Good review, a year with constant use is a good yardstick. This is the first non manufacturer review Ive seen on these. Price here in Australia is closer to $400. Worth it if you are remote with very average water quality available. If it stops dodgy water caused explosive bowel movements just once it pays for itself.

$400 is a lot, but it might be worth it. Remeber the 3 year expiration after first use. Now that we are back in the "house life" for now I'm still using it in our home to filter water since it will go bad over time and we have about another year on the filter, so why not use it to it's full potential.

Mostly a backup system, I try to have redundancies whenever possible; ... especially when fairly little extra space is utilized.

That's a good idea Ron. Our strategy has been to make sure we were somewhere with an easy water source whenever we change out the carbon. Then we can lett the first couple litters go in the ground or maybe fill Jaggers bowl and then refill the Jerry can before headding away from our water source.

Thanks for the video Idea. I suspect it will be a while before we get to the topic, so I will do my best to meet your request here. The water cans held up well. They are made of thick plastic and we will likely continue to use them with out any foreseeable issue. The downside to these water cans is that they do not seal completely. When stored in an upright position we had no leaks, even on rough roads, but in any other orientation they would leak from the caps when full. If you found the right sized O-ring for the caps you could probably solve this problem, but my one attempt at it proved not to fit as well as hoped. As far as finding water sources, we filled our water jugs at any business that we patronage. We filled our cans at grocery stores (as seen in the video) gas stations, parks, public wells, rivers, banks, coffee shops, hotels, and restaurants. Latin America was very lax about this. When we got back to the USA and tried to fill our water jugs at a tap on the side of a gas station (after just spending $55 for gas) the manager came rushing out saying that he saw us on the security cameras and demanded to know what we were doing. Our response, "filling a water jug. What's wrong?". We were confused by his alarm. He was pretty upset with us. So, maybe this doesn't work as well if your traveling through the USA.

Lifesaver makes a 20,000 and a 10,000 UF filter. We have the 20000, but if your solo the 10,000 would probably be the more cost effective option. The charcoal filters do need to be changed more often. (every 2500 liters)

So helpful. I will be doing central and south america in a 4runner. I was considering a whole tank and pump system but it seemed so daunting, costly, and prone to breakages. Would you have liked to have a big tank instead of using the 2 other jerrys? I'm thinking of putting a tank in the spare tire area and keeping the lifesaver Jerry on the rear bumper holder. Just gravity drain from the tank to to Jerry on the ground. Thoughts? Thanks!

That sounds like a good idea. I'm considering a similar system for my next build. One thing to consider is how you will fill the large tank. Jerrycans are nice since you can carry them to the water source. A longer garden hose and easy access to fill your tank would solve this problem most of the time, but maybe one normal jerrycan to transfer water would be a good idea as well.

You could install a 20L or 40L tank, then fill them using water jugs available at any store everywhere. You may have to pay a deposit for the jug, but you'd immediately return the empty jug to the store to get back your deposit.

Where I live in Mexico, water costs about 25 cents per gallon for a 20 liter jug. A big problem when traveling is that you will need to make a several dollar deposit for the bottle, and the next water supplier down the road will not take it in exchange.

We don't really clean it. If we have a good water source I will spray around inside of the container and at the filter then dump it out before refilling it, particularly if we recently had a salty water source. If you were using water with mud or leaves or something in it then you would want to clean that debris out when you had the chance so that you don't prematurely clog the filter. You can unscrew the tap fitting from the jug and the filter can then be pulled out for a more thorough inspection/cleaning. This will also give you another access point if you wanted to use a bottle brush to scrub the inside of the jug.

Hi there if you want to just freshen a jug just use about a table spoon of baking soda swish it around real good rinse one time and your good for long term storage use about 1- 2 drops of bleach for 5 gallon of water swish around for a minute let it sit for 10-15 minutes empty and rinse till no smell store with cap off so it will dry

I have not. I've never owned another jerry can with 2 threaded openings like this. you need one hole for the pump/fill and one for the filter/tap.

It will reduce smells, but won't remove all impurities. You can clean it by removing the filter and wiping it off and carefully pouring water into it so it flows in revers. We never did this so many speak to its easy or effectiveness. It's something you would potentially do if you tried to filter mud water, but we never did that. There is no good way of knowing when the filter needs to be changed in my opinion. I recently reached out to lifesaver about this and if you didn't keep track of how many liters of water you filtered with the unit, then your stuck guessing or if the water flow is noticeably slower then it used to be that is a sign it needs to be changed.

When you get water from a pond or stream, do you first pour the water through a cloth - such as a T-shirt - in order to get the bigger particles out of the water ... before putting that pond water into the Jerry Can? I've watched several Jerry Can videos and I haven't seen this potential issue addressed whatsoever.

We never did that, but we also never filled it with water that had a visibly high sediment content. We waited out into lakes to get to clear looking water or filled it from clear running streams. Pre-filtering would be a good idea if your only source of water is visibly dirty/not clear. The filter can also be removed and cleaned of large sediment, but we never felt the need to do this, so I can't comment form personal experience. checkout iconlifesaver.com for more info on that.

@@Onward4x4 surprisingly well. (I tend to break things) In the video we talked about the issue we had with the tap... that has happened twice now. I talked to the company about it, but they said it is an unusual issue and they don't have any plans to change the design. They still sent me another replacement tap for free. The jerrycan has held up very well considering we drag it in and out of the truck bed every time we use it so that it hangs off the edge of the tailgate to fill our water bottles. And we are still using the original water filter element with no issues👍

I just received mine in the mail, is it normal for there to be a bunch of tiny bubbles after pouring the water into a glass? Air bubbles must be coming from somewhere, would this indicate a leak of some sort? Thanks!

Our water isn't bubbly. I'm not sure what would cause that. If there was a leak then air or water would be leaking out of the jerry can since the system is pressurized.

Very good review. I bought one of these back in 2013, before the company went bankrupt and was taken over by the current company. No where in my instruction book does it say that the filter is only good for 3 years if not used and one year after using. My instruction book says it is good to use until the safety cutout in the filter prevents water from coming out, then you should replace the filter cartridge. The Life saver bottle has a shelf life for the filter it uses I almost bought one back in 2013 also, but I didn't like the filter expiration date for it just being stored and not used so I went with the Jerry Can. But I do not think the Jerry can cartridge has a 3 year shelf life, I know the new company says it does but I think they are just saying that to sell cartridges.

interesting. We obviously haven't tested this ourselves and just shared the company's statement. The 3 year shelf life starts from when you open it. I don't think it has a shelf life when still in its vacuum sealed packaging. I suspect we'll continue to use it until it stops working too.

It being changed to white so there's very little heat transfer...slowly due to already made blue containers. I'm sure water in white container is much cooler than water sitting in the sun 8n dark blue containers.

It's the same technology as they use in some of their backpacking filters, just jumbo sized, so I think it would work fine. We've used water from wells and streams with visible debris, but I wouldn't call any of it silty or muddy, so I can't speak from first hand experience on that. I know you can clean the filter element. We never did, but you may have to if the water has a lot of silt in it.

What is the shelf-life of the unused carbon filters? Do you keep a spare main filter? Any other O-rings, etc?

Sorry Mike, I don't know the shelf life on the carbon filters. We didn't cary a spare main filter since we were only traveling for 2 years and we were confident we wouldn't need a replacement in that amount of time. If you anticipate using muddy water or are going to be providing water for a larger group of people you may want to carry a spare. Consider carrying a spare for the small rubber valve on the end of the pump since you will likely need to remove and clean that occasionally. We never needed our spare, but there is a chance of loosing or taring it when removing it. Spare o rings would be small, easy to pack so not a bad idea, but we never needed any.

@@TheTravelingTogetherJournal enjoyed your video. No, I'm stationary but always thinking. ......... You can look up McMaster-Carr,, filter bags for water, 8 or 16 inch long, cut a hole in raw bucket lid, first filter/strain your water through the bag. Bags come in 1 to 100 micron ..... $4.

We don't. Keeping track would be the prudent thing to do, but I guess we aren't worried enough to make the effort. If the filter gets clogged the water flow will diminish.

If your in sunny hot area..that water is going to be so hot in that blue container. Why not make it white to keep it cooler ?

I can't tell you how they chose the colors for the jugs. Their yellow ones that the company donates to relief aid and charity efforts look too much like diesel fuel cans in my opinion. What I can tell you is that we were in some hot places and never had any issue with the water getting hot. Although, with out thinking about it, I guess we didn't regularly leave it out in direct sun light either. If it is a concern for you and the way your rig is set up, I suppose it would be pretty easy to make it a little cover out of reflectix or something like that.

Blue is the global standard colour for containers of potable water. Red is four-stroke petrol (gasolene), yellow is diesel, green is two-stroke petrol. I don't think colour makes that much difference to temperature really.

Black will get more heat, that's why the hanging showers are black.
