I agree whole heartedly in knowing what you have before you sell. This is a true statement regardless of what you have weather it is comics, coins, stamps, baseball cards or anything else.

thx for commenting on my posts. here is where I am at with my comic books. I took the box from mom's closet and brought it home. Went through it twice and found the valuable ones. I took pics of the most valuable one - three sets and mailed them to three dealers. I know they will low ball me but it is a start. What do you recommend the next step is? I have not rated or sent them to is it CGC or that company that embalm's them into those plastic cases.

Hey Mark. Honestly, if you're picking apart the collection and singling out books, I wouldn't sell them to dealers. They are going to give you pennies on the dollar for the most part. Are you still selling?

@@JernosComicsPopCulture I got a really crappy offer on my valuable one. Another guy with a lcs is kind of advising me. He says slab it and put it in an auction. He wants a 2 grand for i dont know what. Finding the buyer is key .I hear comics are going crazy. thank goodness I have time. I would love to speak with you. Great question! I am not too familiar with them individually as I personally don't sell comics, but you can find ones that might look for specific keys and might be willing to negotiate a win/win situation. Many of those places have the resources to focus on keys and send them out for a press and clean and get them graded, which will maximize their profit margins, so coming at the seller with a more feasible offer sometimes is worth it for them.

My brother has a large silver age collection, (that I ruined many of by tracing when I was young) and I'm wondering does this strategy hold for a collection that old? Or is that old enough to sell each individually?
@JernosComicsPopCulture
@JernosComicsPopCulture 4 жыл бұрын
Great question! My first question for you is, are you looking to sell? If so, I might be interested! But to your question, it really boils down to how much time and effort you want to put into it. With silver age, you might be able to sell smaller lots of say 10 to 20 books, instead of selling the collection as a whole, but this would definitely take some work on your part. If you think he might have a Spider-Man #1 or Hulk #1 or something big like that, it might take the effort of you going through every single book. The more you know about what you have, the more you can gauge what it's worth, so there might be a middle ground somewhere that would be fitting for you. Say, for example, you aren't willing to sell it all off for dirt cheap, but yet you don't want to spend a whole lot of time going through it, so maybe you can do a little bit a leg work, and get a decent amount of money that will at least make you feel the sale was worth it.

@@JernosComicsPopCulture Thanks for the advice. His collections start at around FF #28 and ASM #15 or so and run through 1968. I'm ashamed that if it were not for my misguided artistic efforts, they might be worth quite a lot more! He was intrigued by the idea of responding to requests, so he may start doing that...

The X-Men Ann is not a cameo. It's Gambit's first full appearance.
@JernosComicsPopCulture
@JernosComicsPopCulture 4 жыл бұрын
The industry (Marvel, Overstreet, CGC, etc) recognizes it as a cameo appearance and uncanny 266 as his first full appearance. I myself have my own issues regarding the whole 'cameo' status, but ultimately, our personal opinions on what a first appearance is doesn't change what the industry dictates, and ultimately what the market dictates.
@thundergodd6086
@thundergodd6086 4 жыл бұрын
What happened is that X-Men 266 was supposed to be published before X-Men annual came out. The problem is that it was delayed for a week or two and the Annual came out first, thus making it Gambit's true first appearance. A cameo is considered one or two panels. Gambit is in the book for at least a full two pages. Don't believe me? Go read it yourself. Two pages is NOT a cameo. Most people have never read the book, so they keep believing what on the internet. Same thing happened with the Incredible Hulk 181. For years it was touted as the first appearance of Wolverine. Until fans actually started reading the books and realized his actual first appearance was in Hulk 180. After realizing this, the term changed to "full" appearance for Hulk 181. The "Industry" is slow to acknowledge this because the internet keep perpetuating this myth and it would put egg on their faces.
@JernosComicsPopCulture
@JernosComicsPopCulture 4 жыл бұрын
Look, you voice the same frustrations that I myself have when it comes to the industry and how they label these things. I know about the two pages of Annual 14. I agree with you that the idea that Annual 14 is a "cameo" is utter nonsense. But it doesn't matter what you and I think. If the industry dictates what is a first full appearance and what is a cameo, then that is how it is, UNLESS, the consumers begin to go against the industry and demand different, which, unfortunately, is not going to happen collectively. The demand for Annual 14 will never be greater than the demand for Uncanny 266, therefore, the industry will never change Annual 14 to Gambit's first true appearance. This all happened before the internet and social media as well, and it stuck for decades. It might be different if a situation like this happened currently, because social media would allow consumers to have more of a voice. But this isn't changing. So please, no need to turn this into a frustrating argument with me. I ultimately agree with your logic and with the issue behind the labeling of these books, but the thing you have to understand is that the industry dictates the labels, and we as consumers then dictate the market, and even though I do believe more people are waking up and demanding more of these "cameos" to be seen as first appearance, it is not a strong enough collective effort to ever change the label that the industry dictates.
@thundergodd6086
@thundergodd6086 4 жыл бұрын
@@JernosComicsPopCulture I disagree. As I've stated before, for years Hulk 181 was touted as the first appearance of Wolverine. Until the fans actually started reading the books and realized his actual first appearance was in Hulk 180. After realizing this, the term for Hulk 181 changed from "first" appearance to "first full" appearance. I believe eventually this will happen for Gambit as well when the fans start actually reading the book. Just because the "industry" keeps trying to perpetrate a lie (which it is), that doesn't make it the truth, or right. And if fans help perpetrate that lie, they are complicate in keeping that lie alive, thus fans continually buying X-Men 266. People follow your channel, thus it's your duty to put out the right and proper information, DESPITE what the "industry" says. As you yourself stated, you know about those two full pages of Gambit in the X-Men annual. And according to "industry" standards, that is NOT a cameo in any way, shape or form.
@JernosComicsPopCulture
@JernosComicsPopCulture 4 жыл бұрын
Again, I agree with the heart of your argument, but your logic is a bit incorrect. Just because CGC or Overstreet states 181 as a "first full appearance," it doesn't change the fact that they STILL dictate 180 to be a "cameo appearance." And that is the same thing with Annual 14 and 266. We can agree to disagree, no harm. But ultimately we do agree on the base of this argument. We do agree that the industry is wrong with how they label first appearance. But what you are still not grasping is that we are still demanding, as collective consumers, what the industry dictates. Hulk 180 will never be worth more than Hulk 181. ASM 299 (full page of Venom with speech bubble) will never be worth more than 300, Avengers 195 (Full page of Taskmaster with speech bubble) will never be worth more than 196, and Uncanny Annual 14 will never be worth more than Uncanny 266. It's just not going to happen. Honestly? I don't even like the word cameo being a way to label anything that has to do with a "first." Cameo, by definition, has NOTHING to do with a first appearance, but rather a GUEST appearance. For comics, the true dictionary definition of a "cameo" would be if Cyclops appeared in an issue of the Avengers. That would be a "cameo" appearance, because he is a guest making a temporary appearance in another character's story. The industry should have never used "cameo" to dictate "first." A more accurate label would be "sneak appearance," for a case where we only see someone in the shadows, or we do not clearly see the character in a way to be fully introduced to them. This conversation is one that i love to talk about, and I want to see these so-called "cameo" appearances get more steam behind them, because I truly believe that most "cameo" appearances are true first appearances. Many people feel the same, and have been allowing the market to recognize these books more and more over the last few years. Still, from a business standpoint, it will never be enough to change the industry's status quo, and it will never be enough to change buyer's perspective that would change the market.

But what my kids dont keep and wife needs money leaving her with 3 kids she might need to sell. And she knows shit about comics. I'm not ready to sell them yet so not sure what I'm gonna do. My local lcs that ive been with for years said they won't rip her off but who knows I won't...so trying to figure out easiest way. She has a crap load of comics and sports memoribilia to sell...this doesn't sound like the way to go though.

First, I want to share my sentiments... I do not have the words to express. I also want to acknowledge your strength to be able to be so open about your situation. You are right, there is no easy answer here. I am sure your LCS wouldn't "rip her off," but ultimately, an LCS can't pay close to FMV because they have overhead. If you want to email me, please do so at: captainjernocomics@gmail.com. I would be happy to take the time to try to help you figure out some goals. If you need your wife to talk with me to that would be fine as well. Knowing that you have kids makes your situation even more important. So please, don't hesitate to reach out.
