brown unknown green syrup and evapourated milk is pour over the ice with red beans and some jelly at the botton.

The Ice Kacang (Car-Charr-ngg) is a dessert that is made of shaved ice and various ingredients, often with red beans and corn, and other colored jellies. The ice is showered with usually 3 syrups, and some stalls even put condense milk as a 'last touch'. The dessert is pretty unique, and originated from the 'ice ball'. During the 1960s to 80s (Dad days), I heard the ice was shaved and shaped into a ball the size of probably a tennis ball, and drenched with different syrups without ingredients. It was considered a luxury to afford ice balls as children back then, and kids will do their best to consume it before it melts and trickles through their fingers. Today, though not within our hands, I usually make an effort to 'eat through the ice' from one end to the other, so my dessert kind of has a hole in the middle of it to the other side before it melts and caves in. Just a personal preference... I have seen a few people mix the entire thing the moment they sit down before eating it too, but I just prefer to make a hole and thereafter cave the whole thing in. Thanks!

1:20 You got it right. It's actually steamed radish cake, which you can also find in its original form on a dim sum menu. The radish cake is cut up and fried together with egg and scallion to make fried "carrot" cake.

Ice Kacang is basically shaved ice dose with colored sugar syrup... Red, Green and Yellow is the most common... the dark brown syrup is melted palm sugar... that 'White' semi transparent thingy is known locally as 'attap chee'... aka, Nypa fruticans, the fruits from a type of palm tree.... the ingredients at the bottom is usually Sweeted Red Beans (NOT Black, LOL)... sweet corn... jello... and of course the more $$$$ version of Ice Kacang could be topped with Strawberries, Mango, Durian and even chocolate sauce... Strongly recommend both of you to try Bak Kut Teh (Pork Rib Soup).. Sup Tulang... and of course, Chili, Black Pepper, Salted Egg Crab..

that little clear translucent thing in the ice kacang where you said “what’s that” is called Attap Chee (Nipa Palm Seed). It is the most amazing thing ever - an immature seed with jellylike sensation on the tongue but firm once you bite in. I love to buy an entire box of this attap chee from the supermarket and just chew it plain for fun. It is relatively expensive so you get only one or two per bowl of ice kacang.

Carrot Cake: You had the White version. Which is more Savory. You can try the Black version which fried with Sweet Sauce. If you have a sweet tooth. Sometimes the stall may also sell Oyster Omelet. Chicken Rice: Chili or some stalls have Grated Ginger which goes well with the Chicken. Nasi Goreng: Nasi means Rice and Goreng means Fried. It could be spicy or sweet. Depending on how the stall does it. Roti Prata: It is more Indian. You can have it plain, with Egg, with Raw Onion folded into it. There are many variations. You can also try Mutabak which has different types of meats folded into it. Ice Kacang: It is Shaved ice with different sweet syrup drizzled over it. That is an Attap Seed. It is somewhat similar to the Ice cones from Hawaii. You can also try Chendol. Which is Shaved Ice with coconut milk and brown sugar mix. If you find the hawker center is too crowded, you can leave a packet of Tissue on the table or seat and it would represent the seat is taken. This is also a reminder if you find a table with packets of tissue, umbrellas, keys (yes some people do leave their keys) or Company ID Cards, it means the seat has been taken.

The S'pore style is to put a packet of tissue paper (per person) on a seat and your seat is 'reserved' whilst you queue. But do note it works in hawker centers and some food courts, but not ALL of them. The black varient is sweet. 2)In Southeast Asia we eat rice served on plates like Chicken Rice a fork and spoon NOT Chopsticks. U use the spoon to scope up the rice and the fork to push the food onto the food. Chopsticks are used for noodles or Chinese food 3)Nasi Goreng is Indonesian but the one U tried is the local Indian varient 4)Roti Prata is Singaporean Indian food not Indonesian and it doesn't exist in India 5)Red Beans is common in Asian desserts If U are still in SG, try Chilli Crab, its is along with Chicken Rice considered the national dish Other food to try, Katong Laksa, Ya Kun Kaya Toast, Satay, BBQ StingRay, Ork Luak(a type of oyster omelette), Bak Kut Teh(prok rib soup), etc. U can refer to this link for other stuff to try, sethlui.com/best-local-famous-foods-to-eat-singapore/

Maxwell market is pricey by Singaporean standards. There are many other places that are better and cheaper, but they are all over the City State. So, Maxwell is often the right choice to go to as everything is in the same place. For example, roti prata. Jalan Kayu prata is unchallenged, but which tourist/traveller would go all the way there? My tip for future travellers: Get a local as a guide. 😊

It is mean to be eaten in spades with a spoon, and not a fork or chopsticks. In general, if rice does not come to you in a bowl, it is not meant to be eaten with chopsticks. FYI, You are going to find people offended by Chinese music or themes associated to SG. SG may be a multi-cultural country. When it comes to its marketing or depiction, sticking to modern themes might be a smart bet. Otherwise, featuring all 3 of its main cultures would be safe. It's strange how we have been drilled at school or all our lives of how multi-cultured we are. But north Americans somehow see us as everything Chinese.

The Nasi goreng (in the malay language, nasi=rice, goreng =fried) you have is the "red" type which are usually cooked by indians in these region, so it's more of a localized Indian style fried rice(you wun find this in India though). Besides having it with just the chilli you could also should have had it with a little soy sauce. That's how i have mine. You could also tried the roasted version as well the next time. The nasi goreng you got was actually from indian Muslim stall. Nasi goreng actually comes in many variations. The malay, chinese and indian has their own take on it. Maybe when you have the chance again do try the different takes of nasi goreng then tell us which you prefer the most. For the desserts good choice on trying out our ice kachang. Do try the different type of dessert from the same stall. To wrap it up, great video and im glad or should i say we singaporeans are glad you enjoyed your stay and tried the food that we have. Your next visit here, do go to Golden Mile Food Centre. Less “touristy” and better “local-approved” food.

the chicken rice should add in the soya sauce and the chili sauce. the main catch is the chili sauce. tian tian is not the best chicken rice in Singapore. there are a lot of better chicken rice than tian tian.

@@DelightfulTravellers Chicken rice stalls are all over the island, all the way deep into the HDB heartlands. Tian Tian is popular because it is smack right in Chinatown and convenient esp for tourists. I would rate it 8/10 and it the most representative and common variation of Chicken Rice available. The other in the city is Chin Chin restaurant in Purvis St next to the Raffles Hotel. It is the most traditional and original and imho the best although quality has dropped much as the skills had been passed to younger generations who operate it. If you do go there, try the Hainanese Pork Chop. This is the real original stuff served by the Hainanese to the British masters and is very rare now in Singapore. Other local favourites are in Balestier, Yishun, Redhill etc but these are more for locals and not easily located for tourists. The other popular variation of this dish is in Boon Tong Kee. The style is quite different and what is called Pak Cham Kai literally translated White Chop Chicken. Strictly speaking its not a hainanese style, more like the Hong Kong version but the chicken is super smooth, juicy, the skin is like gelatinous, greater texture but not so flavourful with less spice. This is worth a try. Wee Nam Kee is also one of the best and version is similar to Tian Tian but better a 9/10 for me www.thebestsingapore.com/eat-and-drink/the-best-5-hainanese-chicken-rice. There is no secret, just google the dish and you see all the stalls and opinions. Condiments like dark soy sauce, grated/chopped ginger and chilli sauce are a must and can make a world of a difference to some Singaporeans for this dish. Whichever you choose, enjoy! As the locals say Shiok!

They gave u some chicken breast meat with your chicken rice which is not an ideal part of the chicken for chicken rice. That's why it was tasteless. Locals always refuse the breast meat.

Better? Does Malaysia and Indonesia have Chinese dishes besides Malay and Indonesian like in Singapore? Especially if they are not halal like roast pork, roast chicken?
