I love your blend of anecdotal and scientific. This really crystallized a lot of what I’ve looked into as well! Hope everyone hits their music goals in 2025 🎉

To the person who made the comment about him talking too much and not playing.. I gained more insight and practical practicing concepts in the 20 minutes of talking than any demonstration videos i watch

Just found this; loved the episode. One thing to share about speed: At the beginning of the year, I went though a phase were I was really concerned about my speed. I was working on 8th note based 2-5-1 lines, and since I had previously focused on comping, my solo lines were really slow - my max comfortable tempo was around 100 bpm. So I spent a month researching, designing, and implementing a practice system to fix this. I used speed bursts, and setting the metronome to play on 2 and 4, then just on 3. At the end of the month I was up to a max speed of 160 bpm, and comfortable at 120. The point is this - once I knew I had a system that worked, described in my practice journal, I knew I could work lines up to speed whenever I needed to, so I stopped worrying about and chasing speed, went back to 100-120, and put my focus on good phrasing and articulation (hammer ons, pull off, slides) which, for me is way more important. It’s all about the system. Cheers and thanks for what you do!

Putting my guitar out on a stand so I see it helps me to want to pick it up and practice. Usually I'm practicing for awhile too. Love your teaching technique. And lessons. I read a book by Cal Newport about Deep Focus called Deep Work. It help with concentrating on my practice. Just focusing intensely. Without distractions like phones etc... Thank you for your great videos and lessons

Hi Jared, I am a guitar player who is obsessed with practicing the instrument and equally obsessed with wanting to play complicated, fast, metal guitar lines. I practice almost everyday for many hours and for the past year I have devoted a lot of my practice time to sitting down honestly with a metronome and a DAW, and practicing. I have made awesome strides but in the last couple weeks I have become somewhat frustrated with this technique i've been working on (Sweep picking), Lately when recording myself in a DAW, I see that my timing has somehow gotten worse....I feel that it was at least better before.... Should I be switching up completely to working on a different technique if Im frustrated? I am assuming that this frustration is what has let me develop mistakes in my muscle memory as I worked up the arpeggios gradually to speed. But there is an argument out there that says, it would actually be best to stick with it through the frustration in order to make progress. Thanks for this video!
