Video tutorial on progressive reinforcement training to teach stay to your dog. This video teaches a sit stay, but you can easily use the same steps to teach a stand-stay and down-stay.

Kristin , thanks soo much for the vids, I love them all. I have a 12 week old border collie puppy I am trying to train. He has learned sit and come by the click method, I am attempting to teach stay and as SOON as I take one step back he looks uninterested and stands up and does something else.. Any tips? Is he just too young at this stage? Thanks!!

My Border Collie puppy is doing pretty well but he is just about to be 6 months old. He has mastered Sit, Shake, Lay, Roll Over, and come and stay are still learning.

Ooo, Luna LOVES to chase Milford and our kitten (they taunt her to). BUT it's controlled. Keep the dog on leash around the cats for at LEAST 1 month (I know, it sucks) but it will prevent the dog from learning to chase the cats and learn an alternate behaviour such as lying down and doing nothing. Reward when the cats run and teh dog stays.

Have you ever yelled or gotten frustrated during a session and perhaps intimidated her? Something negative has happened during a training session and she has now associated the two. Try changing environments (different rooms or outside) and use different cues. This could help get her back on track.

Give it time.... I have a client who's dog was deprived of any social situation until 5 months and couldn't do anything without being spooked or shy and now he's just over a year and REALLY coming out of his shell with the proper training :) I can't comment on his coat as every dog has different genetic make up.

I would advise you to REALLY spend a lot of 1 on 1 time with him and training him so associations can start that when he's with you, you protect him, you make him feel comfortable and you understand him and his needs. I would recommend you to get reading - shy/timid dogs are very very frustrating dogs to work with b/c we have to work at their comfort level. Please check my website for book lists.

i feel more comfortable watching krissykris1468 because the other videos of dog training take to much time.

Hi, first off, you should never ever correct a dog for following you. I know it's annoying cause you're trying to teach the opposite. You need to attach a leash to her and anchor that to something, then take a step away so she can't follow, click and HIGHLY reward. This will help physically manipulate her body to staying so she can understand nothing bad happens when you say stay, you come right back. Good on you for adopting! and good luck!
