Just got an email saying that from 28 June First direct doesn’t charge any fees when spending abroad!!! This is good news for some people that trust only major banks (first direct is part of Hsbc). Ty

You also get a £500 daily ATM withdrawal limit, that combined with no fixed fees and Mastercard's FX rates is great! The only issue I have with them is their app, I think they're still miles behind the likes of Monzo & Starling in terms of app functionality and usability. Certainly a good choice though for anyone that's skeptical of challenger banks. Thanks for sharing. ^Jonny

Thanks for your advice,i have applied for a currensea card for travel abroad,my Lloyds debit card was charging me alot and most petrol stations abroad prefer cashless payment for petrol and electric charging.On a motorbike the charges mount up because i have to stop alot!
@MonitodotcomАй бұрын
Nice, I know you won't regret it, Currensea's basic plan has pretty decent exchange rates, just keep an eye on the ATM withdrawal limits. Can I ask out of curiosity, which bank are you layering the Currensea card on top of? ^Jonny

I am with LLOYDS BANK they seem to charge alot when I use my debit card abroad so I have to use cash when possible.I hope the currensea card will give me a better deal when paying for petrol etc.

Hi Jonny I am going to travel to Pakistan next month. I have a few questions 1- Which travel card would you recommend 2- Will that card work in any ATM machine which has mastercard or visa transactions? 3- Is there any fee for opening that account? Also do i need to pay some fee to send money from my main account to that account e.g Chase or Sterling? Thanks Usman
@Monitodotcom Жыл бұрын
As you're based in the UK I would look and going with Starling Bank. There is no fee for opening an account, you'll get up to £300 per day of fee-free ATM withdrawals and Mastercard's FX rates on transactions. You won't have to pay a fee to deposit GBP into the account, and you're probably better off just depositing as much as you think you'll need for the trip. Let me know if you have any further questions, and please consider using our affiliate link (bit.ly/3rfoFag) if you do decide to open a Starling account. ^Jonny

@Monitodotcom Жыл бұрын
Hey Martin, for sure - it's great for infrequent travellers, especially if you're not going to withdraw a lot of foreign cash, which you shouldn't need to in Iceland. You will be getting Mastercard's FX rates which are good, just remember when you go to pay for something, if you're prompted, always select to pay in the local currency. Let me know if you have any questions. ^Jonny

Hey! Both are going to be pretty much the same for what you're looking for, I think you may find the Starling Bank app easier to use as it has less features than Monzo. ^Jonny

Hi, i just want to clarify, isn’t the revolut card is now a debit card and not prepaid debit card, is it? I think they change some regulation once they got the banking license? And if so, what the difference between debit card and prepaid debit card?
@Monitodotcom Жыл бұрын
Referring to it as a prepaid card is really just a formality because Revolut isn't a licensed bank. But really, Revolut gives you a debit card, it is no different to what you get with a regular bank. IF you're based in the EEA then they are licensed as a bank, but in the UK they're not. ^Jonny

I'd recommend just getting a Revolut card. You can load it up with Turkish Lira, and you'll also get £1,000 of fee-free currency exchange which should cover a lot if not all of your spending in Turkey. The card and account are free and all you'll have to do is deposit pounds and exchange them for Lira. Just make sure to exchange during the week and you'll get fee-free currency exchange. If you use our link (bit.ly/43B1WTB) you can also get 3 months of Premium for free, which has unlimited fee-free currency exchange. Hope that helps, let me know if you have any further questions. ^Jonny

I'm going to suggest Chase UK. It's a simple account that's easy to setup, and if she isn't 18 yet then you could even set it up in your name and just give her access. The account uses Mastercard's FX rates which are more or less the real mid-market rate so she'll get a great exchange rate AND she can withdraw up to £1,500 internationally for free. I think that's your best shout. You just need to remind her to select to pay in the local currency when withdrawing money and paying for things at the card machine. That way she'll receive Chase UK's exchange rates. I have a Short explaining why this is important here: kzbin.infoZzsbJySF4Ww - It might be worth asking her to watch it. We also have an affiliate link for Chase (go.monito.com/chase-uk?lng=en) so if you do go for them please do consider using it to sign-up. Thank you Lee and let me know if you have any further questions. ^Jonny

OMG I just checked the conditions of the T&C of the interest account... can you clarify? if you use the interest account, you can only ever withdrw is "97%" ? WISE WILL keep 3%. its in the terms and conditions "1. If you add or receive money, we'll invest it in the fund we’ve chosen. 2. If you spend, or send, money we'll sell some of your investment. 3. You can only take out up to *97% of your Balance or Jar" So... in theory all the money you earned in the interest account, can be taken and wiped out by that 3% and then some? does this happen when you switch the account from 'Interest' to 'Cash?'
@Monitodotcom Жыл бұрын
Hey mate. I'm going to make a full video on WISE Interest soon so I'll go through the T&Cs in full detail. But yes you can access 97% of your money at any time and the other 3% will take roughly 2 days to access as they have to withdraw your money from the fund, basically changing it back to cash. I don't see your money being wiped out unless the valuation of your investment, fund or balance goes negative. I have my own money invested in WISE Interest as a means of testing it for a video and at some point I'll remove it and see what happens to my investment. ^Jonny

Hi, just to double check. Does Chase charge for foreign ATM withdrawals? If so, are there any debit cards that don’t?
@Monitodotcom Жыл бұрын
No Chase does not charge you for foreign ATM withdrawals, you get a maximum limit of £1500/month (foreign withdrawals) and they use Mastercard's FX rates to handle the currency exchange. Obviously some ATM's do charge you to withdraw money but Chase UK does not. ^Jonny
