Best Tools for Finding Unmarked Anchorages!

The Tula Shop - tulasendlesssum... In this short video we talk a bit about some of the best tools for finding unmarked anchorages especially off the ICW. We use Navionics for navigation and really like the community edits and comments about anchorages. We also use satellite view to feel our way into unmarked anchorages. We use google maps with the satellite layer turned on and also a free app called “distance measure” but I’m sure there are a ton of other ones out there.

We boat on the Tennessee River and I will often consult satellite images before we travel into a new area. It just helps to see the other landmarks, such as large homes and docks that would not necessarily be visible on a traditional chart. My favorite video? Your first video that I ever watched was one where Billy and Jetty were doing a repair on Neverland while Sierra was at work. Most likely it was a fiberglass repair, because I had been researching for another boat project that I have sitting in the yard. Anyway, I was hooked when you guys started cruising and sharing your video from all the places that you visit. Keep up the great work! I love the mix of work, cruise and play that you produce each week.

My favorite video was when Jetty went for a swim leaving mom & dad to worry, but ever so happy to be found. This one made me cry, it opened my eyes to how easy it is to lose the fur baby over board. I really like when Jetty meets friends or goes romping on the shore. I also like when the tiger shark swam near your boat, when you all swam with dolphins, as well as the whale shark episode! Your videos are a really nice mix of educational info and life on a boat. We are on trimarans with about 18" of draft if need be so satellite views are super handy! We navigated our 31' tri from Highborne Cay to South West Allan Cay in the Bahamas over shoals using satellite views, Navionics and rather sketchy visibility into the water as it was really windy. Thrilling!

Another well done vid. I do like this type of vid. One of the reasons that I like watching your vids is because you do a good job of showing a decent amount of details of the areas that you are traveling. For me it is as much about the research for my future plans to cruise from the Carolinas to Grenada as it is for the entertainment value. That said, I personally very much like and want to see the details on the routes and comments on your reasons for these routes related to navigation. Anchorage details, fuel, restaurants etc.. as much as that stuff as you can share is also great. I’m very much interested in the navigation stuff as you go back to the Bahamas and head south from there. The Bahama Banks seem to me more challenging on this part vs. from the Turks & Caicos down which is much more straight forward due to the much greater depths in and out of harbors/anchorages. I also use Google Earth/Maps Sat views in conjunction with Navionics App, solid advise to others. Safe Travels

Fav: Paddle Boarding across the Bahama Bank! You can also use the sat view not only to find a good anchorage, but, once anchored, to see what is close by around you onshore to go for shopping, eats, etc. as well as local docks you can dinghy to and if it is feasible to walk to you desired destination.
