Best Spray Gun for DIY - Critter Siphon Gun - Best paint spray gun for small projects

What's up guys and gals, the Critter siphon gun video is here! If you've seen some of my videos you've probably heard me or seen me use the little Critter siphon gun whether to paint doors, cabinets or trim. I am a big of fan of the Critter syphon gun for many reasons. In this video I walk you through what a siphon gun is and why I like to use it. I also think if you are a DIYer you must have this tool in your shop. This is IMO the best paint sprayer for small projects and an excellent spray gun for a beginner.
The siphon gun is very simple. All you need is a compressor and some mason jars and of course your paint of choice or stain. The Critter siphon gun has a male quick connect tip that you hook onto your compressor's line and you're pretty much good to go, it's that easy. I personally like to set my pressure a little higher than the recommended pressure from Critter, but that's my own preference.
The Critter siphon gun then uses the air pressure to spray the paint onto your surface, no electricity or hassles. Here are some of the benefits I found using the Critter siphon gun:
1. Limited overspray. You will definitely have overspray from using this siphon gun; however, it's very minimal compared to other spray guns, which makes it ideal to work in finished spaces,
2. Clean up is a breeze. Once finished, detach the mason jar from the Critter gun, dip the Critter nozzle into a bucket of water and fire away. You will spray all the paint out and clean the siphon gun in the process. Alternatively, just take the Critter gun to the sink and rinse it.
3. Professional results. I've finished vanities, trim, cabinets and doors with the Critter siphon gun and the results were amazing. No brush marks, no dripping and the surface is smooth and glass like.

I was wondering if i can use this paint with my critter gun?? I bought some red rust-oleum oil based paint to spray paint 2 large metal cabinets. The guy gave me TSL throat seal liquid to clean it after. Did I get everything I need for this project??

As long as the paint isn’t too thick, you should be fine. If it thick, you can water it down per instructions on the paint. Usually I use paint thinner to clean the critter or water for water based paints. Put some paint thinner in a mason jar and spray it for a few seconds. I personally haven’t used TSL before, so not sure about that one. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching 👊🏼

I need to paint a nbf 35" five drawer file cabinet. Right now it's blue but I want to paint it red. I was cleaning my shed and found this spray gun. Should I just use home depot spray cans or should I purchase a compressor and use my jar sprayer? Also to clean it I just run thinner after?

Is this a metal cabinet? In general if you plan to do more painting projects I would invest in a compressor. They can be used for other applications such as finish nailers, blowers to clean tools…etc. and they do have a good resale value. If you don’t plan to do much, then paint cans are ok. With any spray application be sure to use a fan motion and practice on a scrap piece of cardboard or whatever. If you’re using oil based paint, use paint thinner to clean out tool otherwise water is fine. Hope that answered your question. Thanks for watching and good luck 👊🏼

@True Grit Development yes the file cabinet I want to paint is metal. I wonder if a 1 or 2 gallon will be enough for what I need it for? I have a critter Mason jar amazon spray gun that I found in shed. I will probably use it to air up stuff bit thas about it. I might spray paint my kitchen cabinets in tje summer but not sure. So that's why I wanna get a small air compressor cause let's say I use it for the kitchen cabinets then I don't k ow if I will ever use one again🙄 was thinking about hookimg small compressor to a retractable hose too.

Get one, they’re not that expensive and you can always return it if you don’t like it after this project, just make the hose doesn’t get paint on it and if it does, clean it right away after you’re finished. Use paint that will adhere to metal, ask the paint rep at Lowe’s or HD or Sherwin Williams. 1 gal is plenty, the critter doesn’t spray out too much paint. You will need 2 coats. I set my compressor to. 40-45 PSI for the critter, but as always test before spraying your project. You will love this thing. Oh, and make sure you have a needle handy, you will need it to clear out the Critter tip in case paint dries on it as it will block the paint from coming out.

@True Grit Development thank u very much. After I finish do I just clean it with water? also do u recomend a 1 or 2 or 3 gallon portable air compressor. I was looking at the harbor freight mcgraw 3 gallon fir $69

That’ll do. Only goes to 110 PSI, but you won’t need anymore than that unless you do heavy construction work. If you use water based paint, you just need water to clean it. If you use oil based paint, use paint thinner.

I have a 6 gal pancake 165 PSI Dewalt compressor. I’ve had it for 3 yrs now and it’s been good. I got it on sale as a package deal with an 18 gauge mail gun. Thanks for watching and supporting ✊🏼

I am assuming your just thinning the paint with water to use in sprayer?

Depends on paint. Most cabinet grade paint will be thicker, so just a bit of water will do. If you’re using regular paint, no thinning necessary.

@TrueGritDevelopment thank you for the tip. I will be using cabinet paint so I will def want to thin a bit. Also I will be using paint strainers as well, so I can reduce clogging issues with the sprayer

Strainers r a good idea. I use left over window screens mesh, I think I cover that in the video too. Good luck!
