Thanks for all of your upgrade and experience videos on these TRX4 trucks. They helped lead me to buying the Bronco version and it has been a lot of fun. You inspired me today with your Best 5 Free Upgrades video to do a little more tweaking. The one thing I totally overlooked that was staring me in the face was the shock setup. I didn't have any appropriate springs in the parts bin but just dialing them almost all the way soft helped a lot. And you're so right, the oil in them is way too heavy. I also remembered that I had a bag of lead fishing shot weights. I don't care too much about the stock wheels as they'll get swapped out pretty soon for some beadlocks so I set about hot gluing some of that shot right inside the rims, being careful about clearing the portal cases. Those two easy mods took me maybe 30 minutes, didn't cost me a dime and made a very noticeable improvement, which I got to test out on my backyard course I just finished the first segment of today! What an awesome Saturday :) So here's a tip I can share with you on the Bronco for lighting. As you know, Traxxas doesn't have a light kit for these yet. However, Yeah racing makes some inexpensive strings that actually put out some useable light and they fit well where there are already snap-ins, like the tail and marker lights. For the headlights one just needs to do some careful drilling and use the supplied snap rings in the Yeah kit. I did headlights, tail lights and by drilling out the dummy plugs for the Traxxas rock light kit I was able to do some very useable rock lights. Two strings will run about $16. I added in a pair of retro looking cree smd led bumper lights that were about $20 bucks and they put out what looks to be close to 150 lumen and the entire mess is plenty bright for some night crawling. Wired all that up through an old servo board I converted to a light controller [google it, super easy to do] and now I have that on a spare channel. One word of caution. One needs to be totally comfortable with soldering and redoing the harnesses. They can be made to fit as-is but it's very messy. I hate messy wiring so I took the time to fit all of that clean and proper. The Yeah lights come with resistors pre-installed too and are safe up to 3S as-is. I found them very easy to work with. The spare channel thing leads me to what I did on the radio. The Traxxas radio is pretty decent but I just had to have it running on my Spektrum so in went an srs6k receiver. That's just me. Nothing wrong with the Traxxas radio. The entire locking diff thing was annoying me as it took up two channels and seemed gimmicky. All diffs locked or unlocked is good enough for me. I ended up relocating the servo for the rear diff so I could have room to reverse the horn and then y-cabled front and rear diffs together so I get full lock/unlock on one channel. After the fact I found someone makes a Y cable with electronic reversing for one servo, apparently an aircraft thing and about $8. So for anyone considering this hack you don't even need to relocate the rear servo. Sorry for the long comment. I just wanted to share seeing how you're talking about TRX4 mods. Thanks for the videos. They inspired me to do some stuff of my own.

Anytime, man! I've got more hacks and mods in store for this beast and will be starting an Axial project in the coming months. Hopefully I can share some useful stuff along the way :) Oh, and I meant to back you up on the battery thing. I usually run a good 2K mah 2s up in the front tray. Noticeably better weight distribution and it's good for a solid 45m - 1h of play time for sure. Been doing that since day 1. For perspective, last weekend I ran a 5200 2s that was just over 1/2 charged. I walked a long one around the neighborhood with my dogs and the truck crawling everything in sight [We have plenty of steep dirt and rocks here] and got almost 3 miles on that. I popped in a fresh 2K mah, went the last mile home on that and then popped that in my Losi mini and messed around for another 30 or so minutes and didn't kill that, cells were still at 3.6v each. Certainly far better than the nimhs and nicads I started out on so long ago! A strong 2K mah 2s is plenty for most sessions on these TRX4s for sure! Keep up the good work. You break it down well and thanks for investing the time and money in it too. I mean, you have a few trucks there but then what is the right number of RCs to own? N+1 ;-) Take care.

The #1 thing I recomend on a TRX-4: Upgrade AND relocation of stearing servo! Then add a Castle Creations BEC. I put a heavy duty Trackstar Evo brushless digital servo. (588oz where the stock Traxxas is around 200oz) I bought a brass front bumper mount with a mount place for servo. I used an aluminum 25t servo horn. Had to adjust linkage a bit and then change direction of servo. NOW: I have full range of the front suspension. Before, the linkage would prevent the right side from going all the way up. The left side went higher than the right. The space was aprox 3/4 inch. Not anymore! Both sides are equal. My stearing is better as well. I have been running like this for about a year now issue free! I think my cost was about $150. That included a custom made machined aluminum box for my Castle BEC. This box is waterproof & runs about $20 from Leading Edge Machinery (LEM). Other than that replace as much plastic as you can with brass down low. I removed the spare tire and rack to get weight down. I have a TRX-4 that amaze people who don't like Traxxas "because they are not real scale crawlers"????

I agree with you ! Better tires like Pitbull Rock Beast XOR, incredibly sticky, heavier Beadlocks wheels like Gmade affordable metal wheels SR03 Stronger Direction servo 277oz.inche (20Kg.cm), and to go with heavier torque, add an external BEC, 3 to 5 A (the internal BEC of 2A is not bad, but just limit...) The full Traxxas light kit: so great at night! So much fun to drive in the dark. Try it everybody Under chassis load (under frame!), this one is to come for me! I will definitively need it as I love too much the Defender body to change for a lighter one! Changing the body: yes if you want to change it into a competition crawler, but for scale crawling with scale obstacle imitating real life, no problem with the original Defender body. When we attack obstacle with more than 48 degrees climbing angle, it is fun but far from imitating a Defender in offroad situation!! LOL

Real steel beadlock wheels with stick on car wheel weights added to each wheel inside where the foam inserts go. Trim the foam to allow room for the weights. Doing this mod adds almost 3oz (85gr) to each wheel! Can't get weight any lower then adding it to the wheels themselves! This with some nice G8 compound tires and the truck can climb and go through almost anything.
@RCReviewChannel6 жыл бұрын
very, very good input. What's a good steel beadlock? They all seem so expensive.
@t.t.63986 жыл бұрын
RCReview here ya go! They say they're alloy wheels but they're heavy! Feel like steel to me. 108gr EACH! Look at this on eBay www.ebay.com/itm/222901577211 I have 2 sets of these with the Proline BF Goodrich G8 compound tires and like I said I added additional lead stick on automotive wheel weights to them inside where the foam would contact the wheel. I trimmed the foam, added the weights and now each wheel and tire weigh over 200gr each. Hope this helps you and all your viewers! 👍

I was just looking for a way to lighten that body this weekend and I ended up cutting off the spare mount, jerry can and hilift mounts off the back. Keeps the integrity of the frame and bumper AND it still looks great with the skeleton cage but really looks sleeker without the weight or extra length on there...happy.

What about shock springs? I've added some metal parts to my Defender, and the stock springs don't seem like they are up to the task. I converted my TRX4 Sport to a Defender, because I really like the scale look of the truck. Do you have a recommendation for some stiffer springs?

You won't be disappointed. The only problem I have with the Bronco is it's such a looker! I was almost hesitant to banging mine up but it's all good and scuffed up now ;-) Go check out his video on 5 best free mods for the Bronco. Good stuff to improve it right out of the box although it does pretty good as is. At the least, dial the shocks way down and use a small battery [2000mah 2s] in the front tray and you'll be good to go.

@Goatspammer6 жыл бұрын
Only upgrade and add brass weights if you replace the body with a lighter one. If you add weight to the axle portals with the original body your tires will collapse and will not hold the weight. Your kit will not withstand any lateral angles causing rollover.
