as a G9 user i obviously agree. just wanted to add 2cents: in the 6k photo mode you can change the "rec method" to 6k burst (s/s) to press the shutter once to start and again to stop so you don't have to hold it. pair this "open gate" with the sirui anamorphics and you get 16:9 (4:3 x 1.33:1 =5.33:3)

Behnam Moghaddam I’m hearing good things about the S5, personally I’m a bit disappointed it didn’t get all-i shooting modes, it has a crop at 4K60, autofocus is still contrast-based and it has recording limits on some of the modes. Those are minor complaints in truth and I’m sure it’ll do great work, I like that it’s dual ISO and full frame, it’s just not something I’d rush for personally!

I upgraded to the G9 from the G85 about 6 months ago and MAN, what an awesome upgrade it has been. This camera is an absolute beast and so well rounded after the most recent firmware update. The autofocus is the best I’ve used on any MFT camera so far, but does leave something to be desired at times. I find that it is very reliable in ideal conditions though, which works for the majority of my needs! Bottom line: and absolute unit of a camera for the $, and competes and outperforms many cameras well above its price-point!

woo fantastic comparison! The speedbooster crop comparison with full frame boys crop is such an important point. Speedbooster + EF give us wider view than apsc crops and people forget this. Putting big boys to shame! G9 really is incredible. I recommend it to people when they ask what camera to get for video. Ibis is so so incredible and I feel like a wobbly toddler without it. 5:09 I have had my G9 since Jan/2018 which replaced my G7 purchased in 2015 when I seriously considered Sony A6000 but for the overheating issues. While recording stage performances in 30C temperature at a street festival with sun light hitting my G9, it did overheat after about 6 hours of video recording (I mean off and on over a period of 6 hours). That was the only time and was a good reminder to call it a day, before I overheat and pass out.

Thank you - that was very well done. I am planning on buying a G9 as a B Cam to go with my GH5s - NOTE: a lot of people make a big deal about the autofocus issue (which is a real consideration); however, I never have an issue or hunting problem: I use single point autofocus and focus into the middle of my focus plane, knowing what I am working with in terms of the f-stop, and the area I want to be in focus, I can move around in the focal plane on a gimbal and all is perfectly in focus. I can move in and out in the focal plane and all is perfect. Stylistically, I like having all in focus - so this technique works perfectly for those types of scenes. It would not work in certain situations if you want shallow depth of field, but if you plan your scene with your camera on a tripod or gimbal, you can still use the single point autofocus, even with some camera movement as long as you stay within the focal plane (i.e., triangulating the camera to the focal point, then moving along a path staying the same basic distance to the focal point). Doing this, focus is always perfect, and there is never any hunting.

Due to my budget I’m watching this in 2022, and it answered plenty of my questions. As a reasonably competent photographer but a beginning video maker, I could use a sentence here or there that explains why something is good, for example 10-bit recording or external HDMI. But easily one of the best reviews I’ve watched, thank you.
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! If it helps, 10 bit is good because it gives you more colour information in post, so the colours will take more manipulation before ‘breaking’ and you might notice colours blend smoother together on faces if you look closely. HDMI out is for using external monitors or recorders, handy if you’re using a gimbal and can’t see the monitor, or if you want something easier to see :)

Great video clip. I use Panasonic/Lumix and Olympus M4/3rds. Yes the light can be an issue with M4/3rds but there are some superb LED lights now available particularly for outdoor situations. As for the auto/manual focus - well for a relatively low cost look at the Samyang Cine Lens range which are of course all manual but have the geared cog wheel on the lens. Myles: a truly excellent video, if I may say; and lovely AND useful graphics, and subtle music (you should get an award for this aspect alone!). And as a video and stills shooter, I agree completely with your conclusions: the G9 punches significantly above its weight. I bought a G85 recently to complement my three GX85 bodies (our studio cameras) but the G85 is not weather-sealed and for that reason alone I may have to pick one up (I live on a boat, on salt water). Thanks so much for posting this.

@@ShotByMyles I did not know the G85 is weather sealed; I will bring it back on board immediately! I'm still interested in the G9, though, for the many reasons you detail. I have a question: I just looked at your colour grading course on Udemy, but as an ex-network director myself, and ex-commercial photographer, I would much rather get images and footage right in camera. I try to spend as little time as possible behind the computer! I do use FCPX, though, if that is the best way. My question is this: do you have a course that I can buy that talks about getting the best images/footage straight out of the camera? Or is the colour grading course still the best way? Another reason I am keen in getting the look right SOOC is that we feed the HDMI from the three studio GX85s into a BMD Television HD switcher and out live to disk for all our programs. I have made a number of tweaks to the "Portrait" mode in-camera, and people like our videos' 'look', but I know so much more is possible. Anyhow, opening the dialogue here.
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 3 жыл бұрын
Kit Laughlin thanks Kit, the course covers colour correction too, and I think even if you aren’t trying to stylise your footage, it’s important to be able to analyse what’s going on, what might be wrong and how to correct things to make them look natural. That said, if you pick a profile you like and you nail the white balance and exposure in camera, you shouldn’t have much to do if you are looking for a natural look (although it’s difficult to nail everything all the time!) I explore getting a look in camera a little in this video if you’d like to check it out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZSoZIWtjrZraNU

Yes, totally agree. Like all cameras it has its strengths and weaknesses, but the G9 is good at so much and other than the AF in video which could be better (although it's not terrible) it is perfect for my uses. The ergonomics is second to none and the usability, customisation, menu system is superb. When you take into consideration the price, it's a no brainer as best value camera. Of course it won't be the perfect camera for certain users with specific needs, but for me it's ideal. 🙂

Awesome comparison. Was thinking about the G5 but I like the price of the G9! If I buy just the G9 body, what lens would you suggest, primarily for real estate shoots. Thank you!
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers! In real estate here it’s all about making the spaces look as big as possible, so in my case I wanted a really wide lens to achieve that and went for the Laowa 7.5mm f2. It’s a manual lens so you have an aperture ring on the body and no autofocus, but because it’s SO wide you can stop down to f2.8 and get almost everything in focus just by leaving it near infinity. Outside of real estate I liked the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 with speed booster for a really fast, versatile lens. Only issue is it’s big and heavy and AF is basically non-existent!

Very good video, concise and to the point. Now, another 3 years later, I would like to jump on the G9 wagon. I am a hybrid shooter. Thank you! The G9 AF is not good, honestly! I don’t have any experience if the EM1 I’m afraid, I’d look in to that or hire it before deciding to buy, but iirc it’s from the same era as the GH5 / G9 and has similar tech, so I’d be sceptical about its AF. All the best!

great review, just subbed! the speed booster you linked doesn’t seem to be available anymore, do you have any recs for a replacement? also, what’s the value of the Sigma lens+speed booster vs spending more on a native MFT lens? thanks!
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Prashant, I've just updated the US and UK links for the speed booster, otherwise if you can't get it on Amazon this is the Metabones Ultra for EF to Micro Four Thirds. This in my opinion is the best, there are cheaper alternatives but in my experience I've seen a lot more quality / build issues with those. The value of going this route with the Sigma lens I use is that you end up with a zoom lens that gets you f1.3 for light gathering purposes. That's insane for a zoom which is why so many GH5 users have gone this route, Panasonic do now sell a 10-25mm f1.7 which is a similar focal length to what you end up with on the Sigma, but it's extremely expensive and that's obviously still not quite as good in low light and won't give you the same amount of bokeh / shallow depth of field for that blurry background look that's notoriously harder to pull off on these cameras. That Panasonic lens might offer different benefits such as better AF, but even then that AF won't be reliable for pro use and at least the Sigma can be used on other cameras for people that 'upgrade' from the GH5 to something like the Pocket 6K or a Canon C200 / C70. All the best!

Great video. I am torn now in 2022. Canon has announced the r10 which on paper still does not have all the specs of this camera but the tech is 4 years newer. I am torn between the r10 and the G9. Any insight would be helpful
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 2 жыл бұрын
It's a real tough one! The R10 has two large compromises IMO: the 4K 60P is cropped which will be annoying when jumping between 24 and 60P because the field of view will change on the same lens, and the cropped footage won't look great. Secondly it has no headphone jack, which means if you are recording audio for an interview or something, you won't be able to monitor to make sure there are no audio issues. For me that's a deal breaker on the R10 but everyone's different! I think the G9 vs the R7 would be a tougher call for video. I'd guess the G9 quality would still be better especially at 4K 60P but the Canon's will probably hold an advantage in low light. Good luck!

@@wedopowersports I'm in a similar boat, I now shoot on the Canon R6 and C70, but I actually preferred the experience of shooting video on the G9 compared to the R6. For some reason I can't have both zebras and focus peaking on at the same time on the R6... getting exposure right is also a challenge, I miss the waveform but I do think the G9 only gives you the waveform if you get the V-Log upgrade (it's there by default on the GH5 iirc) The R6 overheats in 4K too which is a real shame, I'm yet to hear anything about that on the R10 but with it being a smaller sensor there's a good chance it won't overheat. Never even heard of overheating on the Pansonics! Because I started on the GH5 before I got the G9 I didn't really use that top display very much! Good luck :)

Great and well-reasoned presentation, Miles. No fight here. I've seriously considered getting the G9---very impressive, and one of the best value for money cameras anywhere. I've seen some wonderful video footage on the G9. I recently ordered the S5. I think it's your GH6 if you ask me. For hand held shooting it looks wonderful---and its small form won't wear you out like the weighty S1H. (I speak from experience)/ The AF on the S5 looks far better than previous cameras, and I wonder if Panasonic can/will include these improvements in the GH5/G9?? They will engineer it into the S1H and S1. Still seriously considering the G9 and going all in on Panasonic. The reviewer on Park Cameras did a back to back review of the A7SIII and S5. The skin tones and look on the model (lovely girl) confirmed to me I'd made the right decision by picking the S5. Your presentations are excellent. I hope you get a million subscribers! William Ridenour yes I know what you mean about the skin tones- I made a LUT for cine-D and v-log to try and make the colours more accurate, they’re made for the GH5 but they’re free if you look through my older videos. Otherwise it’s a manual correction in post for me!
@avarmadillo
@avarmadillo 3 жыл бұрын
@@ShotByMyles I remember that LUT. I'll have to download it and see how it works. At the time I saw it I didn't have a Panasonic. How do you recommend exposing Cine-D to get the best out of the LUT with the least muss and fuss? Funny, when I white balance V log (on the S1H), expose it as Panasonic recommends (middle gray at 42%), and drop in the "Nicest" LUT, BOOM!!--you're almost done. Skin tones really look terrific in Nicest. I think one of the wonderful things about the S5 (besides it NOT requiring a fork lift to shoot hand held) is that it opens up the ability to use the Varicam LUTs. Nicest is about the best LUT for skin tones you can find, IMO, and the LUTs are all set perfectly to expose as Panasonic recommends. But several of the other standard profiles besides Cine-D require the extra step in grading. I've been able to improve things by adjusting the tint to reduce the yellow/green. It's pretty bad in the S1H standard profiles. I'll be interested to see if any improvement will be made with the S5. The yellow vector is crazy over balanced, and I don't know why! Color Finale with its vectors saves the day for me. That's such a great plugin! If it were three times the price it would still be a bargain. By the way, I really appreciate that your videos are straightforward and honest to who you are. So many people try to do something "hip" (and phony) to attract subscribers. What a terrible mistake. It's always so obvious. You're either naturally zany (like Potato Jet) or you're not. Just be who you are is, IMO, the best advice for you tubers. What eventually gets the viewers is great content, delivered concisely, and you have it for GH5 users. Of course, you can go too far---like Gerald Undone...who delivers information way too fast if you ask me---but the content is great. Final question: do you think the G9 is any better than the GH5 in respect to noise in lower light?

That’s a tough question and one that will depend on who you’re asking and what work you do. For me they are not crucial- I know professionals including me that shoot video for a living without those profiles. Some people will say they can see the difference and wouldn’t accept any less. 150mbps is enough for some grading for sure. You can see how far Daniel Schiffer and the like grade their 8 bit Sony footage which maxes out at 100mbps, so it can be graded for sure, it’s just a case of all-i behaving a little better the further you push. If you find a video that can demonstrate that well then you’ll be lucky- I haven’t seen anyone successfully sell me on the 10 bit advantage yet on a realistic grade. @ShotByMyles

I would check out some of the Olympus zooms that have the focus clutch mechanism. They behave more mechanical than regular focus by wire lenses, but I’m not familiar with them enough to advise which they are. For versatility you probably want a zoom, although primes are generally faster making them better for low light and for getting a shallow depth of field.

As the owner of: GF1, GH5, GM1, GX9, GM5 in chronological order (and still have all), I'm considering adding another beast, the G9 tomorrow, and appreciate your honest summary of how it fits into the landscape. The things that attract me most are 6.5 stop IBIS and 80MP stills, but also having another power house camera that I can keep a different lens on relative to the GH5 is a good thing. Hi, what about lover light and bokeh?
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you class as low light... if your standards are older cameras then this does fine. I use it happily up to ISO 1600, up to 3200 at a push if I can de-noise in post, which is quite a lot of light if using a f1.2 lens at 1/50 shutter (i.e. no slow motion). If you’re regularly shooting in the dark or need exceptional performance then the Sony line are undoubtedly cleaner! Likewise the GH5S is also a low light beast due to its dual ISO. For bokeh I think it’s ok, as shown in the video my f1.3 Metabones / Sigma setup looks marginally better for bokeh (i.e. shallower depth of field) than a f1.8 on full frame. That means you need to get some fast glass on full frame to beat that, but of course that is an option for people that really want it. I’ve never been asked by a client for more bokeh put it that way, and if I’m focusing manually I don’t often want a super shallow depth of field. But if you need ultra shallow depth of field then full frame with fast glass is going to give you more!

I think the G9’is still a good option, yes! Although now that the GH5 has a successor, I imagine that might be priced even more competitively and might not be far off the G9? It also depends what you’ll be doing, if you’re only shooting the occupational casual video then the recording limit wouldn’t be an issue, but if you’re looking to explore videography and maybe events / weddings, the unlimited recording times of the GH series becomes key. I do still think the image quality of the G9 holds up but I haven’t recently checked prices vs Sony or Canon equivalents (I’d only really consider the R7 as a G9-level rival from them) Good luck!

Personally, I think it's a good upgrade. Again it is a case of diminishing returns when you start spending more, and there's no doubt the G80 offers good quality, but for me there's a decent jump to G9. You get the 4K50P, slow motion up to 180P, better codecs (even before you add in 10 bit), great ex tele mode and better useability thanks to more customisation and function buttons. Obviously I can't speak for your budget or intended use, but personally I don't touch my G80 now that I have a G9 to back up my GH5 and as I do make my living from video it's definitely been a worthy upgrade for me. Thanks for watching and the kind words!

@@ShotByMyles Great thanks for the info. I think the slow mo is noticeably limited on the G80 and would make a big diff for b-roll-esque stuff. I use the Cine D video style for grading etc in DaVinci currently but a flatter starting point (I believe V Log is available as a paid upgrade?) would feel better..Currently just on the 12-60mm kit lens and the 100-300mm with no prime lenses but looking at your footage seems a no brainer to at least get the 25mm 1.7(think that's right). Keeping the lens collection and staying MFT seems such a good direction and backs up a decision to go G9, as well as a 4MP uplift from the G80. I guess the only other thought would be is it at all possible a GH6 could come out with a drastic change to autofocus technology! Thanks again and best of luck with the channel/projects.
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 3 жыл бұрын
Aitchos that is correct, you can upgrade the G9 with the v-log code. I’d recommend experimenting with HLG first though as that’s got very similar dynamic range to v-log and it’s included on the G9 already! The 25mm f1.7 is great value, but as autofocus is not the best then you can always adapt lenses that might also be compatible for a future move. For example if you knew you were eventually going to an APSC / Super 35 camera with an EF amount, the Sigma 18-35 route makes a lot of sense now. But the 25mm f1.7 was so cheap I went for it, it’s mainly the expensive MFT lenses I don’t want to buy in case I leave the system. Thanks and all the best!

If you only want to shoot manual I’m sure it will be a beast! I think it has to be better than the A7iii in terms of video quality, that one has some colour issues with the magenta noise pattern throughout. I got the Canon R6 but the dynamic range isn’t great and the quality in slow motion isn’t great. It also annoys me by not being able to have zebras on at the same time as peaking, and there is no waveform. The S5 will probably be better in many ways other than AF!

Dunno. When it come to practical shooting of movies I still reckon my GH4 does it better than my G9. For hand-held and short clips, nothing much will touch the G9 but when set up for movie video the GH4 (nevermind the GH5-series). For a start angle-ISO shooting and a much larger buffer - when burst shooting the G9 will grind to a halt, the GH4 will keep going until the card is full. The stabilisation on the G9 is superb, where it hits it for 6 is wildlife at long range whether stills or short video clips If you consider your intended audience, many will be viewing on a mobile phone, and then C4K becomes a waste of milk. If you are shooting movies for the big screen professionally then you will want a GH5 anyway, along with a lot of other toys.

Thanks for your input Jeff! I personally found the GH4 extremely noisy in my brief time with it, I suspect the G9 generation is actually a step up but I defer to your experience. G9 does miss out on some video features, such as no waveform by default, I give you that! Shutter angle is nice for switching between frame rates and not needing to set shutter, but I work around that with custom profiles. Thanks for adding your voice!

@@ShotByMyles I personally find the GH4 exceptionally quiet when set up right. Part of it is the entire camera body is designed as a heat sink. The NR can be too aggressive and introduce artefacts. There are several places where the NR can be fiddled with. I have had to shoot movie in poor light, coloured stage lighting is the worst for colour balance, Auto-WB will not cope with changing colours and varying lights. Every situation is different, you have to play with the camera, any camera, to get best results. It is hard to beat the G9 for stills but the GH4 produces movies that are stable from beginning to end. Neither the G9 nor the E-M5ii does that. I had to buy a G7 as B-Cam because the E-M5ii would not do the job. A tip here, if you put your thumb on the back of the sensor under the monitor and it is hot, the camera will not shoot movies. What surprised me recently though is the new to me PEN-F can produced still photo images every bit as good as the G9.

Tried to love the G9 just as much, but sold it after a year of use. The JPEG quality is terrible, always a green or purple hue. Then MFT is always a struggle in low light situations. Well... I've used recent Sony (A7R3), Canon (5DSr), and Olympus (EM1mk2) menus and find the Lumix is easiest to use. But everyone is entitled to react differently. Agree about jpeg hues, but then I shoot stills in RAW so it's no big deal, to me. In low light the better IBIS, combined with lens stabilisation in some cases, allows confident stills shooting at one second. Obviously video doesn't benefit, but in ordinary lighting the stabilisation means gymbals are not necessary, so less weight to carry.
