when you said that you can get the pool filter sands from a hardware store, I have a local fish store with an outside pool area and I have not looked around there yet so do you think they would sell any pool filter sand..? Thank you and keep it up !

Question: does the pool filter sand work for planted tanks?
@BobMossNanoTanks
@BobMossNanoTanks 6 ай бұрын
Yup! For rooted plants you will probably need root tabs but I used it for a couple of years before switching to black blasting sand.

How deep do you clean your sand if you're using that much sand? I always get an issue of the rhabdocoela population booming and my snails dying after a few months .
@BobMossNanoTanks
@BobMossNanoTanks 3 жыл бұрын
I just skim the surface of the sand with a turkey baster and get the loose detritus. I only have one tank with what I feel are too many rhabdocoela and it's my oldest (was on old water supply for years as well). I feel like the rhabdocoela and your snails dying are different issues, however. I would need more details on the tank to be able to really help you, though.

@@BobMossNanoTanks I had about 1-1.5 in sand in a 3 gallon ramshorn only tank, sponge filter, with dwarf sag anubias, marimo and java fern. Temp 76-78. I didn't feed the snails that much, maybe a quarter of a wafer once week or blanched vegetable once a week. The nicrew is on for about 10 hours . Water test results would always be 0,0, 0-5 ppm. Water changes would be 25-50% a week sometimes twice, I would clean out detritus with a turkey baster, but usually around the 3 month mark was where copepods, detritus worms and especially rhabdocoela would just boom, and I would get pockets of anaerobic areas while I water changed, and this would be when the snails would lay eggs but none of the babies would survive after hatching. People suggest stirring, but I've seen so many planted tanks with sand and I doubt they are stirring it up and disrupting roots all the time.
@BobMossNanoTanks

@@tic857 The babies aren't surviving but the adults are still alive? This would be a food issue, perhaps there isn't enough biofilm / algae in the tank?

@@BobMossNanoTanks the glass walls have green spot and dust algae. I hardly ever clean the glass unless its the front which I only do once a month. It just seems like they are fine while on the glass but once they migrate down to the sand, they just die.

With such fine sand, won’t the layer under go anaerobic, and start bumbling swamp gas?
@BobMossNanoTanks
@BobMossNanoTanks Жыл бұрын
Do you mean the blasting sand? I haven't experienced this, myself. It is a good idea to poke the substrate during cycling to remove any air bubbles.

@@littleshopintheshed i could see it happening if you put in a thick layer. i generally suggest 1-2 inches if no root feeders are being planted, so this wouldn't be a big issue.

I’m confused. Pool sand, sand blasting sand, etc. all have silica which states is harmful and to wear an n95 mask and all that junk. Wouldn’t putting it in your aquarium be a death sentence to the critters?
@BobMossNanoTanks
@BobMossNanoTanks 2 жыл бұрын
I think that's if you're actually using it as sand blasting sand as the particles can be very small. Just using it as substrate is no problem and totally safe.
