Nice, this is a great method you use. I've been using variations of this technique for years while warming up. Builds good dexterity and accuracy too.

Great warm up exercise - thank you. The most challenging part (for me) of the exercise is to memorize the order of the permutations: it was not straightforward to see the rule behind it immediately (you call it "logic" - but there are various possibilities how to order the 24 permutations "logically") - finally I got it 🙂

some guy mentioned this same warmup, in highschool it kept him thinking all the time coming up with new patterns in that 4 finger structure and he posted all of them which were about 16...so i'm definitely getting better but still struggling getting the short pinky there.

Jared, great lesson. Can you discuss the type of arm injury you had from playing the guitar too much. I am suffering from Ulnar Nerve Entrapment which is causing numbness in left forearm. Seeking information on cause and treatment. Also, how to avoid it in the future. If you or any of your subscribers have any information, I would appreciate it. It will help me and many others. Thanks.

@@trevorcains Yep, you can also alternate thumb and first finger or thumb and middle finger to pluck with the right hand. I do all of them.

Hi, thanks for all the tips and lessons, I'm going to start using this, for how long do you usually do this exercise? I want to start practicing more but I would like to build a routine so I stay focused on what I'm doing
@soundguitar2 жыл бұрын
Good question! How long I do it is about the length of the demonstration section, x2 because I often go over it again with slurs, but that's it, just takes a few minutes after getting it down, BUT getting it down and learning it in the first place of course takes some time and work.

Thank you, Jared - do you recommend an equivalent for keyboard or piano or do you happen to know a teacher like you for keyboard | piano? - Zach
@soundguitar2 жыл бұрын
Good question. For keyboard/piano I’d go for the Hanon exercise series. Even just the first exercise in that series is great.
@stringbender572 жыл бұрын
Very good warm up exercises. I have done something quite similar for 30 years. I'll give your patterns a try. I noticed when you play the notes from the 1st to the 6th string you pick down up and even when changing to the next string up instead of sweep picking following the direction of the stroke, you pick down on the new string. That was the way I did it for 40 years until somebody suggested sweeping up to the next string for speed. Now I am stuck and somewhat sloppy either way between the two...lol! What are your thoughts on this?
@soundguitar2 жыл бұрын
Good Question! Yes, I stick with strict alternate picking as my default and I think that's a good habit to have, if/when I want to work out playing something with particular speed I'll definitely use the economy picking style you're talking about case by case.

Hey I came across the video in my email I guess I’m on some list or something in it you mentioned your devastating injuries. I’m like 5 months into RSI recovery, I feel like I’m almost back but i know my hand isn’t perfect (fretting). Any tips? I know I’ll probably play again but this has really sucked, it’s basically tendinitis from overuse and bad form, pretty much all the “pain” is gone but I can just tell it’s not all the way better so I don’t wanna start playing again, I’m pretty close to the recovery timeline, how do you know when you’ve healed?
@andreshammer88972 жыл бұрын
You'll play again. Soon I bet. Take it slow, and be religious about your form and rsi prevention, should be at the forefront of your mind equal to whatever you're working on musically.. don't get back into old habits.. sounds like you already know how far recovered you are.. trust your instincts, just be patient and wait until you're ready.. 🍻
@soundguitar2 жыл бұрын
Hi Alx. I'm sorry to hear about your RSI. Having gone through it twice, I know how it feels! And it takes long time to recover. I'm glad to hear that you're almost back. For me, I never stopped playing completely, because I still had music obligations I had to fulfill for my job. But I did the bare minimum for quite a while. I think this made my healing slower, but by the time I got to the stage you're at, I think it actually helped my recovery - I think my very careful, very slow, very light playing, while religiously doing this exact warm up with as little pressure as I possibly could - I think that served as physical therapy in a way and conditioned my arm to have the tolerance to play again. I now can play all day as much as I want if I feel like it and at the time I thought that would never be possible again, so keep your head high because full recovery is possible. Watch this video, kzbin.info/www/bejne/haDFl6tpjryAnc0. It's a guest post from a friend of mine who's a PT. She drops some great advice, one of them being to start playing small amounts, whatever amount you safely can, as soon as you can so your body isn't shocked when you start playing a bunch again suddenly. I think that was the key for me. In the end it was a blessing in disguise because now my technique is extremely light. I learned how to only use the pressure I actually need while playing and it's a huge advantage now. Hope that helps! Let me know how it goes. - ** Jared

I feel really thick! I cannot figure how this is logical at all… the first few are exactly the reverse of the first order eg 1 2 3 4 followed by 4 3 2 1 but when it gets to the 6 th fret he says it’s the reverse coming down but it changes order eg 1 4 2 3 followed by 4 1 3 2 rather than 3 2 4 1! I can’t remember the exercise because I can’t get to grips with how this is a logical order. Feel really stupid 😂
@soundguitar Жыл бұрын
Sorry for the confusion! Think of it as a mirror image flip instead of "Reverse". If you did the same order, but going the other direction you get the descending finger orders. And you can create your own way of organizing the finger permutations, as long as we play all of them in whatever order then it's equally beneficial.
@Freidlon7 Жыл бұрын
@@soundguitar thanks for the reply. I just can’t get the order into my head once I reach the 6th fret. Feeling a bit dumb! Great exercise.. I’ve doing a simplified version of this for a while now but this is where I need to take it next so appreciate it. Love the channel, great ideas, concepts and insights about practice and technique and playing in general. Will stick with it till the penny drops…. Eventually
