Great video! May I suggest for future jams & jellies you fill the jar to 1/4 or 1/2 inch from the top. Then wipe the rims with a paper towel or clean cloth dipped in white vinegar. Then put on the lids & rings and water bath the filled jars for 10 minutes. After water bath set hot jars on a towel for 12-24 hours before moving them. You can also cover the hot jars with a towel if you have the air conditioner going so the jars cool gradually. This will make them shelf stable for at least a year & often much longer.

I've done it that way in the past and that's the proper way, I totally should have done it that way this time also. I'm a true rookie! Thank you for watching and the feedback.

Why do you gradually cook the jars? First time canner here
@vonkirkus71152 жыл бұрын
@@cscar1385 It serves 2 purposes. You want your jars good and warm so that they don't crack from the sudden temperature change when putting in the hot product, and it also sterilizes the jar. Any trace of microscopic bacteria or mold spores would quickly spoil all your hard work and possibly could give you food poisoning. Randall has brought us a good recipe here that I want to try, but you might want to watch a few more different canners on YT and observe different techniques for safety, that's what I was doing when I found this great recipe being cooked up...this advice is from a non-expert 🤠

My goodness. It looks beautiful! I also turn jars upside down for a few minutes. Right now my fig doesnt produce enough at one time for jam. More fig trees next year. Cant wait to hablve enough figs to try this.

it's about the only good thing about having a large brown turkey fig, makes good jelly and preserves. Thanks for watching.
@vonkirkus71152 жыл бұрын
A video I watched said the purpose for turning the jar over for 5 minutes was that if by any chance a mold spore or any microscopic contaminat suspended in the air that got in the jar inadvertently while sealing it, although unlikely, the still very hot product would neutralize it, and it also helps create the seal. The telltale ring of product around the opening also shows the one first opening the jar that it was done, which in some circles is considered the only proper way, especially, if it's not finished in a hot water bath after filling. Made sense to me.

Where in Alabama? Do you have room for a fig in a pot?
@wandakelly21733 жыл бұрын
My grandparents lived in Eufaula. I used to stay a few weeks each summer with them and we would fish and can. Loved it. I do have room for a container on my sunny deck. I am just not sure how to care for it in a pot and what variety to purchase. I recently picked some figs from someone’s tree. Early July and only got a few. I felt like I had a secret 😊

Childhood memories are the best! If you are interested in keeping a fig I recommend ourfigs.com and Facebook Group: What the Fig . If you are interested in a tree you can find a few for sale on figbid.com I just bought a couple of trees at my local Lowes. Thank you for watching and sharing your story :)

Found your channel from this video. I grew up in East Brewton just up the road. Jumped off Wolf Log bridge a time or two and in my day was a bit infamous, but God was gracious. When I saw Flomaton, I knew there was no other. Loved the story of Flomaton Famous, and how FloraBama wrote ya'll a cease and desist. How gracious of you guys to give them some publicity for that in your name change announcement. The new name is genius to me. But, that's coming from an infamous redneck from East Brewton that was actually born in Evergreen. So, my genius probably don't count for much. Checked out your channel and just love you both. I've transplanted up the road a little way to Millbrook across the Alabama River from Montgomery. Transferred here to follow my job in 2000. Just retired this July. Planted 2 fig trees in my subdivision front yard last year and looking like a good crop is going to come off, so I was looking at some different preserve canning techniques on YT and came across your jelly canning. Definitely want to try it out. God bless you both and I wish you the best. It's great to have a partner to share this life with. When God looked at all He had made it was all very good, but They (Triune Godhead) said it was NOT good, that man should be alone...let Us make a mate suitable for him....it's there in Genesis...the Master Gardner's manual 🤠 God's richest blessings on you two, I love that your keeping it real....Maybe I can talk Emily into us doing a channel? Don't hold your breath 🤠

Good morning, thank you for the wonderful comment. If you guys are ever in the area just give us a heads up and you can stop by for a visit. I agree with all the biblical stuff you talked about. We have been blessed richly. Glad you could reflect on growing up in Flomaton. Kids don't seem to have the same experiences we had growing up. Thank you again for watching and supporting.

Awesome Video ! I have never try making fig jelly but guess will have to try a batch before figs end. If you stay with foam on top i cut wax paper off the roll sit it on top of jelly in the pot for a few seconds and most of it come off.. all of my jelly been setting here so I never have to flip it.. Thank s For Shout Out ! I have 3 tier pot that extract just the juice…

A lot of fruit juices change color when you add acid like lemon juice. It's kinda like litmus paper, only way tastier!
