It wouldn't go so well for zombies. The population is largely self sufficient so the situation wouldn't be near as dire. They also aren't as concentrated, meaning large hordes would be rare. The best "weapon" for a zombie apocalypse is the one that has multiple uses. A machete can be used for processing wood, building shelters, and hacking apart bodies. Some machetes also have other built in functions, like heavy flat pommels that you can hammer with. Carrying 1 tool that does 10 things is always superior. Bows are useful for hunting. They're also one of the only projectile weapons that you can practically make your own ammo for. Additionally they operate in near total silence.

considering the limited testing we have on skull like objects, I would suggest the following: 1. axes get easily stuck in skulls. so a two handed big axe, maybe. It doesnt leave much behind to get stuck in. A tomahawk, not ideal. 2. Hammers break instead of slice. So they generally do not get stuck that easily. 3. spears are much more effective than you would imagine, with the only disadvantage of it being a bit easier to miss the target in panic mode. so the best arrangement: ca 5 people, 2 twohanded warhammers, 1 spear, 2 police shields + one hand hammers or certain high quality machettes. The shields as opposed to the historical ones are light and a single zombie will have a hard time to reach you behind it. They are actually designed to keep unarmed people away. So the range keeps taking them down and the shields temporarily slow down anything that gets close and block the potential survivor zombies.So where a horror story will try to offer the idea of constant threat, with a shield you could fairly safely entertain a zombie for a minute or two if you absolutely had to. And at least 2-3 assault rifles to defend against other humans as backup, never to be used against zombies. lets also count the fact that non-fiction zombies would most likely be just crazy humans and therefore much easier to kill. They would even bleed out or starve on their own in a month or so. So a well supplied group could just outlast most of the problem above a destroyed staircase...

For one - NEVER USE A CHAINSAW!!! I used It on wood and I was dirty, the idea of infected meat and blood all over my face, possibly infecting without a bite, is not very appealing. And what I would use? If I get to a museum a halberd/naginata would be ok, if not I would get something blunt - a two handed hammer (or maybe just attach a long handle to a normal one), baseball bat etc. A winged spear could be good if I had an ally - lure on or two a few meters so I have time until others reach me so I can kill one and run, go for the chest, slam zombie to a wall and ally is safe while calmly attacking an immobile zombie.

Exept one thing everybody is always missing in such scenarios: if it is so contagious, why aren't you infected in the first place? That's what I much prevere in the Walking Dead series. The infection is not the problem but not beeing ripped apart by the hord. Much more interesting for the genre and ironically enough more realistic because if you get infected by beeing biten then there shouldn't be that much of an infection in the first place.

well aside from the general unlikeliness of a zombie apocalypse, I also find it very unlikely that you would need to destroy the brain of a zombie. The most realistic type of zombie would be one where its a virus thats taken over a human and the human is still alive and still requires sustenance, blood flow, oxygen, etc etc (in which case you could easily just hide and starve them out) they might not die as easily, but they would die from what would be fatal wounds on a uninfected human, given time

The type of zombie your talking about are fast zombies. Fast zombies are much worse to fight. They're easier to kill, since they are alive and the same things that can kill a human can kill them. Fast zombies are well...fast and very strong will all their pain limiters off. Their blood and flesh is infectious so to engage them safely you need to protect your skin, mouth and eyes from that. They will ignore any non lethal blow, that plus their speed and strength means you need to kill with a single attack. If they get close to you, you are dead.

The bladed edge on most swords would ruin after vigorous of use, katana like swords (slashing weapons) will blunt far to quickly for it to be useful. You could say hacking swords like the longsword or claymore would do better. But i have a hunch that the good old mace (steel top and steel handle) would do far batter, considering that the wear and tear wouldn't be much of a concern and the training requirements would be minimal. In general blunt weapons may be the way to go.

xxLeCurexx longswords aren’t hacking swords from what I understand. Falchions hack much better. Longswords slash and stab like Katana. Also you can sharpen the blade
@thelionofjudah53185 жыл бұрын
xxLeCurexx You do realise when you hit with a mace, it’s has a lot of stopping power and most likely the zombie will still be trying to get you even after a hit. Maces have no range and too slow for use, its primarily use was to fight other knights with full plate armor while zombies are not wearing any armor/armour. Best choice are polearms, spears and all swords because they have better range, and to fully stop the human body realistically is to decapitate the head.

Go to the closest DYI or builders store, head straight to the section where stonemasons/carpentry tools/gardening tools are, get the following items, branch chopper(big good solid knife), masons hammer(relatively light, well balanced, good recoil, ergonomic shaft), large carpenters hammer with straight back spike(very useful), after that head over to the part of the place that has work clothes, pick something in muted colours(zombies still depend on eyesight to spot you), the clothes are bite proof by defaults(several layers and insulated), grab some good steel capped work boots, a nice warm hoodie, a couple of woolen caps, two pairs of good thick work gloves, nice comfy hardhat(has a chin strap and some has visors, very useful). You should be able to make a shield in the store with the materals available in it and it also contains a ton of other useful objects(especially things like water bottles, long lengths of chain nicely spooled up, wrought iron nails, a whole host of things that can make fire, especially welders steel for making a spark is a very useful item that is called flint spark torch igniter, just squeeze and presto spark, congrats, you won't freeze to death). I recommend walking through a store like that and looking at the stuff with a fresh perspective, the place has pretty everything you need. You're now somewhat ready to fend off a zombie and you didn't have to locate a museum or an afficionado of medieval weapons. All of these items would be somewhat easy to replace for at least half decade.

Long swords are superior in function and versatility, a nunchucks would be ineffective, a zombie wouldnt feel pain, and you wont be able to deal enough physical damage to disable the zombie with nunchucks. Melee Baseball bats = Resistant, don't need sharpening or edge alignment Makeshift spears = Easy to make and easy to replace (knife + wooden shaft or just a wooden shaft with sharpened tip). Machetes: Pretty much good for everything, can chop wooden things aswell as zombie heads a good mix between the axe power and a sword with better durability. Firearms: 9mm Pistols = lots of ammo around (since 9mm bullets are very common around the world). Shotguns = Doesn't requires perfect aiming, shells can be recycled, crowd control, won't jam so easy, and 12 gauge shells are pretty common. P.S. Automatic weapons needs frequent maintenance and can jam randomly, so they aren't good in long term.

I just want to note that if you consider zombies as the target blunt weapons would be ideal. My argument for this is that zombies are generally predicted as dead bodies with reanimated life. Meaning that we can consider the general characteristics of a dead and/or decomposing body. This would mean that bone gets harder to pierce but brittle and what we consider soft tissue will get even softer and bleeding is for some reason not a factor for zombies, strange. What this means thou is that we hit a walking cushion with really hard pieces inside. Soft targets generally are harder to cut since you will have to pressure for the cut and if you don't get the edge aligned properly there's a good chance it will just bounce off instead. Piercing weapons like spears should suffice and give good reach but hitting a wobbling head on a stumbling zombie rushing towards you could prove to be quite challenging. A blunt weapon like a bat or a quarterstaff would be easy to use against a zombie since you can throw it off balance with the first swing and simply smash its skull with the next. Hence this would be my weapon of choice for general defence against these straggling foes.

This video is completely ignoring a huge chunk of zombie pop-culture. Pick any random zombie movie or tv series. Where are they fighting zombies? 8/10 it'll be indoors, or in a forest or other place with lots of obstacles or confined space. I'll take a gladius and a medium sized round shield. In fact, I'll have the rest of my party equipped with shields as well. In the off-chance we'd encounter a zombie horde, we could form a defensive shield wall. Zombies aren't really known for their battle tactics, so even a modest group could potentially survive an encounter with a far greater number of undead.

There is a specific time when we can say "clip" and be accurate, and that is a truncation of the term "stripper clip" used in loading the M1 Garand. In general, people who are educated in firearms are very stringent about such terminology, and we either scoff at and ignore those who say "clip" in reference to a box magazine, or to those capable of learning, we advise them to always say "magazine." I was going to say the same thing. The basic difference between a magazine and a clip is this, a modern rifle or handgun feeds from a magazine, either a fixed/internal one or one that's removable. A clip, in turn, is used to load said magazine be it internal or external. The one notable exception to this is the M1 Garand which feeds from an 8 round en bloc clip that is inserted into the magazine of the rifle but is not removed like a stripper clip is.

The simple point that though not all agrees but I do think that it IS a splendid weapon to have during a zombie apocalypse cuz it deals good durability and cutting power from the sword itself. I'm sure if you can't hit it's brain but it can still cut the head off and it can still be considered as a "At least", right? XD. A good melee to carry and less weight worries." *Bow & Arrows; "I'd like to mention that I'd love to have and carry this along the way cuz for example, 2 days or more after the outbreak, I'm pretty sure the city or wherever would be quiet cuz most of the people are probably... you know XD. Anyways, my idea on Bows and Arrows is the idea of stealth. In short, we can't just fire our guns all the time to kill a zombie. Don't you think and agree that it could (or it really would) lure zombies on your range after you fired your shot? So this is why I'd like to carry bows and Arrows, not just for stealth, but it could also give less worry on the weight you'll be carrying. I do and I am aware that it's bad for close range (Duh), this is why I'd had me Katana. xD" *Pistol; "I'd like some heavy firearms and some rifles for more firepower and more clips and that could really terminates zombies in your range. But my reason on why I'd like to bring a pistol instead is because of the same reason that it would be hard enough to walk and run around a city or somewhere and probably you'd get tired faster because of the mass you will be carrying. Also to mention that we'd probably be bringing extra stuffs like extra food, water, extra clothes, health kits, ect,. Pistol is my choice for long range fights when necessary (Stealth purposes and avoiding on attracting zombies further)." I'm just very cautious and during an outbreak, I'm sure that we are all aware that people will be running around and some have already gone mad. So it would be good to have less weight while running around. Overall, I'm more on stealth to avoid and have less attraction to zombies. Though I may not have much firepower but it'll be not so hard enough to carry enough because they're less weight than bringing lots and lots of firearms and ammos. Hopefully the zombies would be like the classics though that would like walk onward unlike the modern zombies that sprints and climbs. And hopefully zombies would be... less sensing. XD *Exhales* Is this good?

We're taking running-outta-stamina out of the equation here, because using ANY weapon at all will get you worn somehow, so that's a no-brainer. & guns, other than shotguns or fully-auto ones, aren't exactly as potent to zombies as they're to humans, especially when you'll miss the head easier than you'll hit it. & then, same old problem, you'll eventually run outta bullets.

@mithmon20848 жыл бұрын
Compared to quality European swords, katanas are thick, short, and front-heavy. They also bend instead of flex, unless they're made the same way as a European sword. I would not use a sword against zombies, anyway. If you've got the room to swing hard enough to cleave a skull, you can use any number of "outdoor" melee weapons, such as spears. I would go with some kind of one-handed fighting axe, with a "beak" (spike, like a warhammer) on the back side. The beak would efficiently puncture skulls without getting stuck, and wouldn't require much space to be swung indoors. The blade could be used for breaching or as a general tool.

Good discussion Dr. A clip is a piece of metal that holds rounds of ammunition together for transport and loading, like the metal thingy that holds five rounds for an Italian WWII Carcano. A magazine completely encloses ammunition and is inserted into the firearm to deliver the ammunition to the firing chamber. Other than the 1898 Mauser Broomhandle pistol, pistols use magazines. Point of order :)

Just a nice, sturdy short hammer. Quick recovery. Durable (Bladed weapons will need constant sharpening, its highley likley a gladius or sword will last you half a day at best) However if you dont keep polearms, warhammers and axes around your home. Just take a good well-built garden spade, and sharpen the edge up. Viola- you have a zombie killing beast.

I dislike the idea of using firearms on zombies for the reasons of having to pause to reload, and that firearms are better employed against human marauders. That being said, firearms are okay as backup weapons for when things head south.The weapons I would choose to confront zombies would depend on the numbers involved. How many zombies are there? How many people with me? If I am alone, then a katana or other long weapon is good. But if I am with other people fighting as a group, long bladed weapons can prove to be a disadvantage. For a sizeable unit fighting in close quarters, I would take the Roman route: short sword with a shield. We should also keep in mind that the heavier the weapon used, the more limited the duration of the battle. Swinging about too much weight will quickly tire the fighters, and perhaps cause them succumb to the zombies.But, there is one weapon you didn't mention: flight. It would be best to fight zombies when humans have the advantage. When we are at a disadvantage, and the opportunity exists, running away is the best strategy. Remember your Sun Tzu!

Hi Metatron, greetings from Austria and a guy also being obsessed about roman history! What would you say working as the romans did (that seems to me a good option for a lot of things *ggg*): Use not only the weapon, but a (small) shield, too. So you can push him / them back without the danger of bites or being wounded, and similarily you smash the head with the gladius or a spathaor maybe a battleaxe. But a small round shield seems, just for me, very effective, because you also can bring the zombie down with it for zombies also being slow and stumbling, i.e. they are not very well on their feet. A good option may be a long telescope baton with a serious weight at the tip, too - having a good range, a mighty impact, and you can carry it easily.
@sushanalone8 жыл бұрын
You did not cover 3 important points. One is the lifespan of a weapon since the apocalypse is gonna last for a long time. Blunt and less sophisticated items are easy to maintain, use and repair. Also range advantage weapons work only if considering that you are in an open area. Since you would be spending a good amount time in congested areas full of collapsing structures for scavenging the range advantage could work against you with longer weapons. Finally those large pole weapons would be a pain in the ass to carry and walk through congested areas. Id carry a fanged mace for close quarters and a war hammer for open areas. Ofcourse a gun if i had one.
@BattlerEvil8 жыл бұрын
For close quarters i would still choose a blunt weapon over any cutting weapon available, even a normal tool hammer could do better than a sword? Why? A sword even though it is an excellent battlefield weapon, it is not great against skulls, whatever the sword is. Aha, you may say a greatsword or a longsword would do better and it has more reach but you will have to maintain a sword, oil it up, keep it sharp and you have a high risk of getting infected yourself as a cut would splatter the blood everywhere while a blunt weapon might not do as much of spraying the blood to your loved ones. So what would i use? Poleaxe, just incase i want to cut, i can use the axehead but i would primarily use the hammer-end to kill zombies and use the spike to hold one back so my friend or family can finish it off. For close quarters, i will have to go with a warhammer. (A one handed one, not the fantasy mallet of a thing that you can probably barely lift up, let alone use it in the battlefield.) First of all, i have a spike which could penetrate the skull EASILY and still not spray all the blood to your face or your friends, and of course the hammer-end, one wack and i think that zombie is done for good. I personally wouldn't use firearms at all, one shot and the entire horde comes after you.. What do you guys think?

Zombies are dead people, they lose muscles, they rot slower but they lose their strength. That is explained very well in The Walking Dead as most of the zombies who freshly turned ran fast, used their brain a little too (like using bricks to smash windows). @renviluan28422 жыл бұрын
I'd prefer the ginunting. Good for thrusting, excellent in building traps and shelter.. the forward curve of the blade makes it easy to parry may it be swords or zombie arms. Maintenance is easy. The curve also allows you to thrust through windows without exposing yourself too much. It may be short but f you're in a wide space you can just run away. While a short ginunting is best for tight quarters. Also can have a handguard.

Full plate armor would make all of these weapons viable, as you're practically invincible.
@dylanwilson91318 жыл бұрын
MisterAnonymous It would get tiring after walking all day in full plate armour, heat is a problem too. I think gauntlets and some sort of vest, a modern stab proof vest would be the best option. The rest is unnecessary, because if you have a weapon with you the rest becomes obsolete, the gauntlets would probably be the most effect because if you have your forearm guarding in front of you the zombie can't get past, then have a one handed axe or kukri/machete in the other hand to attack with. A weapon like a kukri or machete is also vital, because they're also tools.
@Riceball018 жыл бұрын
You wouldn't need full plate to protect you from a zombie, a mail hauberk and some misc. sports gear to protect the exposed areas would be sufficient. Heck, most motorcycle gear should be enough to protect you, a human just doesn't have the bite force to penetrate anything particularly tough like a strong plastic and neither do we sharp, pointy teeth to help with the penetration. So, a leather biker jacket with some arm & elbow pads along with something for the legs and you should be fine.
@titytitmk27388 жыл бұрын
Thing is, leather clothing would be adequate in stopping a zombie bite. A zombie isnt biting thoguh leather anytime soon. the only time you would need full on armour would be against other people.
@Riceball018 жыл бұрын
Titytit Mk2 I agree with the caveat that it has to be relatively thick leather, not the thin and soft stuff. It would have to be something like boot leather or from a riding or flight jacket, otherwise a zombie could potentially bite or tear through it, particularly if their teeth are broken. I think that a combination of moderately tough leather and plastic protective sports of riding gear would be ideal.

Best medieval weapon options would probably be to use a sling or slingstaff for ranged combat, for closer range, utilizing a pike modified with a reinforced crossbar similar to what is used for boar spears and adding a heavier bracing spike on the end, position it to catch the ones in the lead, then use their forward momentum to stabilize the pike and then switch to a melee weapon. For melee weapons, a lot of it depends upon what kind of zombies you're up against. If it's a plague type, you really don't want to go with swords or axes because that spreads contaminants around and pretty much any armor you're using isn't going to be that good at keeping a biohazard out of it. For armor pieces, some of the pieces bolted on for jousting armor to protect the face and neck would be very useful to both protect yourself from the thing trying to get at your skull and to keep infectious material out of your face. The nastier thing to deal with would be if there can be animal zombies and how mobile they'd be...zombie crows would be a nasty menace if they could still fly to some extent...
@12brunni7 жыл бұрын
A problem with larger weapons is a lack of maneuverability in tight spaces. if you are in a city and are trying to scavenge, that could be problematic. Ranged weapons come withe the problem of ammunition, and guns in particular are extremely loud. If you shoot, you might get swarmed. A gun as a hold out, a short halberd or naginata, and a flanged mace and dagger are probably your best loadout. As for armor, a helmet (something medieval and pointy world probably work best, with something to hold it to your head like a bike helmet) , shoulder pads, a kevlar vest without plates, and a pair of metal grieves and bracers would probably work best.

+Metatron Your analysis is very flawed. Zombies die by beheading AND spinal cord damage(you must intrerupt the nervous connection to the brain), so neck is still target. Also primary target are the kneecaps. An almost immobile zombie is not very dangerous. A smash into the mouth breaking the jawbones? No more biteing. Best weapon for me: homemade spears with metal implements on the side preventing the blade to get stuck. Not exactly halebard but similar

It's all hypothetical. Also, as I said trained forced don't shoot the knee, it's not a target. It's easy to say "I would shoot the knee" when you are confortably sitting on your couch at home. Panic, stress, noise, distractions, fear, all these things make the knee cap a incredibly hard target to hit. I would always advice to attack the centre of mass, just like trained soldiers and agents are taught to do. Same concept for the jaw and neck. SInce with a zombie the centre of mass thing doesn't work, I would go for the next best option, which I think would be the head.

Interesting fantasy discussion. Three ideas/questions: 1/ What about use of carry? That's what made some of the technically better fit weapons somewhat unpopular in actual history. Also, in woods, or a urban environment, long weapons become ineffective. 2/ In that scenario, I don't necessarily care about (re)killing the zombies. Making them unable to move is enough. So destroying the limbs may suffice in most situations. 3/ Sling and slingshots? That would in my opinion be good, transportable weapons. At short-to mid range, these are effective without too much training (esp the slingshot), and you get virtually unlimited ammunition. Also: much more fearsome that you may think. That shouldn't be your only weapon though... if you can help it at least.

@JmbFountain8 жыл бұрын
Baseball Bats are not really effective at destroying brains inside of skulls, and Molotov Coctails do have a habit of setting yourself on fire. Hatchets and Machetes are very similar to swords and other medieval weapons. Actually in areas like Germany and Italy there are more medieval weapons around than firearms, basically every town or village has at least one museum with some dozends of those... swords, halberds, crossbows and so on.

The "beak" (spike) of a warhammer on one side, coupled with an axe blade on the other, as a one-handed fighting axe. The beak would puncture skulls efficiently without getting stuck, and wouldn't require as much space as most weapons. The blade could be used for breaching, or as a general purpose tool. Hatchets/machetes/swords, and any other one-handed bladed weapons risk getting stuck in the skull. Two-handed weapons are good for outdoors, but in confined spaces can get tricky.

Being a master archer I can answer a few things from your video: First, I think a bow is an OK choice, however a crossbow is a bad one. A crossbow is easier to shoot and aim, however reloading even the most nimble crossbow I have shot takes up to 15-20 seconds for a trained user. Now with a bow you can shoot faster if you are trained, so here comes problem #1: a bow is only a good weapon if you are trained. Even hitting a target the size of a head from 5 meters away is almost impossible for an untrained individual. Yes you can achieve training quite qickly with archery and become good at distances up to 20m, but past 20m it gets more and more difficult. However reloading is still a factor, I can shoot about an arrow every 1.5 seconds and hit a head sized target from around 15-20m, but I am an expert. Farther away I will need more time or hit farther apart. Next problem is that most archers at home will have so called field or target tips, which are small and round, so you can easily draw them out of the target you shot. Even most bowhunters will have a limited supply of hunting tips, so you might run out fast, as they are almost useless the more dull they become (new they are razor sharp). As for damage that you need to cause, most hunting arrows and tips are designed to deliver a high amount of force to break through bone (good against Zombie) and then cut the heart and lungs in a canal (not so good as no damage is spread). So my guess is you would need a large diameter hunting tip with at least 3 blades to make a big enough cutting canal to sever enough nerve endings. So my final verdict would be: Yes it could be a good weapon in the hands of a master archer at an optimal range of about 15-20m, but you have to be ready to fall back to the choice of cutting weapon. However there is a final advantage: A bow is silent. Guns will attract more Zombies, where a bow might not. If you are ever interested in more info on archery, feel free to contact me we can skype or make a video together on the topic (I am from Austria).

I am going to suggest a shortened poleaxe (4'') with only a 3" to 4" spike. It gives you some range. You can strike with axe or hammer for crushing or chopping through skull. the spike maybe able to punch through the skull at the weak points, eyes, nasal area, or mouth to reach the brain. You can do multiple thrusts. You can also use the poleaxe cross body wise to push one or more zombies away. I envision the need for such a weapon in various environments, to include the open as well as confined spaces, such a building. The thrust allows for confined combat where you may not be able to swing a bastard sword or two-handed axe. Since I would be mainly concerned with escaping, rather than farming zombie damage, the poleaxe allows me to hook onto the top of a wall or fire escape and pull myself out of a bad situation. The axe or hammer can also be used batter through a locked door , fence , or wall. Toward this end, I would also like a very sturdy reinforced butt, piece shaped like a chisel to pry open doors and such.

For melee weapons, I think it's best to go for something that has utility. I think trench tools and machetes would be best. Trench tools are shovels that have a sharpened edge and various other useful bells and whistles on them like can openers and hammers that are useful. Machetes are also good because even though they're not quite as versatile as trench tools, but what they lose in utility they make up for in damage. They're better for actual use as weapons. I go for these ones because you don't want to be encumbered by survival tools AND large weapons, so a tool that does both is a good choice. Plus, because you're gonna be carrying it around a lot, you want to compress the amount of weight you're carrying so you can be fast. (Also make sure you bring something that can kill bacteria if you plan to have it near food, would be embarrassing to turn into a zombie after killing them like a badass because you ate their zombie germs). For ranged, I'd go for something that's semi-automatic, compact and can accept high capacity magazines, so I'm thinking something like a pistol. The thing about long firearms is that they're not quite as good for indoor, close range shooting as pistols because they're not quite as manoeuvrable. You don't want to be firing at things a long distance away because, even if you hit, you're wasting ammo on a target that's not a huge threat to your current situation. You need something you can shoot targets from roughly 10ft away repeatedly because your gun is intended to be the weapon you use when facing multiple opponents or fighting in enclosed spaces. You also want to limit yourself to one gun to keep yourself light and you want something compact for the same reason. You also want high-capacity magazines to make sure you spend as little time reloading as possible because time spent reloading is time spent being vulnerable. Also, you'll want a suppressor if the zombies rely on hearing to detect you and some sort of sight assistance like a laser is good because you can spend less time re-aligning your sights for each shot. I'd consider a polearm style weapon because the range is fantastic, but the problem is that it's more weight on you and you'd constantly have to hold onto it, plus you'd have to leave it out doors if you plan on going inside a building. Bows would be decent because they're silent and it's possible to create your own ammunition for it, but the rate of fire is really bad and it's not the sort of thing you want to be using indoors. Swords are good for killing but that's all they really do, same goes for blunt weapons like maces.

Destroy the brain, or sever it's connection to the body/ destroy the primary nervous system. -Knives and daggers? No. Way too close. -Swords? Better, have to watch your distance, add armor and you're good for a while. -Spear? No. Good, but not good enough for what you need to do. -Hammer? No, see the knives. (same with mace and flail) -Warhammer/Axe? Yes, does the damage, has decent range. -Baseball/Cricket bat? Sure, same range as swords, but will do damage to brain through the skull, might not have enough stopping power though. -Hockey/Lacrosse stick? No, not enough damage. -Bow and arrows/Crossbow and bolts+quarrels? No, not enough damage, too difficult to hit your target. -Poleaxe/Halberd/Bill? Great, you can cut through their heads (smash/pierce them) from a short distance away. -Handguns? Maybe, depending on the ammo load, might be able to pierce the skull and kill the brain, problems from ammo shortages, and having a powerful enough caliber/load. -Rifles? If possible, shouldn't have a problem with the skull, definite power increase, but ammo is even more important now (most hand loaded cartridges will be slightly less powerful at least). -Muskets? Maybe, a powerful enough musket will damage the brain enough, you can easily make powder and balls for it, etc.

It stands to reason you could carry both a knife/dagger and a longsword as back up weapons, or side arms. Also, you don't HAVE to kill the zombies, you can take out a leg to slow them down, you can throw nets over them to tangle them up, you can do anything you like to incapacitate them enough for you to get away. Hell, firecrackers set on a fuse as a distraction would do if you've yet to be spotted and need to get past some. Ideally, when you get away, you want to move towards the equator, where the temperature is warmer - to accelerate decomposition. Fresh zombies would be a LOT tougher than ones that'd've been rotting for a few months. If you can, mail armour couldn't hurt either. It's pretty difficult to bite through that. Anyway, I'd go with a repeater crossbow. Preferably modernised with lighter materials and greater tensile strength - as well as the option to add a bayonet. I'd have a longsword and a knife - separate from the bayonet, giving me two knives, or one knife and a bayonet.

I'd probably go for a pole hammer/ pole axe or halberd (maybe shortening it for more versatility indoors). A good spring steel katana wouldn't be bad either, since not too short and not too long and two handed chops can easily crush skulls anyway, but also break or even chop off limbs (see Thegn Thrand's or Skallagrim's test videos).

Melee weapons would be nice since they wouldn't run out of ammo, but one bite and it's game over, so your first priority might have to be some kind of full body protection. Something modern that might work might be a shark suit. Might be hard to come by one after the inevitable zombie apocalypse starts though, so hopefully you prepared ahead of time. If you're a Medieval enthusiast then full body chain mail protection would probably work. After acquiring suitable protection against unforeseen circumstances, such as zombies dropping on you out of nowhere, then you could go about arming yourself. In most media zombies are portrayed as slow, stupid, but strong. They would probably not be terribly hard to hack or bash to bits once you were suitably protected from them. A good mace would be better than an aluminum bat, or a quality sword better than a machete, but any of the above might be able to get the job done against single opponents, and when shit really hits the fan that's when you fall back on your firearms.

Sorry I did not see this sooner (ie 5 years ago). I love your videos and thoroughly enjoy you explanations as they are based with logical reasoning and facts. Even for videos such as this, solely for what-if entertainment purposes. The one issue on this that I felt was mossing was the usage or lack thereof, of armour and shields in conjunction with your weapon choices. The two really cannot be separated as they directly influence the function and purpose of each other. For instance I agree that a gladius on its own would be a poor choice to go against a zombie opponent. However, if you add a shield to equation, then the gladius makes much more sense. Now, not everyone will have a shield necessarily on hand, but this is a fantasy scenario anyway, as not many people will have a gladius either or need to be concerned with zombies. But assuming you could have what is necessary for this apocalyptic narrative, then my personal choices would be a spear (faster than a polearm, but agree may not be as effective) a small shield like a hoplite’s or viking (appropriately 1 meter in diameter), a short sword like a gladius or xiphos or dane’s axe. And more importantly have for my armour a set of “leathers” or motorcycle rider’s jacket, pants, boots and gloves. The helmet will be nice too. As it would not be too difficult to source these in today’s day and age. The “leathers” would be thick enough to prevent any human zombie bites from penetrating and thus negating that aspect of contracting the contagion or disease. And finally, a short recurve bow with hunter’s broadheads on the arrows. Maybe a replacement with a shepard’s sling and a small bag if metal bullets or ball bearings would top of the kit I would have in a purely melee point of view (ie no firearms). Then again if this were devised by Hollywood then I would go running around half naked armed only with a small folding pen knife or a sharpened pencil. I would be interested in what you though of my choices.

I think you need something that accounts for most circumstances, inside vs outside, alleyways and corridors vs big open spaces, the amount of hostiles vs the time to kill, the type of zombie/infected against how to disable/destroy them, So many variables, so many options Personally I'd carry a crossbow strapped to my back, a pistol and knife at my side and a sword in my hand with an attachable staff for a makeshift polearm also on my back, as I could craft bolts, and once my firearm is deemed useless I'd put it in my backpack for that just in case moment I find usable rounds, yeah I'd be a cross of Daryl, Morgan, Rick and Michone.

I’d use a long-handled hog splitter. These were made to break down whole animal carcasses. Enough leverage and length to go through skulls and necks easily. Relatively straightforward to sharpen and maintain. Can also repair easily or re-mount to a longer grip easily. The back edge can also apply a lot of blunt force. It hits like an axe but has a bigger area to hit with and is more wieldy. Even at closer range, just grip higher and a hog splitter is still very usable. I theorize destroying the spinal cord could paralyze a zombie the same way it does a human. Since the brain can no longer have its signals reach the rest of the body. So cleaving the neck could work, too. No need for complete decapitation or crushing the brain in that case, just crush the spinal column. The head would be still alive but it would essentially render the zombie harmless.

To be perfectly honest I really enjoy how you take so many factors into consideration and dispel a lot of myths from popular pop culture and what not if you don't mind I would like to point out a few little details you may have overlooked firstly with regards to your statement about Close Quarters stabbing weapons such as knives and daggers the concept that you have to pierce the skull and damage the actual brain itself directly is someone of a myth technically all that is required is stopping what bio electrical impulses are traveling through the spinal column and into the brain stem Ergo all you have to do is Sever the connection at the base of the spinal column yes it is riskier and less likely to occur without serious risk to yourself as far as your statement a blunt weapons such as a one-handed mace I point out that there are other weapons similar to that nature such as morning Stars as well as ball and chain flails that not only will actually increase your range but utilize any extra momentum and energy expended into any strikes not to mention giving you flexibility on reflexive countermeasures I really love the fact that you brought out the Roman Gladius and explained its origin but coming from the Arsenal available to gladiators you neglect to mention things such as the katar the general weapon type of ax was a great thing to bring up I personally just feel that you used not such a great example for your hypothetical situation to be honest I think you should have been using an example that was more designed for this type of combat such as axes used by the Vikings and the Danish ax in regards to your statements about using swords if you were to use a sword a medium to short range would be most ideal especially if you were to be dealing with an urban environment which would include closely confined areas such as hallways and Office Buildings for example also vehicles subway cars buses trains Etc I really do enjoy your Channel you remind me quite a bit of how they went about with making this show The Deadliest Warrior you are awesome at doing your research invalidating your sources please continue to do such a great job even when presented with constructive criticism such as this which brings me to one of my most favorite things about you that you can give and receive constructive criticism gracefully

I think the best strategy would be an adaptation of the classic Swiss pike square. The pikes would need cross pieces near the sharp ends to prevent a zombie skewered in the chest from pushing his way up to you, and would help to push wounded or dead zombies off your neighbor's pike. I think the pikes should be mixed with a variation of a long war hammer. They would be fairly light as hammers went, but the weight at the end. The hammer end would be a wide point, designed to crack the skull and injure the brain, but with minimal penetration. You don't want your hammer getting stuck in a dead zombie while the next one comes up on you. Perhaps the pikemen could skewer a zombie in the chest to hold it for a good head shot by a hammer man, and then somebody could push the body off the pike with the cross member of another pike perhaps, or maybe the blunt end of the hammer. Pikes in a formation would be invaluable for holding off hoards of zombies. You can plant the butt end in the ground to hold back the pushing from a crowd of zombies, while the hammer men deal with them one at a time. On the issue of whether complete destruction of the brain is necessary, I think we need to default to the movies. Since zombies as we are imagining them are actually impossible, we can assume that whatever works in the movies will work for our imaginary exercise, since that's where all the rest of our information about the zombies comes from. Therefore any sufficiently violent impact or piercing of the head seems to work. I think the hammer idea would therefore be sufficient. I'm thinking of an enlarged version of kind of hammer designed to break car windows in emergencies. I think survivors would be able to find wood and metal sufficient to build such things. Sharpening the pikes would be a little harder, but I still think that would be the best option. In any case, I think it would be a really good time to know a good welder and blacksmith.

Maybe a Sword-spear or a Nagamaki. Something that could provide decent range, alternative attacks other than just thrusting, and offering a good option for fighting a lot of uncoordinated bodies all around me (I could just start swinging for all I'm worth, and even if I don't kill the zombie I could still very well slow it down and just run away. After all, the main idea here is survival, not racking up kills). My only weapon right now is a katana, so realistically I would just use that. I've always doubted the effectiveness of guns for the average person, not because guns wouldn't be the best, ultimate option, but simply because for the average person you'd run out of bullets way too quickly, and you wouldn't be able to replenish your stock right away because of the chaos that you mentioned at the start of the video, with EVERYBODY wanting/needing to get their hands on more bullets. Non-consumable weapons are the best bet early on. Heck, I suppose if you're strong enough then even a metal baseball bat could potentially be enough for you in place of something like a mace or a war hammer.
@nooneofimportance21107 жыл бұрын
interesting video. My personal choices would be to carry a variety of weapons, a 9mm pistol for medium range, a 12 gauge riot gun loaded with buckshot for close range, a sword, a knife, and a modified baseball bat for melee, depending on the situation. The key would be knowing which weapon for which situation. The knife for extreme close up single fights where you simply don't have the space to use anything else, the sword for single melee confrontations, the bat for open spaces against groups, the shotgun against things less than 50 feet away, the 9mm for things between 50 and 100 feet away (roughly), and nothing for long range, because at long range you can run away.

I think what would really work well would be a spear or maybe even a Naginata if someone knew how to use one (guess those count as a polearm though) that or a standard battle axe kinda like you mentioned in the video but that would be limited to range if used in the proper/traditional way by keeping your grip with the hand close to the center for thrusting and proper balance, but if you swung that battle axe like a madman then I'm sure you'd be mostly ok( lol I was hoping this in the middle of the video and you mentioned allot of the things I was saying so I had to edit this quite a bit but I'm satisfied with what I said) also if I had to choose a weapon It'd be any long range melee weapon like what you started talking about close to the end.

Best ranged weapon: Battle rifle or carbine. Fires fast enough to dispatch multiple zombies at good range. Best melee weapon: Axe. Very versatile. Can decapitate someone's head or crush their skull in melee combat and can is a useful tool to boot.

Spectre battle rifles have more powder behind them and thus have more recoil. It’s also heavier with more expensive ammunition. An M16 is heavy enough to reduce the recoil and will make target acquisition easier in this situation.

to answer the question: longsword it is good in large spaces, you can cut legs if you are good enough, and you can stab with a good range if you have to fight in confined spaces if you have to fight in a massive battle and you find a shield somewhere, you can use it relatively well with a longsword however, an arming sword would be better if you plan to use a shield

I've always felt that a piano wire garrote would make an amazing weapon for stealth. You'd obviously want another weapon, but if you're sneaking up, you are gaining control of their head, which you can squeeze until it pops off. If zombies are rotting like in the movies, this would make it even easier.
@bigmikey76476 жыл бұрын
Simplicity is a highly overlooked element for this kind of conversation. Swords, or any other bladed weapon, require training and practice, which most people don't have. They also require nearly constant upkeep. A good hammer, on the other hand, is easy for anyone to use, and is just as effective when it is covered in dirt and pitted with rust as when it is brand new. A forged steel hammer with a medium to long metal or fiberglass handle is easily attainable at any hardware store for a very reasonable price, and it serves a purpose in real life, as well as being a preparatory item for facing possible future zombie hordes.

Metatron, here's an idea: while the top of the skull is very hard, the top of the mouth is not. So instead of trying to half-sword and stab the zombie in the face, or waste my time trying to CUT through the skull (which historical skeletons show us was anything but easy), I would try to stab upwards under the chin. Even better, using a curved sword like a shamshir, or a falx or a sica, lets you hook upwards from a slightly bigger range than a straight sword. Something which IIRC was actually occasionally done with a sica by gladiators. Or even better I'd go for some form a polearm with a curved tip in either direction, such as a two-handed dacian falx (the more curved version on the Tropaeum Traiani, not the one on Trajan's column), certain kinds of bill, or a bardiche (basically hit upwards with the back). Just an idea.

Only problem with blades is bone. Katanas are okay if they’re made to good quality, they can cut right through bones. But otherwise all blades will chip and warp when striking bones. Honestly, as much as I hate to say this, blunt weapons might be a bit better. Not gonna chip, won’t break quite as easily

For my Zombie Apocalypse loadout, I'd get a Stanley 30" Fubar (there are several models and I'm unsure of which is best tbh beyond I definitely want a 30 incher), some sort of machete or kukri type cutting tool, a smaller utility knife, and a crossbow (possibly a reverse crossbow) for reusable ammo. I would have firearms however they would be reserved for fighting violent survivors or situations where the **** hits the fan; this said, I'd want a revolver that can take multiple calibers of ammunition, an over-under bolt-action rifle/ shotgun (preferably one that can take multiple kinds of ammo for both barrels albeit that will almost certainly require swapping out said barrels), and an automatic pistol with a suppressor, choosing a pistol that's a reliable, easy to maintain design with subsonic shots and a different kind of ammo than what the revolver uses, finally choosing a suppressor that's a good balance between long-term reliability and effective sound suppression.
@peterwilson13807 жыл бұрын
machetes are good but have range limitations. I'd keep options to hand. Start with a quarter staff as it's versatile, sturdy and can be replaced easily(ish) if you know how to make one (which I do and have... I'm currently better at making them than using them...). then a good sword and axe (if it were human battle I'd favour a shield over an axe but for zombies it's just a heavy handle for them), favouring Viking style for both as I'm more familiar with shape and limitations than with other styles. Finally I'd make sure to have some sort of club for the last hope (only a last resort due to range and clumsiness from my current inexperience), probably a blackthorn walking stick (as I often need one to walk anyway). for range, I can make some decent bows and arrows but mainly I've usually got a number of slings worn as accessories anyway and my accuracy is improving quite nicely. Better the weapon you know than the weapon you don't.

I know this is old, but anyways... The Gladius WAS used for chopping in formation. Someone (I think Vegetius?) advised that the legions should be trained to only use the point. This wouldn't have been brought up if the legions already only used the point. For polearms, I'd suggest the pudao. Some are fairly flat and blunt at the tip, so you could use it to push zombies away if you start getting overwhelmed, and not risk stabbing in and getting stuck.

+Metatron I wouldn't choose a sword at all cause you must think preservation. A gallowglass axe would be fine (polearms are heavy to carry around and you would definitely need to run a lot in a situation like this). Maybe for secondary melee a smaller axe and for firearms AK-47, AA-12 automatic shotgun and any revolver.
@19AngelsSorrow897 жыл бұрын
I'd go for the can opener (the Halberd), because a) you have the range advantage and b) it can chop of some limbs (even a zombie will stop walking without legs, giving you time for a finishing move) as well as smash the skull. Plus, I really love the halberd knights of Stronghold Crusader :D

Against slow undead, yep. But against fast undead the only tactics I would see succeeding would be to create a choke point in a fortification and implementing a triplex ascis / phalanx / testudo formation a la roman. It worked against hordes of barbarians that attacked in hordes at full force, it should work against the undead. The only problem would be that a zombie doesn't gets tired and can exert much more pressure and brute force than a human and if one grabs you then good luck escaping. Therefore, the defensive lines should be interchanged more oftenly to avoid quickly exhaustion. For archers, I would like to suggest tactics seen in books such as World War Z, were rifleman are instructed to have a romam esque discipline when shooting. Create some kind of critical line in the field of the choke point and instruct them ONLY to fire when an undead crosses the line. This is done to have discipline, not succumb to panic and have a better accuracy instead of wasting arrows from a long distance. By waiting it also helps to give the archers time to breathe and rest for a while. But if the undead are like a la Resident Evil....we are fucked, because zombies would be the less of problems.
@frankrobinson13222 жыл бұрын
I think if the ancient Roman Legion were faced with a zombie horde, their shield wall tactics of switching out the front row, and fighting from a high ground position, would be highly effective, this worked against armies of men with fully functioning brains, who could duck ,dodge, and block. I see no reason why this wouldn't work against a group of rot- brains.
@kecukraftwork19882 жыл бұрын
What you said makes sense. The only counter I could provide is thus: preservation. Those fully capable humans had restraint because they didn't want to get injured or killed - and so they *would* block, duck and retreat. Zombies, however, are typically shown to have no sense of self-preservation or registry of injury; and so are more likely to go full gusto in their masses.
