Next Generation season 4 may be the most consistently good season of Star Trek ever. In my opinion, Season 5 hits higher highs, but the (few) lows are lower. For the record, I would watch if you reacted to MASH, but it's worth watching even if you don't react to it.

Best of Both Worlds they complain about the plan not working and call it a fake out totally ignoring the real cliff hanger of Picard being captured by the Borg heading towards Earth. Seriously? When I saw this back when it originally aired me and my friends figured out that the plan would obviously fail since Picard had implemented it.

A couple things about In Theory: 1) I always thought one of the intriguing things about Data’s character was that you want to like him, you hope he has feelings, and he seems so innocent and sweet and even childlike, and people often laugh at his antics, but there is always this sort of creepy, almost sinister coldness to him. It creates a cool tension. The ending of In Theory really hit me, because it sets up this cutesy almost romcom premise and then it’s so unsettling when he is just so cold. I felt similar in Brothers when Data takes over the whole ship. It’s like, “teehee, silly socially awkward robot did something funny, but he could probably kill us all if he wanted and wouldn’t feel the slightest bit of remorse.” 2) I think they make penultimate episodes intentionally low key to make the finale hit harder.

Actually, the MASH TV show was hugely popular and was one of the first Dramadies, dramatic comedies, with raunchy and dark humor that I think you'll both really like. I love this season of STTNG, but there are still episodes to come that are iconic and some of the best TV episodes of any genre ever.

Part I yes. Part 2 is an A. In part 2 Shelby is completely sidelined as a character and the climax is a talky anti-climactic bore.

@@gregsaum1701 Hmm... not sure she was "side-lined as a character". From what I recall, the tension between her and Riker really played well with the "going out your comfort zone" theme to help create that climax of a cliffhanger. After that, she no longer was needed for that plot device and it became more collaborative and less confrontational. We needed that change in the relationship. We just lost our beloved Captain Picard to the Borg -- a highly traumatic event for the crew and for the audience. If she was still antagonizing, it would have become annoying, fast. I liked the more subtle elegant solution for stopping the Borg as well. There may not have been as much pew-pew, but there was plenty of tension and high stakes to make up for it. Yes, Part 1 was better. But Part 2 was also S-tier in my opinion. At the very least, Part 1 alone, with the greatest cliffhanger of television during that time, is enough to make up for any defects in part 2. But I understand where you are coming from.

Season 4 of TNG is probably the best season of Star Trek so far (though comparing to Season 1 of TOS is obviously difficult). But of course there are at least thirty eight more seasons of Star Trek to come (plus whatever gets made between now and then). And like a lot of you, part of me thinks "Jeez if they like Beyond Belief, which was just slapped together by Fox to get a couple extra bucks out of the most extreme X Files fans, that's the obvious reaction for them to add". But part of me is "Guys, when are we going to get to Season 5 of Lower Decks?!", so if they had the time to do more, more Star Trek, yeah.

What does "S" grade stand for?

In this context it simply represents the highest possible level in a tiered ranking system. It entered use in Western internet culture from Japanese video games that would use this scale when grading a player's performance, commonly action games. Take very little damage, use great technique and you get an A; but take NO damage and use FLAWLESS technique and you get that elusive S. I've read that the original meaning of "S" is to denote the absolute BEST that a performance can achieve. Think of it perhaps as turning an A+ into an S to help set that achievement apart from other A grades and thus incentivize reaching for perfection. Kinda like Top Gun; to even be in the class you're really good, but to be the BEST of that class is its own realm of achievement.

@@c1ph3rpunk I was referring to what I've heard about the rating's origin in Japan. Most tier lists don't deal in plus or minus grades. The theory is that breaking out a grade level for the highest of achievers can serve as positive reinforcement for that extra effort, particularly in academic situations. Student 1 gets an A+ and student 2 gets an A; they're both still A grades. But if Student 1 is given an "S" then the difference feels more significant and fulfills the school's goal of incentivizing students to push themselves to the limits of their ability. I agree, though, that the use of "S" in tier rankings is a little too cute by half, but that's true of a lot of internet culture that has trickled down from video games and other "nerd" culture. There's no real reason not to just number 1-5 or whatever, and I've never been a fan of translating academic grading systems into entertainment ratings.

For me season 5 is significantly weaker than 4, but that may be because I prefer the world building episodes and there are just fewer there. Still, s5 has two of my top 5 episodes so that's good.

Definitely not. Season 3 or maybe 5 are the best of TNG, and probably the best of Star Trek together with TOS season 1 and DS9 Season 6. During Season 4 the actors seem unmotivated at times, with some of the magic from the previous seasons lost in favour of more standard storylines. I think it has a good number of overrated episodes like Brothers, Devil's Due (which should be considered one of the worst of the series), First Contact... While it has some absolutely good ones like Family, Reunion, The Wounded, Drumhead or Clues. I agree with you on Legacy, kinda underrated episode (6,7 IMDb),Half a Life or The Host. But overall I feel this season is more uninspired that the previous one which seemed to have plenty imagination for a variety of storylines and besides "Family" this season never reaches the emotional intensity of Yesterday's Enterprise, Sarek, The Offspring or The Defector for example.

LOLs, no, don't watch MASH. It went on for decades (longer than the war it portrayed). Just know it was a good show that everyone watched, he came in half way through and was this good in all the episodes he was in, so for MASH watchers, we weren't surprised he was this incredible.
