In this video the surgeons discuss the top 5 ways to know if you have torn your meniscus. Ultimately, a history, physical exam, and an MRI will confirm the diagnosis. Remember, an X-Ray is usually done before the MRI to rule out any bone problems.

As usual the talking docs are spot on. I tore my medial meniscus running one of my dogs in agility. Lots of pivoting with sharp turns etc. It hurt and the show must go on. I didn’t run my dog in the remaining runs, my friend did who had broke her leg a few yrs prior by getting hit by a Ewe. She was healed up and stepped in for me. Mine was diagnosed by physical exam, history and MRI.

This was informative! My dad’s knee suddenly started hurting. He got an X-ray but the docs didn’t see anything. They said he will need an MRI to make sure. But until then, the doc recommended he go to PT to see if it get’s better. He has no history of trauma and was outside often gardening and jumping rope occasionally. Thanks for the video, it was really entertaining as well. I’ll look more into this!

First off thank you guys so much for taking the time to produce and post this content. It's very educational and extremely appreciated. I had a trip/fall incident at work which resulted in a torn Meniscus. I went to a Walk-in clinic as my family Dr was not immediately available. The Dr at the clinic told me there was absolutely no way that my Meniscus was torn because it wasn't swollen enough, (even though I had every other symptom). Followed up with my family Dr two weeks later, went for Xray, Ultrasound and MRI. Only the MRI showed it, but it was in fact torn. Accidentally twisted my leg a week later and wound up tearing it right through. Had it scoped and ot has been great for roughly 11 years except on the occasions where I over do it. Fast forward to 2020. I was off work for an unrelated matter but decided to get my (right) knee properly looked at and diagnosed after more than 20 years of knee pain, stiffness and other issues. This time the Xray was clear but the Ultrasound showed a tear, and a Ligament strain. The MRI confirmed two Meniscal tears front and back. And the Ligament strain. Went to the surgeon expecting to get it scoped as I did on the left one previously and was quite surprised when he said he thought a scope was a waste of time. He recommended TKR which I had 5 weeks ago. Lots of pain at first and unfortunately I hadn't seen your video on the top 5 mistakes people make after TKA. I didn't keep ahead of the pain and even tried not using pain meds after the fourth or fifth day (what a stupid thing to do). Anyway, I'm doing ok now physio seems a bit slower than I expected, but that could just be me. At the first follow up when I had my staples removed the surgeon was happy and told me I was a little above average. I have my second follow up later this week. It still feels pretty weak, and still plenty of stiffness, but it's coming along. That's enough babbling for now. Thank you both again for your efforts to provide this very helpful info.

Good description of the torn meniscus. But a nice model or diagram might help. I have had a torn meniscus (inside right knee). I did have significant trauma in a skiing accident but that was 20 years ago, I think getting old can expose weaknesses. This episode seemed to happen when changing direction suddenly while walking along. Managed to treat it myself with 5 weeks of rest, keeping the leg semi straight and hopping around on the other leg. Also some Ibuprofen gel, particularly overnight. I then did gentle exercises daily to flex the knee. I just have to be careful now not to suddenly twist my knee or change direction. I don't do sports, only walking and now some cycling which a doctor said might help strengthen the knee.

I love your videos! I am thrilled to have found your channel!! This is my situation: The docs are pretty sure I have a torn lateral meniscus. I don't recall a specific trauma however I have been doing a lot of packing items and moving boxes at my late mother's house getting things ready for the Estate Sale. At my age, I just say the warranty has run out and these things are bound to start happening! I have lots of pain, my knee locks up, I have sharp pain if I move wrong, I can't fully extend my leg and I have to be very careful walking. The x-ray shows "Moderate to advanced tricompartmental degenerative changes with narrowing of all three compartments, greatest involving the medial compartment". I have an interstim implant so I can't have an MRI unless I have surgery to have it removed. I'm scheduled to see the orthopod this week. Will a CT scan give her enough information to make a decision regarding repairing the tear? Regarding knee replacement? The last time I saw her a few years ago we discussed knee and hip replacements being in my future due to damaged done from two significant car accidents, a head-on, and a rollover. We have films to compare. Thanks!

I have a long history of activities that I think has caused a meniscus tear. When I was younger I played volleyball, basketball, soccer, and martial arts. I simply bent my knees instead of my back and when I stood up I heard and felt a pop. When I try to turn my foot out or in it causes horrible pain. I’m swollen from the knee down to my toes and I have a tingling sensation in my toes. X-ray showed no bone involvement. Should I reach out to a orthopedic surgeon?

Today I am able to walk on it but experience a burning soreness after a period of walking. Excruciating pain along the back and even the front when I attempt to bend my knee all the way in. Fell November 2020. Had all symptoms. The locking knee and unstable seas severe for several months. Finally got an MRI and yes I had a torn medial oblique meniscus, and a sprained, MCL, bursitis and down at my ankle a possible tear of ligament on the outside of my foot along with three high sprained ligaments. I also injured my right knee and they are just now doing an MRI on it on sept 10th. I don’t walk right! I limp, I can’t place my weight on my left side of my body. I can’t get my leg up to put on my shoes and socks, I walk very slowly as if there’s something heavy against my legs. I can almost straight my leg all the way but can’t. I have to put a pillow under my leg/legs to give it support. I’ve been in physical therapy many times and I had one injection into my left knee and bursitis and 2 injections into my foot on top. Also my toes feel funny and my foot jerks, moves, twitches , shocking feelings etc. So far I have no real answers on how to get well. It’s like no one knows what to do for me. I’m getting scared that this is not going to get better since it’s been so long already. Though the knee popping and locking has improved quite a bit. My knee seems to bounce when I miss judge how far away the ground is. Also, waking without shoes is harder than when I have tennis shoes on. I need the absorbstion of the shooed. Can you suggest any direction I can go in in finding a solution with a good outcome?

Hey Docs, I'm 25 and dont know exactly when it souldve happened but my left knee has been in a bit of pain. It hurts if I plant my foot and rotate the knee joint, or walking around. The pain is coming from the outside part of the knee and it even is painful when I press on the area, like a bruised feeling. The area is what feels like in between the joint but on the outside edge. I'd like to add it's not excruciating or debilitating, the worst was walking around Walmart yesterday. Will it heal itself?

Just got MRI back saying I have a small tear in my meniscus and mild osteoarthritis. I injured myself severely a year ago, and at the time, the symptoms were exactly as you described. Intense pain, immobility, etc. Can a ‘small’ tear cause that much pain? Anyway recently, through generic knee exercises I pretty much have full mobility, but still occasionally suffer from pain, slips out of place, and always a sense of instability. I really hope I can get surgery for this so I can start again with confidence in my knee because I’ve had to put my life on hold for fear of re injury.

How do you identify if the tears are what's causing my issue? Seems to be more going on. MRI confirmed meniscus tears in both knees. Terrible pain behind the knees, along w/ Baker's cysts. Deep knee bending is the worst! Taking Meloxicam every 3 days for relief :( No trauma. Grew up playing soccer - No injuries. Otherwise in excellent health - 55 yo. Recently, possible overuse playing pickleball. I also feel muscle-like pain often in the glut area and my biceps on both both sides. Issues have been present for almost 4 months. Basically, all of my pickleball muscles. What can be the issue w/ gluts and biceps?

My husband is on track for a TKR this summer and has been doing his prehab exercises every day, plus seeing a PT twice a week. Today for the first time, he had burning pain in his knee (the one on which he will have the surgery). He took acetominophen and the burning subsided. Could he have a torn meniscus on top of the osteoarthritis damage, and if so would that be repaired during TKR?
@TalkingWithDocs

Hi Charlotte. Good question. So most patients that are getting a total knee replacement will have large tears of the meniscus. Physio can sometimes aggravate this and yes, the meniscus is totally removed with a total knee replacement and will definitely take care of that. Best of luck to your husband. I had an X-ray on my left knee because I have horrific pain after golfing. Bending twisting. It goes away after 2 - 4 days. It starts on about hole 12 to 14. Could it be a torn meniscus? should I get an MRI? the ortho said it was arthritis. Maybe wear a splint when golfing? What is the best splint/sleeve for knee?
@TalkingWithDocs
@TalkingWithDocs 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sally. Yes it could be a torn meniscus. Yes it could be arthritis. An xray is a good start and if it is normal or only shows mild arthritis then an MRI. Some patients find over the counter knee sleeves are helpful whereas others choose to have a custom made brace. It is a very personal choice. Start with over the counter and see if you feel comfortable and if it actually helps. Best of luck on the links! Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.

Hello doctor. I have an injured lateral meniscus(dont know what exactly the injury is, but I think it's mild). Just small pain, minor swelling and catching and popping sensations in the knee. So I was at the doctor and he told me to drink collagen every day for 1 month. He also prescribed me some anti-inflammatory pills to drink for 10 days. The collagen was pretty expensive so I suppose it's effective? What are your thoughts on collagen for knee injuries, meniscus especially? Will it really help my situation and how fast can I expect recovery? Even though it's a mild injury, it's been like this for 3 weeks so far. Thank you so much for the answer.

Hello Drs thank you for your video. I am a 30 year old male. I regularly play soccer and this year on 4 separate occasions I started to get pain on the lateral side of the left knee. After an hour of playing or doing any running or extraneous activity , the lateral knee area starts paining and then I stop playing. In 3-5 hours the pain gets severe and when I sleep I am not able to move my leg / knee. Seems like my knee is getting locked. If I try I move , something in my knee opposes that motion and I end up getting even worse pain and I am not able to move my left leg / knee for 6-7 hours. Then after 24-30 hours from the time it starts paining, the pain goes away. This pain doesn’t occur during my daily lifestyle or walking. Today I visited a orthopedic doctor and he thinks it could be meniscus tear and recommended to get me an MRI to confirm it. Could you please let me know your thoughts ?

You were talking about injuries that caused torn meniscus. Back in Nov 2013 I was outside working in yard and slipped on some wet wood, broke my right ankle in 3 places (surgery, plate and screws on both sides of ankle). Unknown until about 2 months later when the left knee started hurting and I also got the associated cyst to go along with the 2 torn meniscus the MRI eventually uncovered . But it was the cyst that made me go to the doctor, it was like, why do I have a huge lump on the side of my knee and where did it come from. After, shots, a laparoscopy to repair meniscus the 2 tears and remove cyst (which came right back) I am going to have outpatient TKR 4/1/21 at age 75 (and don't let the name fool you, I'm a girl). It will be a relief to finally be done with it and am looking forward to golfing without the darn brace.

Is it normal to still have symptoms of a meniscus injury after 7 weeks? The symptoms are slightly better, but they are still here. Catching and popping almost completely stopped in one movement and position, but it still happens in some other movements of the knee in certain positions. The pain is also smaller than the time of the injury. Swelling is also gone. I've been drinking collagen for like a month and still am, took some anti inflammatory pills as well for like 10 days. When will my symptoms fully disappear? Could it take like 3 months to fully recover from meniscus injury without surgery?

Hi doc's, mark here from Ireland just watched ye for 1st time, very funny. My gp sending me for MRI as he thinks i have a tear in meniscus. I can bend knee every direction, not much pain but feels as it is very unstable. Pain is on outside of right knee, and it goes under my knee to middle of leg just below knee cap. Pain most of day and night. As i said i can bend an squat, but pain is vry sore, going along the connection from thigh to calf, along the side and under knee. Not on knee cap. (1) Could this be something other than a meniscus tear? And (2) would cycling a bike cause more damage? I also wear a knee brace as doctor said it wud help stability until scan, is this a good idea? Thanks very much, sorry for long msg 😄
@TalkingWithDocs
@TalkingWithDocs 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark. Glad you liked it. So it could be a torn lateral meniscus. It could be related to early arthritis. It also could be related to your lateral collateral ligament and less likely the anterior cruciate ligament. Wearing a brace is good until the scan and cycling should be ok. Let pain be your guide. Best of luck to you and let us know what the MRI showed. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing if you did.

Hi Ethan. So your proximal tib-fib joint is over there and could be part of the problem. That is also where the lateral collateral ligament and IT band insert. All could be the cause. About 2 years ago (in 2020) I was doing weighted walking lunges where upon pulling upward from the ground I hear a tearing ripping sensation in my leg with excruciating pain following..the pain was so severe I nearly passed out. I suspected it was a torn quad and had an mri done a year later. I only had an mri done of the left quad muscles where I suspected the damage was from but the mri revealed no indication of quadricep tear. The upper top of the knee was the furthest down the imagery was captured and it revealed a sublaxed patella. This has been almost 2 years now and I still cannot walk without pain; I cannot dare squat, run, nor jump. Even lifting something that weighs more than 5 lbs causes significant pain and I have to put it down or lift it with one hand and bear weight on the other with my cane. The symptoms I am having are a deep constant bludgeoning pain in my knee cap almost like someone whacked it with a hammer..sharp extremely sharp stabbing pain in the outter quad region of my left leg similar to being stabbed with a small knife...very often muscle spasms and lastly unable to straighten my knee on my own without using my hands to do so; it causes extreme pain to try to straighten the knee on my own knee's usage. Every time my leg is not in a straight straight position I get sudden spasms and sharp pains. I have pretty much been suffering for two years and would be very grateful for any answer even if an estimate as to what you think is the matter. What injury right off the top of your head does this sound like seeing the mri came back negative for quad tear?

Took another week off with rest/ice/advil and exercises, but still bugging me. Pain is subtle, but enough to cause a limp. Medial-front. Hard to accept that it may be an MT, but I guess it sounds like it. Gonna try some in-person physio and continued rest/ice/advil and stay off running/any sort of squatting until resolved. Haven't called my doc yet, but given the current delays to get on the surgical table if needed... should I be starting that course now just in case? Great videos, cheers from Ottawa.

I’ve gotten hit by a snow plow while walking home from school in 8th grade, (in 2013) and the drs. Did not do anything about it, all they did was an XRAY. 10 years later now I’m having severe pain in my knee, and ever since 2013 my knee ‘pops’ and ‘cracks’ with every other step I take. Sometimes I need to stop walking for a second to crack my knee in order for me to be able to walk without pain. Any idea what this could be? Sometimes it feels like there’s a gap between my thigh bone and my leg bone where they connect. Although I’m heading to the ER today to get it looked at, do you guys have any recommendations as to what I can do? The hospital I’m closest to is known for not doing everything they should be doing to help their patients. (From my own experience)

Hefty surfing accident. Left knee blew up like a soccer ball (25 years ago). That night two large clicks. Outside (lateral) meniscus probably. Surgeon wanted to operate, left it and re-patched itself for NORMAL life. But can't squat like is required for surfing (which is a major problem). Inside meniscus seems okay, but outside definitely did something serious. Took months for the swelling to go down, but when crouching/squatting it always feels swollen even though it doesn't look it. 25 years later just got Xrays and will probably need a MRI to see what to do (because not squatting in sport is very constraining).

Had a subsequent surgery at 17 as it wasn't healing. I then had a 3rd surgery at 24 to remove some cartilage and osteophytes or bone spurs carved down I believe. I am wondering is it possible to fix tear and joint effusion with another arthroscopy, or the likelihood that this is what the orthopaedic surgeon will recommend. No. 1 evidence of a torn meniscus is: an MRI! lol My knees are doing a bit better guys, but the right knee occasionally has a popping or snapping sound, accompanied with pain. What is that? The flap of the torn meniscus catching or bending and catching on 'something'? Thank you gentlemen, you guys are awesome.

Hi Jeffrey. Yes, often the piece of torn meniscus is more mobile so can catch or click and cause pain. If you can handle it you don't have to do anything. If it gets worse, get reassessed. Thanks for the positive feedback. Good luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.

Hi Dr's I just found out I got a lateral meniscus tear Grade 1 I'm not in pain at the moment 1 month ago I heard a huge snap n had excruciating pain. Took pain killers n an anti inflammatory tablet. Pain was better so stopped meds n went to Dr 2 weeks after did mri n that's what it showed. Bucket handle tear He suggested arthroscopic menistectomy. I'm not sure if I must do it or not. I'm doing physical therapy n there's slight popping sounds now n again . What can I do? I'm putting more pressure on left leg n have to remind myself to bend my right knee. N not drag it Just scared I'm 64yrs old female Not on any other meds as yet

The trouble with leaving a bucket handle tear is that it could lead to acute episodes of pain and also the meniscus is often pressing on the end of the femur and can erode the cartilage. Worth a discussion. Thanks for watching and subscribing

Hi Docs, I have a torn meniscus( I don't remember if it's lateral or medial)that is about 5 years post injury. I have since had very difficult time trying to exercise. I recently re started a walking routine, trying to walk atleast 30 to 45 minutes approximately 3 to 4 days a week, when I can find time. Obese, and the weight doesn't want to come off easily,but have so far lost a few pounds. Reducing food portions, and cut back to minimal amount of sugar. I know that I should be strengthening my leg muscles but haven't been. The knee pain I have is intermittent with weight bearing and is also positional. No new symptoms since the injury. Is it okay to start weight lifting with ankle weights, despite the tear? I have a five pound ankle weight. Thank you guys for your videos. I wish I could be your patient, you look like wonderful doctors.

Did you get it operated on or at least go through physical therapy?

Hi Jen. So yes weights are ok for sure. Whatever exercise you can do. As for weight loss one method to consider would be more plants and less animal products. Avoid sugar. Avoid processed foods. Avoid white flour. Best of luck to you. Thanks for watching and subscribing

Interesting but puzzling. I'm a distance runner and my right knee has been bothering me since late November with medial knee pain, about a quarter, half an inch below the joint. The pain, in addition to a feeling of "weakness", manifests itself a day after I stop running but it goes away when I run. I thought it was pes anserine bursitis so I just backed off from high mileage running but I guess it could be a meniscus tear. It also hurts when I bend and straighten my knee while laying down, so no weight bearing. It feels like an "itis" (tendon, bursa, etc). I hear snap crackle pop sounds on occasion but they're below the kneecap, at the surface. ***Made an appointment with ortho for next week.

@@TalkingWithDocs I commissioned a PT and I can honestly say it has done wonders for me! My medial knee pain was apparently the result of overuse so my PT has focused on strengthening muscles that were neglected because of the one dimensional running routine. My "foundation" feels a lot stronger and stable now. I am running pain free now and my right leg/knee no longer feels schleppy like it did before.

It really depends on the cause. Lots of ice. Gentle therapy if nothing is broken. Slow and steady

@@TalkingWithDocs I think the cause I hit a rock under the water in a river at force and it had direct impact on the knee cap, then I was walking on the knee for around 4-5 days more until it began to really hurt
