When each of my daughters grows up and moves out, I'll outfit them each with a full beginners set of tools. Boxes like these are an essential part. I have the Harbor Freight set that rounded out my start, but I like the look of the Kobalt kit. These, a 40v starter kit, and other essential hand tools and testing gear will get them started with a decent DIY kit. And when they call dad for help, I'll know there are tools there to bang out a quick fix.

My daughter moved out this year. I bought her the Harbor Freight cube set and just added a little hack saw and a hammer. It is perfect for what she will use it for. I told her if anything breaks. We will replace it with better quality tools at that time.

I bought my niece a 257 piece Kobalt 2 drawer kit when she moved into her new house. I liked it because it was more of a homeowner kit with a hammer, level, tape measure, and the rest of the essentials. It was $99 on Black Friday and I got it for the reason it was an actual cube. I was afraid with a briefcase style she could slide it under things or behind things and have it get lost. The cube style made it nice for her to sit in its own spot on a shelf in her closet and it’s always accessible. Kits like these are extremely nice for people that don’t really work on things because it’s a piece of mind for the dads/uncles that do work on things that they have tools ready to go when we get there to fix things.

Excellent video. I purchased the Sam's Club Channel lock set 18 years ago or so back when they included regular wrenches. INCREDIBLE value. Over time pieces (as you say) went our for milk and never came home. I just ordered the same set on Ebay for $79.00 total shipped after taxes. The inclusion of ratcheting wrenches is a definite bonus. Anyone would be hard pressed to find a better option at that price especially for a truck box.
@mytuberforyou

The HF Pittsburgh kit is IMO the best deal- the wrenches are not great on the finish but they sell fairly cheap fully polished wrench kits, and the pliers are mediocre, but the other items are exceptional for the money. Plating is nice and heavy on the sockets, clearly legible markings (big plus) ratchet handles are very good- for the price. The box leaves a little to be desired but it's anti-spill and designed to be a compact truck/portable box. Most importantly the selection of tools is pretty much optimal, including all the wonky torx sizes european auto manufacturesrs like to use.

For friends or family, I usually recommend any of the sets that are handiest to add to, or replace under warranty at the local box stores. So Kobalt if you’re near a Lowe’s and Husky for Home Depot. But there are lot’s of good sets for home use and occasional mechanical repairs.

I bought the Husky 270 piece kit for a buddy just starting out, and I bought the GearWrench for myself, to keep in the Jeep. $200 looked steep, but the quality is there. I love their ratcheting wrenches, and I like that they include both the 6 point and 12 point 3/8 metric sockets, which come in handy for certain starters (like some Cummins).

Oh yes. "200 piece pickup." I remember that game ... and not fondly! I got the Pittsburgh 301 piece set for my work van. It comes in a nice box with lift-out trays like the DeWalt 226 piece set that you mentioned, so nothing spills. It was a good starter set, but missing some stuff I consider essential, so I added a tool bag with the missing items in it. Some of those are a 1/2" breaker bar, locking pliers, groove joint pliers, a full set of ratcheting combination wrenches in SAE and metric, and a pry bar set, just to name a few. I actually paid more for the pickup pieces that I put into the bag than I did for the ready-made Pittsburgh set. But I LOVE this set. The tools are made in Taiwan and are of reasonable quality. I don't think I would want it to use on a daily basis on the job, but you know what? I would love to see someone do just that and see how they hold up.

@@michaelmiller1109 it’s a hard thing to do, anymore. My dad was a mechanic, (60’s - 80’s) and the hand me downs I still have from him are better tools than most of the stuff I buy for myself today. He turned mostly Craftsman, and SK, Thorsen, Proto, stuff. Armstrong, remember them? You can’t buy tools that good anymore at a worthwhile price if you don’t wrench for a living. And it’s super tough to buy stuff that wasn’t made in China. That three drawer box from Craftsman, (Box Only) will either be made in US or Mexico, and you can be pretty sure with Tekton, that even if Asian made, it won’t be Chinese. And it will have old school warranty. Might cost you $300 to set up a box for your son, but it will be a good box. Good luck to you.....

We have a GearWrench a lot like that one on our service trucks at work. I’m not a huge GW fan, but that case is pretty good. It has the tabs to lock the drawers in, which will slide out easily. It’s a good starter set or mobile set. I’m considering getting one like that for my brother. I know you pointed it out a few times (and I’m glad you did), but I hate it when these companies boast about a 270 piece set and then it has 60 bits and 40 Allen keys in it. When looking at the sets, take a look and see what it actually has in it versus looking for the biggest piece count (especially when you’re looking for a “bang for your buck” set).

I have the $99 husky one, it’s good quality. It’s pretty nice and I really like it. It’s nice to have everything in one place as far as sockets and wrenches go. I did add a couple of wrenches so it’s not a skip set. I use the 1/2” sockets with my impact. Don’t really worry about it since I have a Home Depot a few minutes down the road and a lifetime warranty on the sockets. The only ding on is the bottom drawers don’t lock in place so they can slide out while you’re moving the box if you’re not careful

The Stanley 201 fluctuates, I got one for my brother to keep in the trunk a while back for 69.99 on Amazon. It lacks wrenches but has a decent 3/8 socket selection. I have the Dewalt Toughsystem set in one of the work trucks and it has an excellent socket and ratchet assortment. It also lacks wrenches and I had to go through Hell finding Dewalt wrench sets that went above 11/16 or 15mm to go in the top. I added those and some pliers and it works out great, heavy and durable. The Gearwrench set is by far the best, the Ratcheting Wrench set doesn't skip sizes and when you wait until after Christmas, it makes everything else in the box gravy as they go for about $169.00. I grabbed the $99 ratchet set they had also. You can get just about any minor to moderate job done in the drive way with this one. Best bang for the buck is probably the 290 piece Husky.

I’ve had the Kobalt box set for at least 7 years now, used all of it a lot. I work on cars, small power equipment, house stuff, anything and everything. I haven’t had one problem with any of the tools from the set. Only thing I’d like is to have the sizes stamped or cut into the sockets, rather than laser printed. The kobalt just has the the extra drawer in the bottom that I can store more of my other tools like telescoping ratchets, screwdrivers, impact sockets etc. I think I made the right decision, the husky had more tools but it was mostly just a few more wrenches and a lot more of small bits, and not to mention the lack of extra space in the box for other tools.

I have the Crescent CTK170. I'm very happy with it! I only replaced the non-magnetic spark plug socket with a proper magnetic socket so that my spark plugs don't fall out. Any extra tools I need to work on my car not included in this kit is kept in a separate toolbox. These are items such as three ratcheted wrenches, one thin wrench for the rear brakes, oil filter socket, U-joints, longer extensions, an assortment of picks, and wire cutters. I'm disappointed with the downsizing of the Crescent CTK180 kit. The half-inch socket wrench I have in my kit gets heavy usage! I would be lost without it.

Lowe’s has the 105-pc Craftsman Gunmetal sets on clearance for only $55 (reg $139!!) and the ratchets are 120 teeth! Sweeeeet! Got one of those on order, too! Thanks, Jeff! Aloha!

I like cut a sheet of cardboard in the shape of the tool container. And then close it with the cupboard in between the tools. It keeps them from popping out and moving around when being transported.

I've never liked those flat handle Craftsman ratchets either (I had a set back in the 90s when they were still USA made). I never really paid much attention to those box sets until this year when my daughter started getting ripped off by mechanics 600 miles from dads massive tool collection! I'll be buying her a set as a Christmas gift and I've been wondering if the drawers stay closed or not, now I know lol! Since I'll be having it shipped to her, I was leaning toward one of the Kobalt sets but that GearWrench set caught my eye. The one thing I noticed about it is that it only includes 2 ratchets. That irritates me because I don't trust those 3/8" to 1/4" adapters. I guess it won't be a big deal to order a real 1/4" ratchet along with it though. Oh...I just looked at it on the HD site and realized that it's only 1/4" and 3/8" drive. I guess I'll have to keep looking.

I definitely prefer the Husky over the Kobalt purely because of the easy to read sockets with Husky vs Kobalt and the laser etching that is near impossible to read. The one amazing box I've seen in the past is the 192 piece Dewalt socket/ratchet set where all sockets are six point and the only fluff is allen key sets (I'm beginning to think all their sets contain all six point sockets). I picked that one off at military exchange last year but have seen it elsewhere in one of the big box stores for a very close comparable price at about $100.

I like the DeWalt Toughsystem box because it has the tray for adding additional necessities for road side work like tongue and groove pliers, ball peen, and multimeter. I might have to pick one of those up. I know several guys who use the bifold DeWalt boxes from Tractor Supply as grab and go boxes.

The 290 pc husky set is a great set. $149 for black friday 2021. However, those little locking tabs on the sides are almost useless. Lift the box and tilt slightly and the tabs open up and the drawers slide right out all over the floor.

This is great info - I'm looking for my 16 year old son - mostly mechanics tools that he'll use when he is on his own. The toughest part is figuring out what he may want to round out the initial set over the years. I still have my original wrench, plyers and socket sets gifted when I was about his age - almost all Craftsman and only a few have been replaced (the 1/4" ratchet and a longer flat blade screw driver). I (like the Bear) have a bias towards Craftsman but I also own other brands and they seem to be decent. It's good to be in an era of a lot of competition but it makes deciding tough too. Thanks again for the overview - lots of great points (six or twelve) to consider - you shine on as well Tool Bear!

I bought the Husky 290-piece set last year. It looked to be the better option between them and Kobalt. I also liked the idea of those locking flaps for the drawers. Unfortunately, the locking flaps didn’t help much…the case is not balanced front to back when holding it by the handle, so if you pick it up by the handle, it will lean heavily with the drawers facing downward. The weight of the contents of the drawers at that angle is enough to overcome the locking flaps. I’ve had the drawers dump out twice. I think in hindsight I’d rather spend the extra money on the DeWalt Tough case if I want something that can be carried, even if it’s just up/down the stairs at home.

Has storage bags to add more tools you need carry. Has the most sockets and deep sockets, and 20 piece combo spanner wrenches. It's normal $129, but goes on sale $89 to $99

I have the channel lock set from Sam's Club. I also have the Crescent set from Amazon that has 3 ratchets. I got them for both good deals a few years ago. The crescent wrench set the Alan set tend to fall out it gets kind of annoying sometimes. The Box on the Crescent set has started to break a little bit. My channel lock set I used today at to get bolts off of a semi exhaust they worked great. Definitely not fancy tools but they get the job done. My favorite though is the Crescent set as far as tool Quality.

A couple years ago I bought the lowes brand Kobalt set. Too be honest, the box is junk, the sockets pop out and the plastic deforms. I just took all the sockets out of it. The numbers are also hard to see. I wish I would have gotten the Stanley black set to be able to see the sizes easier. But my closest home depot is an hour away.

Jeff, will you do a video about sockets...6-point versus 12-point, short versus deep...1/4, 3/8, 1/2...do we really need them all or is there an ideal set?
@JakeNaughtFromStateFarm
@JakeNaughtFromStateFarm 3 жыл бұрын
For what it’s worth, i say it really comes down to application. I prefer 1/4 and 3/8 set over 1/2 (more versatile since they’re smaller). I also would have 6 point sockets over 12 point. 6 point are much more common, again, depending on what you need it for.

I am in dire need of a mechanics set and funds are tight. In the past I would just go to my older brother's for repairs and we'd do those repairs at his house. He passed away 2 years ago and now it's just me to do those repairs. His son's now have his tools but they are too busy for getting together to work on stuff like we did. The small old set I have is not enough, I'm looking at buying a set like the Kobalt or similar.
