Great video Jack. Most people that create this style of video ramble on for way too long or either lean into gimmicks or click bait or don't have solid ideas to contribute. These all felt short concise thoughtful and poignant. Reinforcing the basics and giving ppl a general direction when it comes to improving.

I am a 32 year old dad. I’ve played competitive sports most of my life between golf and hockey. I miss the competitive play. This game fills my competitive itch. And I feel like I’m playing a competitive sport. It makes me want to practice and play better every time I get on. I will never try to go pro obviously as this is a young man’s game. But I want to be good enough to atleast play gc3 level at some point. Since it came out free I’ve put almost 2k hours in. And am so close to pushing gc1. I’ve been riding c2 c3 for a few seasons now. Now I’m in the fine tuning stages of what I know and how I play. I love this game and for whatever reason everyday I just want to get on and grind and get better. Love watching all the pro play. Gl next season jack! Hopefully FK fits your team well.

5:05 as bruce lee said “i am not scared of the person who knows 10,000 kicks. But i am afraid of the person who knows one kick but has practices it for 10,000 times” in rocket league terms, be the person who is insanely good at 1 thing to the point you know what to do and how to do it in every situation because you will be a lot more unstoppable than if you know everything but have nothing as refined as that person that knows that one thing

That is crazy that you got high champ even GC after a few months of playing. I genuinely think you're one of the fastest improving players in the game which lead to your Major win.
@sunzy66298 ай бұрын
12:23 I can actually understand that. I'm not too good at the game (Champ 1) but I remember when if first got the game I was stuck around silver/gold and I was not consistent at all. Watching pro play I remember redirects being something that really stood out to me. I would then practice it relentlessly. It took a few months to get consistent with, but I was spending maybe 1-2 hours just in custom training packs doing redirects. And it wasn't the redirects that got me better, but it was the better ball control, car control, aerial control, and power that I gained from trying to learn redirects that really launched my rank up. I started in 2020, and by the end of 2021 to early 2022, I was D2

8:12 A good example of slowmo outside of rocket league is when you're learning music. You can't play through the fire and the flames first try at full speed. You have to play it note-by-note to understand what's going on and this is true for any song you will ever learn on any instrument.
@timbelcijan985811 ай бұрын
It's pretty ironic that as a musician it took me way too long to try slow mo for practise, because I'd been playing the game for so long before the option was there I felt like I had to prove to myself I don't need any 'crutches' to improve, I just gotta put more hours in but actually getting a decent look at what's happening between my car and the ball and having enough time for my brain to figure it out has helped me understand a lot of intricacies of the game's behaviour.

For me, my "reach out" is fakes, simple drift cuts (and fluid/aggressive ground control), and mental "sync"ing the 2nd defender in 2s. When I "lock on" to the player, I watch and mirror them until I'm in their rotation path and use very slight bumps or miniboost control to deny pressure and de-fang a play. Once I have control then, I like to literally hop, skip, and jump my way to the goal, playing keep away lol. Also hairline defence, saving the impossible, actual godsend content in any game, especially Rocket League.

Almost 30 w/ full time job and school here. Play time is limited, but I can absolutely vouch for the warm up and slo mo tips. My warm up routine solidified a few months ago with freeplay at 85-90% for 15 ish minutes before I play a single game. Before the hard reset I was scraping C1, never hit it but always right there. After the hard reset I'm like 1 div below where I was. At first I was discouraged because I didn't see my rank reflecting my improvement. Then I played some cas with a guy that was C2-C3 and I was keeping up with no problem. Before my routine I would have been left in the dust, and then it hit me how valuable those were to improving. Long reply but TL;DR slow mo and warming up are HUGE tips! Thanks for posting Jack!

The last point applies to everything in life, if you want to be great at something you have to be obsessed. Obsession isn't necessarily a negative thing. Slowmo is extremely underrated. It's been such a valuable but underused tool since it was introduced and we grinded solo private matches with it. 12:55 remember Jack coming up in 1s his flicks did HARD carry his game, he's absolutely right about grinding out something to fit you.

The point about practicing what reaches out to you is a really important thing to mention and something I think some guides may fail to state. The reality is this is a video game. For all but the very very top, this is not a sustainable career path, this is something we do for fun. If you are going to carve out time to improve at something with so little life impact as a video game talent, then please, just focus on what you enjoy, don't force yourself to practice things you don't like and burn yourself out on the game you're investing so many hours practicing.

Good video dude! I truly respect that you included the concept of not letting the game take over your life - some pros / streamers are toxic and convey a message that "in order to get good at this game, you need to make sacrifices in your life", and I'm just sad for all the kids that literally take that advice. It's all about balance, and if there's something you want in life, rocket league is the thing you should sacrifice

Jack, can I add one thing to your expert advice that I believe you agree with? Intention in freeplay! It's powerful because the brain gets immediate feedback on what's wrong when you visualize what you want specifically in the first place. Ex. If you see a clean front flip in your mind but execute a flip too high, you'll figure out how to fix it whereas without the intention, you won't care much in the first place. LMK if this is bs. Without intention player: "Bang, bang, bang, bang" with intention: "Bang at wall, catch, flick score. Bang at specific part of wall, rebound shot.... missed... try again fixing error with corner of car" using the brain.

Tip number 4, I truly believe I play better without a warm up, but I think the reason for it is an even bigger issue. When I first start the game, I join and I think I have a clean slate, and I will go for balls with full confidence and no hesitation. The momment I start whiffing or don't hit the ball the way I want to, I'll start hesitating and my play with become slower which leads down a spiral of not getting to the ball first thinking the opponets are just at a higher level so on and so forth. Atleast that is how my expierce has been, and I think even in just training, when I'm trying to practice a specific shot and I miss, even that gets to me. I also started fairly strangely when playing rocket league, I would play on and off never really sinking any time into the game, but recently when I've started to play more frequently, it was because I have two friends who were already low-mid diamond level, and I just started joining them, so I had to learn how to be of use to them, so I feel like I ended up skipping the basics, and trying to learn a little more advance stuff. I can somewhat Arieal and either hit it on target, or arieal pass to one of my teamates, but I cant dribble to save my life. All of this combined I think Leads to my extremely inconsistent play. On a good day, I'd say I'm around Platnium 2, and on a bad day I think I'm around as low as a Gold 2.

Also, something that has been powerful for me for ranking up is playing Bo5s in matchmaking. This works for any game. If you lose the Bo5, you have to get off and do something else. I got to Champion 25 (25th in the world) on Halo 5 in 2018 by applying this discipline and playing 8 hours a day.

For me, speeding up the game is more beneficial. It forces me to analyze more quickly. Then the game at normal speed feels like it's on easy mode. It's hard to describe but it's like I can see a few inputs ahead and I'm more ready for it and have more time to react. Anyway, Jack, great presentation, as always. I always appreciate your insight. I find it so helpful. Also, it's so funny you mention nailing one skill. I've been kinda goofing around with flicks more often than usual, and something told me to try harder, but now that idea is solidified. Thank you!

On tip 4: I always warm up quite a bit before playing. One of the things I'm currently working on is pacing myself correctly, because I often go too fast so I have to kill my momentum or I'm out of position etc. (1900 player). I noticed not warming up helps me play slower and forces me to pace myself correctly coz I can't rely on mechanics as much to get myself out of the awkward situations I put myself in. I still believe warming up will do more good than bad for most players, but I wanted to make a point that there are positives to not warming up, or warming up less.

The last one about breathing the game is so true. As of typing this, I'm listening to it while walking to school. And everytime I'm in school, I just watch high level pro gameplay or champ gameplay. And as soon as I get home I work on my dribbles and try to learn how to fetelix jump. So while "breathing the game" sounds cringey, it is super true.

Yeah id have to 100% agree with warm up but i get lazy. After this video i will make it a point to warm up. I usually warm up by going in to training and hitting the champ pack and even if i get a shot i try to aim the shot and try to be precise and try to get power on it and things like that. Then when i go into a game i actually hit open nets but without the warmup ill generally miss the most open nets. Id also like to point out that air dribble speak to me the most. The ability to take it across field under your control with the guarenteed 50, is insane. I think its extremely important.
