Most common misinterpretation is that USB-C cords are just all the same. Its NOT. USB-C is just an interface or connector type. USB Protocols are what people should be looking at if they planning to buy it for data transfer. Apple now supports USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbit/s) to iPhone 15 Pro models. Regular iPhone still at USB 2 protocol. Any hard drive or SSD that supports USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbit/s) is compatible with iPhone 15 Pro. If your SSD/Hard drive is higher spec-ed like USB-4 Thunderbolt 3/4 or USB 3.2 Gen 2, so long as it supports cross-compatible, it should work fine with iPhone. Issues with audio not being recorded, dropping frames, and cable overheating... either your drive is not fast enough, or the cable you are using do not conform to the USB 3.1 Gen 2. Get a cable and drive that can input and output USB 3.1 Gen 2. The cable supplied out of the box from Apple is ONLY a USB 2 Protocol (480Mbps) and its not meant for data transfer. It is ONLY for charging and light data transfer.

Another method is using the Apple usb-C SD card reader. It’s lighter and you can get a 1tb SD card pretty cheap now. It works, I used it today.

Are you able to view files on an external ssd directly plugged in ? I would definitely upgrade if able to read/write to an external ssd. Currently I have the 12pro max and to use a portable external drive I have to use a powered adapter.

Hi there. I prefer the Samsung T7-pairs well with my iphone 15 pro max...but is a bit heavy when I try to use my insta 360 flow gimbal....so I'm looking for a USB-C thumbdrive that I can connect instead...I will record video in Pro res LT using blackmagic app so I don't need top speed but much faster than regular USB-C thumb drives...have you tested any lately? have you tried the SK 512GB Dual USB C Flash Drive, 2-in-1 External USB 3.2 Gen2? It's a USB drive and it has USB C on one end and regular USB A at the other...I wonder if it is really fast for video recording with my new iphone 15 pro max...easier to carry than my Samsung T7 SSD. Also I want to keep the weight to a minimum so that I can use the drive attached to the phone while on a small gimbal like the DJI Mobile 6 which can only carry 290grams. Thanks

Hi. You might want to try to record and see what happens. The standard Apple cable is not suitable (usb 2.0) especially for ProRes 4k60. Also, some of these drives will show up on the phone when connected with the std cable but when used with a proper usb 3.1 or 3.2 gen 2 cables they will draw more than the 4.5Ŵ limit of the iPhone port and will not connect. One such drive is the SanDisk Extreme Pro

I literally just came across this issue. It wouldnt detect it and if it did the quality was bad/short/choppy. I tried a longer random cable I had Im assuming better since it worked much better but still not nice.

The WD might work with an USB-C to USB-C/HDMI/USB adapter that way you can give power to the hard drive. 🤷🏽‍♀️ also the mini usb-c thumb drives from Samsun will work…

I've only tried Apple's cable and the original ssd and hard drive cables, all work. I will try smaller thumbs and flash soon.

No use mentioning Thunderbolt when youre connecting with the basic USB 2.0 cable. Always use a higher speed cable for data transfer.

Great info here.....just got the iPhone 15 pro max today... still setting it up ( also just got the Hohem M6 which you gotta check out !).... So I wanna shoot 4K videos on the phone.... which obviously will take up a lotta space... so Thank You for this .....I'll probably go for the " slim" T7 Samsung for now !

No. Check youtube. I guy did a test and it does not work. I have the acasis and it does not work.

@@RamirezHD Yeah, I've seen various results. It seems like for some NVME ssds it'll work with certain ones as long as it requires a low wattage to power on and work since the iphone outputs a low wattage.
