Hey just broke mine about a week ago and I had no idea that I could prop up my arm on a pillow like that, I’ve been sleeping sitting upright with my sling very tight to maximize the healing process. On the downside I barely got any sleep and would wake up every few hours. Mentally it’s taken a toll on me too because I was told that I wouldn’t be able to do any sports or lifting for at least 3 months. Seeing these comments have definitely given me comfort. I think something that’s really important to be on top of while healing is if ur body is slouched. My mom made sure to remind me to always stand straight with good posture. The first couple days I would lean right toward my broken bone because it was less painful but my mom told me that my bone could heal at a weird angle so make sure u stay on top of that. I plan on going back into boxing and weightlifting once I’ve fully recovered, I’ll update u guys in 3 or so months.

I broke my collarbone commuting on my bike two weeks ago, and I watched this video a few days after it happened. I have to say that what I loved most about it was hearing your positive energy. It was so helpful hearing someone discuss their recovery in a humorous way, it gave me a light at the end of the tunnel (which was difficult to see previously with all the pain). So thank you for making this!

Is your collarbone healed now
@DreamingWithEyesWide3 жыл бұрын
@@ns_izaac1572 it didn't heal by itself, there was still a fairly big gap of 14mm between the bone parts that wouldn't come close together, so I just had surgery a week ago to get a plate added to it 4 months after it broke. Wish I'd gotten the surgery in the first place, but it wasn't offered to me then because the doctor said it will heal by itself!
@lornestein72482 жыл бұрын
@@DreamingWithEyesWide I just broke mine today. How long did you wait and see before understanding surgery was required?
@DreamingWithEyesWide2 жыл бұрын
@@lornestein7248 it took about 3/4 weeks to realise that the bone parts weren't moving any closer together (it healed 3mm in those first few weeks and then it stopped healing, even though it still had 14mm of a gap left). The surgery and the recovery from it was way smoother than trying to let it heal by itself because I was in way less pain after the surgery than after I fell! Anyway, now it's been about 9 months since the surgery and it's almost all perfect now, I can do everything again, including endurance cycling, so in my case I'm delighted I had the surgery so I could move on with my life!

Great video Wayne! What worked best for me after breaking my collarbone was something called an “X-brace” and it basically looks like you’re wearing a backpack without the pack in the back. I found the sling was uncomfortable and my arm/elbow was super stuff since you can’t use the arm that’s in the sling. When it was time to take the sling off for whatever reason it would be so painful to straighten my arm. The X-brace would keep my collarbone stable but allow me to still use both arms. This was helpful for things like typing, using a computer and mouse. Obviously you can’t lift anything because of your broken collarbone but you can still do light task and keep both arms mobile.
@antiherobc4 жыл бұрын
Thanks buddy. I have never heard of the x brace. Next time I break it i'll have to check that out.

No consistent pain or anything while it was broken. (yes I had some meds) ....Sure it hurt in spasms to test the joint at first....drying off after a shower was challenging.......and getting socks on was a bitch...but overall....it was not a big deal if you could give yourself the time to heal. My bone was loose and broken for at least 2 weeks....but then started to heal rather quickly. My shoulder now is about 1/2" closer inward and forward..but otherwise, no real problem. I wanted to ask you whether your clavicle was a displaced fracture or did the ends of the break pretty much line up. Mine is displaced and my doc is saying that he wants to see if these two ends can somehow find each other and start knitting together. I have my doubts 😕 It's been 2 weeks now and my pain level is way down and my range of motion is pretty good considering. I'm hoping that I follow your pattern and it starts healing quickly from here on out.
@metricdeep88562 жыл бұрын
@@rdmanzo6691 Mine was broken in 3 pieces. They were not lined up in the strict sense but the zig zag pattern I saw on the X-ray somehow became one again. The two ends were far apart but the broken piece in the middle kind of ran in a line to the both broken ends. I remember it taking about two weeks before it felt like it actually started to reconnect. There is definitely a bump where it healed and was actually fairly pointy but has rounded since. It’s certainly not straight but it is healed. I wonder if the broken piece in the middle became part of the healed joint or if it dissolved away due to not having a blood supply or something. I also remember the pain not being that bad either. If in doubt go see the doc and get an X-ray. I would say it sounds pretty similar to my experience. Cheers and good luck.
@rdmanzo66912 жыл бұрын
@@metricdeep8856 Thank you for your response, it's much appreciated. I feel better now with the direction my doc is taking me, using a more conservative, non-surgical approach. Even though I'm "old" in his eyes (56 now) I'm still pushing as though I'm 30. I had my 2 week follow up x-ray today and the bones are exactly at the same spot as the day I broke them. I just want to be able to heal up and have the same, or nearly the same, strength and flexibility I had before. It's hard to believe that the gap between the 2 ends are going to be bridged. Thanks again for your feedback.

i havent watched all yet but im adhd and must type this out. i slept on my stomach with a very thin pillow for my head but that was just me, i had a friend who slept in a lazyboy for 2 weeks, 3:12 i slept like that while recovering from a nose job that fixed a deviated septum (i needed to keep my head elevated while i sleep)

I broke mine yesterday it barely hurt, but it feels weird. I tripped on the sidewalk and then rolled my ankle. then when I was trying to get my balance back I landed on my shoulder and if you take a toothpick and push on both ends it will not be able to stand the pressure and will snap and that's how it happened

Sir, I am speaking from Bangladesh. Sir, my collarbone was broken 3 months ago. When I went to the doctor, the doctor put me on a support belt and told me to go after 30 days. I will report it after I go.

Sleep deprivation the first 7-10 days seems to be the most common problem after breaking one’s collarbone, I too had extreme discomfort and exhaustion the next day so I ended up with a couple of those styrofoam wedges available at medical supply/rental companies which helped in allowing a more seated position of sleep. I followed that up with many pillows around me to stave off the flailing around while trying to sleep you described,that helped immensely. I tried a recliner type chair my 1st and 2nd nights but rocking the unit back into a laying position caused to much pain on my side as I also fractured 3 ribs! It’s been 18 days since being blindsided by a snowboarder and I have been twice to the ortho and things have progressively gotten much better after the first 2 weeks.. chin up and lookin forward to next ski season!

Everyone’s sharing what happened to them so why don’t I? I was at my church group I go to (I’m 15) and we were playing a game where you sit in chairs in a circle and hit a ball around try to prevent the person in the middle from grabbing it, otherwise the person who hit the ball last goes in the middle, so it’s pretty harmless. HOWEVER, if you are the last one to touch the ball and it goes outside of the circle, you and the guy in the middle chase after it, and whoever gets the ball can sit, and the other guy takes the middle. This happened to me, so aI rushed for the ball, and I tripped onto my side, and the other guy landed on my side and crushed my elbow into the ground, and I felt a tense “pop” near my neck and elbow. Next thing I know paramedics are there, then they put me in a temporary splint, my dad comes and we go to the ER, where they then took 3-4 hours to give me a splint and pain meds. I can barely walk without getting paranoid that my collarbone is gonna do something rn, but it is only day 1. Cya internet

Not a doctor, but in my opinion u needed an operation for that kind of fracture. I had my left collarbone broken several times. U’ve been really brave for 11weeks! How’s your mobility now? Peace

Thanks so much for this video. I'll try... I broke my collarbone a month ago. I've always slept on my tummy, facing to the right or left. I've tried, but I can't sleep, while sort of reclining on my bed, unless I take sleeping pills. I've tried to sleep on my tummy, trying to rest my broken side on two or three pillows, and though, it helps, I fear that that will delay my healing process. Any thoughts?

One thing about broken collar bones you're right they're no fun I had that happen to me back in the mid 60s when I was a little boy I was just basically playing around and running around the house and when I got the stairs I went down the stairs head first basically I rolled down a flight of stairs and then when I basically got to my collarbone that was the end of it so it was a pain and I couldn't even move for a few days because of it so sure I feel your pain so basically the other thing is though I could barely walk in the house at all for the first few days I had to crawl on my hands and knees to get to the bathroom and it sure was no fun to begin with so luckily I was able to don't make the best of it but I tell you you do start feeling the effects of it when it wears off and I'll tell you what those effects of the broken collarbone can be felt for years!
