You guys were talking about a "collective" top album of 2023. For sure you can get the #1 with a bracket of 2023 albums. Getting a top 5 would be complicated, but it's doable - you could work backward through the bracket if you wanted to get that.

Great show DEHH. Been following the channel for a long time. We all knew it would come down to Kendrick and Pac lol. Realistically, Kendrick isn't in Pac's weight class as a pure songwriter or all-around MC, in my opinion. He makes masterful albums with intricate concepts and is second to none in that department, but when you separate the songs from the albums in their individual components, Pac's SONGS are much more iconic, memorable, energetic, and have wider range: Dear Mama, Keep Ya Head Up, Ambitionz, So Many Tears, I Ain't Mad Atcha, Brenda's Got a Baby, How Do U Want It, Old School, Only God Can Judge Me, Pain, Blasphemy, Hold Ya Head, Against All Odds, Me Against the World, If I Die 2Nite, If My Homie Calls, Trapped, Krazy, Hail Mary, Changes, Thugz Mansion, Hit Em Up, To Live and Die in LA, Heartz of Men, Wonda Why They Call U, Picture Me Rollin, Lord Knows, I Get Around, White Man'z World, Do For Love, 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted, Can't C Me, etc. Kendrick is more technically proficient and more creative/experimental, but Pac mastered the uncanny skill of reaching listeners with the genuine passion in his delivery/vocal inflections (whereas Kendrick's voice is probably his weakness) and mastering the art of addressing complex subject matter using simple, relatable language. Kendrick is the more prolific storyteller and technical lyricist, but Pac is far more influential and raps with much more conviction, has a stronger delivery, more artistic range (see the bangers and more introspective deep album cuts named above, which is even more impressive when you consider how much music Pac gave us in 5 years at the pace he recorded such iconic records), more UNDISPUTED classic albums, has more quotable lyrics, and not to mention, he's battle-tested.
@shettywap
@shettywap 9 ай бұрын
Kendricks voice is one of his strongest aspects. The guy used to change it frequently. 😂 I don't agree about pac being superior. I think this mainly relies on what we think his mystique is from being killed. Artists become deities once they're killed or die early. Their music becomes something "ethereal" that doesn't necessarily match the actual content of the music. Pac has an important voice, but it had little variation. Most people can imitate his cadence without even thinking about it. And towards the end, while not even being around for that long, he became a caricature of himself. This was musically and in his real life. If Kendrick were to get killed or overdose on drugs (this is also a pathway to becoming "deified", it would go the same way. People would listen to God from Damn and think it was a masterpiece. Despite this being one of his weakest and most trash songs. Lol
@shettywap
@shettywap 9 ай бұрын
And the reason most of pacs songs are iconic, is because he adopted a thug culture that was popular at the time. I'd also like to note how much that kind of music isn't necessarily great for the community. At the very least when he was writing his pro black panther stuff, you can point to something positive. The latter part of his career did little to help the communities he was talking about.
@esquire601
@esquire601 9 ай бұрын
@@shettywap I respectfully disagree. I could just as easily say the draw to most of Kendrick’s songs/albums is attributable to him being an experimental, conscious rapper in an age where lyricism and creativity in the mainstream is virtually non-existent, but I won’t because, as is your argument about Pac, that would only be half-true. By the way, I have Kendrick in my top 10 all-time, and Pac is in MY top 3 (all things considered, not just lyrics). I named 30+ songs in my original comment, and at least half of them have positive messages. His thug persona aside, his songs are iconic because of how gifted of a songwriter he was, how memorable/quotable the lyrics were, and how universal the themes were (examples: loving your mother, family, romance, spirituality/religion, feminism/womanhood, poverty, race and politics, warfare, childhood trauma, etc.-the most prevalent themes in Kendrick’s entire catalog). Nearly every heavyweight emcee to hit the scene since the 90s imitated or was influenced by PAC in some way (Cube, Nas-my favorite, Kendrick, Cole, DMX, Scarface-who also influenced Pac, etc.). Without even talking about the fact that he’s the most influential artist by a landslide, Pac gave us more classic records in 5 years than 95+% of rappers have given us in the 27 years since he left us. I Respect your viewpoint though. It ultimately comes down to personal preference based on relatability and which generations of fans are making the comparison.
@shettywap
@shettywap 9 ай бұрын
@@esquire601 most definitely a personal preference, and I respect that as well. His influence is definitely prolific. You won't find an argument from me on that. I just don't always find the influencer to always be the best, even if people come to draw inspiration from them. Kendrick will have successors, and they will probably eclipse what he does, as that's the nature of an art forms progression. His earlier albums have more of the "positivity" (and I hesitate to call them positive), and at least working towards something "good." Sure, he has a song here and there about things other than being a thug in the latter half, but that was the bulk of the subject matter.

Pac was born in Harlem, lived in NY from when he was a baby to age 14, moved to Baltimore at 14, moved to Marin City in the Bay Area at age 17 with his mom and sister. @@SoulOfTheSouth Ok that’s fair, i forgot the acronym of his name. I’m guessing it’s because his career didn’t really start frfr until he moved to LA. Blu beating Earl is kinda crazy, Blu made a underground classic for sure but Earl one of the few really changing how rap can even be done. Blu is just straightforward great but he's definitely not reinventing the wheel

Feel like the Tyler and Kendrick seeding was kinda whack. Would’ve loved to see Tyler on the left side of the bracket and see if anything changed

I think even on the obvious ones in the first round especially, you all should give a little more in depth about both artists about what you like about the artists maybe some of theyre famous songs or your favorite songs for them to make it a light education for the ones on here below your generations. Itd give us a starting point if we wanted to dive deeper. Helps bring value to the first round instead of just flying through it

@@TreDoes. Lol I was torn on this one. Ramona Park broke my heart was my favorite album that year. Too short has a catalog of greatness, just like snoop he had eras. Short also had a song called "little girls" on his first album. Also I didn't like Kendrick vs Tyler so early
