My Squirrel-Be-Gone feeder was literally destroyed by squirrels, starting at the chimney, where they tore open the roof and then immediately emptied my feeder. At Amazon it's $30, a BAD deal since my Perky-Pet Squirrel Be Gone II #339 NEVER defeted the squirrels.

I bought one with the same hinged perch bar where the feeding area closes shut and did help keep the squirrels off without any problem. BUT I heard one day some horrible screeching and found that a small bird managed to get his head stuck between the small metal separators, was just awful. I quietly took some metal wire clippers and carefully snapped each end off. These feeders can break their necks if they get their heads stuck and not discovered in time. I had to share my experience with it. But they work great with squirrels.

I would never use this style of feeder. My experience with that Tit mouse was awful. Once he was freed that feeder went into the trash.

These aren't bad feeders, however I've found that eventually the squirrels realize they have to hang from the roof (as shown in the video) to get the feed.

They up graded it. We had one in the 80s the feeder back then had a counter weight out of the back of the feeder, so I see they changed it! The squirrels were smart enough to sit one on the counterweight, while the other one did sit on the front and eat up all the seat then they would trade places. It was fun to watch but it wasn't squirrel proof. It's nice to see they changed the design. Or maybe it's a different company.

I'm own one of these for 4 years and it does keep the squirrels out, most of the time. Over the 4 years they got in a couple of times by gnawing at the metal hinged perched and expanding the seed shoot. That had to be bent back. They knocked it off the planter hook it was mounted on, which then needed to be fortified. Then they pick out seeds from the little holes at the hinge. Some duck tap on the inside to cover the holes fixed this. Squirrels are relentless and are constantly trying to figure ways to break in. This feeder is made of heavy gauge metal and is the best one I have ever owned. It’s worth the money.

I love this, but the squirrels have figured out in 6 weeks how to LIFT the perch bar. They hang on the house, stand on the lower perch bar, then lift it to get the seed.

Bought a similar to this one. Within the first hour Mr. Squirrel had broken one of the cheap thin plastic windows and went at the seed. I replaced the broken and the second unbroken plastic on the opposite side with some aluminium sheeting. That solved that issue. Them Mr. S figured out how to hang onto the steel post, lean out and hold the spring loaded cover open with a front foot, held onto the feed tray and had at it some more. The next morning while making biscuits for breakfast the Crisco can proved to be the solution. Using a bunched up paper towel I swabbed down the exterior of the feeder and the steel post. Voila, the critter can’t climb the hanging post. If Mr. S jumps down onto the feeder it continues sliding off the feeder. Solved!

I suggest you add a third criteria, can squirrels figure out how to remove the roof to access the seed. We purchased this feeder and mounted it as suggested by the manufacturer. Within a couple of hours, a squirrel spun the weather vane and removed the roof. I had to drill and add removable screws with wingnuts to secure the roof ...

With their feet or teeth the mechanical aptitude of squirrels is amazing. I swear I saw one with Allen wrenches in his cheeks, wingnuts will fail. Others carry hole saws and saber saws.

I had this same thing happen: I was amazed at the squirrel's genius! I created a fix that has worked for about 5 days now: I rigged up a wire hook, attaching it to the weather arrow and under the front of the roof. This tightens up when the squirrel tries to turn the weather vane arrow to open the feeder. I also greased the roof and hanger with some vegetable oil to keep the squirrels from hanging off the top. So far, so good with both fixes!

I got one of these at Wal-Mart today. #339 - It's labeled as "Home Style Perky-Pet Wild Bird Feeder." It says it's "Squirrel Resistant" and not labeled as Squirrel Proof. It looks similar, but at the top, the locking key does not have the bird weather vane.

It's a great feeder and LARGE. I few holes, a cable and a way to bolt the cable to lock down the roof is the best way to prevent the squirrels from popping the roof and sitting in the hopper.

I also have 2 of these feeders. Squirrels are really comical, but also smart as whips. They hang by their tail and rear feet and figured how to not lean on the perch. Also, they have figured out how to get the roof off or even knock off the metal hanger. Every morning I find a new scenario. I have even used a bungee to keep the roof in place and strap ties to keep the feeder from moving on the pole to a branch. I like some of the previous comments and suggestions. I will incorporate some of those useful ideas along with my own creativity. I am one to never give up!!

For the adjustable lever, which one should I use? Top, Middle or the bottom? I got the same feeder, the squirrels went down from the top but mine didn't drop, they cleaned up everything. How come yours dropped, what did I do wrong?

Squirrels are smart enough to learn they can sit on the roof and pull up one or two seeds at a time. It looks like your test needs to be at least a couple of weeks long.

I just bought this bird feeder from Rural King for $24.99. A bit pricey but I like the build quality. It's all metal, has a nice galvanised tin roof and is fairly large. I also like the way the floor is angled to allow the bird seed to slide toward the feeding ports. We haven't had any squirrel problems here at all at least not yet so I'm not so concerned about the squirrel proof part of it. I haven't used it yet but plan on hanging it in the backyard tomorrow so we'll see how it goes. Nice video by the way, thanks!

Yes, your welcome...It's funny, I know there's squirrels here in Owensboro cause I see them in public parks all the time but never seen one in our yard or neighborhood. Rabbits we have but no squirrels...My parents live on the rural outskirts like we do but they don't have squirrels either. It's strange because when we lived in Ohio in the neighborhood we had all kinds of squirrels...

Just jumping on the bar will dislodge a certain amount of seed, which falls to the ground, and that will probably keep him coming back. However, this design certainly limits how much they can steal at once.

Works OK...if you have dumb squirrel. I can introduce you to a couple that will crack it. Just hold on the top hang down and pick the seeds. Why does it have to sit on the bar??? It doesn't. And I have seen squirrels wriggle under a flexible steel roof to get inside!

The Roller Feeder is far better than this one in that the squirrels can't get to it at all. Also this one requires too much effort to refill. Go to this link; I've used one of these for over 9 years and it is still working well and looking good. Plus it's not as large as this one and the color choices are a little less obnoxious than this red (although they do have a red one as well).

This bird feeder is ok in the summer time, but in the winter when you have tons of birds wanting food the door that shuts to keep the squirrels out ( freezes shut and nothing can get bird seed ) . This feeder I have tried and is no good at all in the winter!! It's costs alot and is no good if you get snow and ice!! Sorry but I think it sucks!!! I tested my own this kid did not test it at all!!! Use it for a week in the winter you will HATE it!!! Thanks save your money

I have one and while it is totally squirrel proof (for now), the birds do not like to use it. It only has one small window and has a metal perch. As a check I set up last years wooden feeder near it, mounting it on a greased pole. Both with the same feed. Birds prefer the wooden one with more glass and a wooden perch by a 10:1 ratio. The problem with the wooden one is that one must refresh the grease on the pole every three days or so.

I need a bird-be-gone for my dog's food. He spend most his time outside, and the birds like to eat his food. They take the pieces and dip them in the water dish to make them soft and easier to eat (pretty smart.) Even when you move the water dish to the other side of the yard, they still eat the food.

This is a 7 year old post, but the solution is a microchip feeder, or even a timed feeder. The microchip feeder keeps the food covered in the dish until the dog with the chip comes over, and the food dish opens when it senses the dog's approach. A timer feeder opens only at set times, the dog would likely by hungry by then, and go over when he ears it open.

Makes a terrible bird feeder. Only morning doves use it. However, It attracts hummingbirds very well. SO now I hang hummingbird feeders all around it so I can enjoy my hummingbirds. Also if it rains better cleanout all the bird food that gets stuck in it or it will mold very easily.

I have one. Didn't take the squirrels any time at all to figure out how not to step on the bar and emptied it out onto the ground within a day. Simply hanging it on a tree doesn't work.

NO it is not a good squirrel proof bird feeder. (They do eventually find a way in. ) I bought two of them, which cost me over a $100.00 for both. In our Canadian winter i bought them in to clean which was hard to clean, because the seeds harden and moldy at the front, making it hard to get at to clean, The paint on both feeder change to a dull color. All the big bird find a way to balance on the feeder so it stays open. For $100 bucks I think I wasted my money. I am looking at building a bird feeder using plastic pipe you can find in the plumbing section. :)

I have one of these feeders and I can't recommend it. Squirrels quickly figured out how to take the top off and empty the feeder. So next I bungee corded the top on. The squirrel gnawed threw the bungee cords and ripped the top off. So I put what I thought were heavy duty latches on the the sides of the feeder and clamped the top on. Two days latter the squirrels had learned to flip the latches and again the feeder was empty...except for the squirrel poop they left behind. So next I chained the latches shut and hooked the chains to a cup hook under the feeder. After 8 months the yard rats (aka squirrels) have not gotten the roof off. Instead, they hang over the top and eat what they want. They hang over the top so their weight doesn't close the front opening. Possibly the MousetrapGenius has some remarkably stupid squirrels but I think it's more likely he doesn't want to be the only person fooled by this absolutely NOT squirrel proof bird feeder. It is a nice looking feeder but I find the birds ignore it in favor of every other tube and tray feeder I have out. Buy it only if you think it's cute, not because you think it'll keep the squirrels out because it won't.

first test is invalid. you said birds have to be able to feed on it, but you only allowed chickadees to feed, literally one of the smallest and lightest species that will visit a backyard feeder. why not try it with cardinals or even bluejays, two much bigger much heavier bird species?

It's when I put nuts and fruits out in my attic! Did have starlings try thru a half inch of wood to get in there, determined to wake me daily. This was in the louvers of wood for vents screened on the inside. Two pieces of window screen were pinned on above and below the attack area and then wires to 10,000 volts of DC on a switch to downstairs. The next morning awakened I let it go for just a second and peace and quiet happened. The squirrels are now banished from the attic but are allowed to live under the eave outside the wall. Coming next is live 24/7 video coverage, I found I have a Ir night camera to add to the daytime color coverage of a family affair.

You seemed to have glossed over the function of the ledge with the metal rod that works to keep the squirrels from getting to the food. There are 4-5 slots to place this at. One user said that a bird got its little neck trapped between the metal ledge and the food. If that is the case I won't be using this but I really like the design and shape of the feeder. I'll have to watch for myself. If there is a way to avoid this from happening please share! Thanks!

I’ve had mine for three years now - Left up 24/7 & 365. Still works but hasn’t aged well. Most of the “negative” comments seen below are regrettably true. Squirrels will learn to hang out upside down on the front and stuff their faces with your black oil sunflower seed. The thin plexiglass sheet (covering the windows) will be moved and displaced by the squirrels so they can gain access to the seed. I had to get some two stage epoxy to glue the plexiglass into place. The paint will fade and crack and eventually chip off (quarter sized pieces), especially around the holes where that wire hanger passes through the side body of the feeder. The squirrels will distort the shape of the wire hanger and/or the roof - they actually bent the copper roof panel... unbelievable but true! Think I spent thirty-five bucks for mine (three years ago at Lowe’s) and overall, I’d say there’s got to be a better feeder out there somewhere.

That bird feeder stinks. It’s beautiful, but the birds in my area hate it. All it did was grow grass because the cover doesn’t really stop rain from going into the feeder, and since the birds won’t eat from it, it had time to grow grass from the feeder portion. Also it’s not at all squirrel repellent. Squirrels just hang from the top, put their body between the perch so it can’t close, and eat away.

NOT RECOMMENDED. Why? Pesky squirrels will hang head down from the top and reach the openings with their front paws flushing the seeds out without touching the bar, then go down on the ground and feast. Looks like that puny squirrel brain has out done your big brain again. The only device that worked for me was a baffle installed on the pole.

WRONG !!! It failed the squirrel test since the squirrel was able to get seeds. Sure, it fell off after, but give it a couple of days and your feeder is going to be empty.

Save your money...NONE of these anti squirrel feeders work. Use ANY bird feeder but place it at lease 10 feet from anything a squirrel can climb and mount it on a post with 6 inch PVC pipe or any other 6 inch round item that is smooth where their claws can not grip. Places it over the pole, post or any other support at lease 6 ft high and enjoy bird show with out spending a lot of money to feed the squirrels. Nothing against squirrels but they WILL eat vast amounts of sends compared to the birds.

NOT remotely squirrel proof. They eat out of this constantly by using their back legs to hang from the bar you hang it from, then lean over and chow for hours.

Unfortunately the squirrels figured this one out in less then 15 min. As mentioned previously by another customer, the squirrel wedged himself between tray and bar so it can't close. Then he lay there and cleaned out the feed.
