Best Wide Lens For Micro 4/3? | Rokinon 12mm Review

I was able to get that Summilux 12mm you mentioned for $500. When I saw it for sale on Craigslist I was intrigued. When I found out what it cost retail, I snatched it so fast. Used, almost mint, for less than 50% of retail... still goes for about $900. Shocked I got it this cheap.

Solid review. Im going to pick up this lens for my a6400 to start vlogging on a budget. Manual focusing shouldn't be too bad. At $250, it looks like a steal. The 16mm 1.4 is what i really want, but i can't justify spending $400 right now. When the quality of this lens is up to par to get started.

Another option is Lumix Leica 15mm Summilux f/1.7. It's not wide as 12mm, but amazingly sharp and price isn't bad for Leica branded. I've got mine new from Japan on ebay for ~$400....

This comment is in no way meant to come off as hyper critical or pretentious by any means. Just want others to be aware of another possibility. You mentioned the Summilux as being the only other wide open aperture option for shallow DOF at an ultra wide angle, and the laowa venus is an obvious one but the one you did not mention and is commonly passed over is the voigtlander noktons. 17.5mm, 25mm, 42.5mm and the most recent being the 10mm all at 0.95 aperture which is a godsend to gh5 shooters who don’t want to upgrade to the gh5s. Takes some time getting used to, and they have a certain character about them that reminds me of old high priced tiffen filters, but at 20mm equivalent it’s a boss of a lens. I keep one with my voigt set that I use primarily for weddings and sigmas for commercial work - it’s amazing how well they pair for the narrative they portray. Just my two cents :) great video keep them coming

Lenstip absolutely slammed the Voigtlander Nokton 10.5mm in their review. They said it has: “weak image quality on the edge of the field of view, huge vignetting, monstrous coma, high astigmatism, visible spherical aberration, significant field curvature, ugly out of focus areas, field of view over two degrees narrower than stated in the specifications, weak price/optics quality ratio.” I was very disappointed as I own and love the 17.5mm and 25mm, and I wanted the wider view. Do you think their review is fair, or did they get a bad copy possibly?

@@joeltunnah the 10mm is definitely the weaker of the trio. At 0.95 chroma is monstrous on all of them lol. But the 10mm is more noticeable. Typically I crank them down a bit anyway to sharpen the image, but to answer your question yes, it does suffer from some of those more than others. The trade off for me when I used voiglander was the character of the image and the sharpness stopped down a few. Even at 0.95 it is capable of great stuff though. But the 25mm and 42.5 were used far more in my case Switched to lens booster and ef glass years ago and haven’t really looked back.

Great video quality! :) I love the rokinon 12mm. I did a video about that and the 85mm a few weeks ago. I think the 12mm is a really underrated lens. Very versatile!

I have the laowa 7.5m f2. I use that lens for my KZbin videos. It sucks it has no image stabilization so I’m going to use it on my gimbal with the GH5. I want the sumilux 1.4 version as well. I see online $830 at the lowest. I’m planing to get grab it soon.

Love the video Nigel. Something I noticed when using wide angle lenses up close like this is the level of distortion, particularly on a human head. It gives off kind of like and egg shaped figure instead of what a normal head shape would look like coming from like a 35 or 50. Yea the camera is set further back but at least my head looks normal :P What are your thoughts on this distortion and does it bother you? (or anyone else) Thanks. Keep up the great content.

Thanks for sharing this information about the Rokinon 12mm lens. I wanted to buy this lens for my BMPCC 4K but the mount was different from my camera. It was on a Z 1 Cam and its mentioned that it fits the MFT mount. What mount do you think the Z Cam 1 uses? Or what adapter should I buy to pair my BMPCC 4K with this Rokinon 12mm lens?

The z can E1 is a micro 4/3 mount just like the bmpcc 4K, so a micro 4/3 version of this lens will work on both. This lens comes in 4 mounts, micro 4/3, Sony E, Fuji X and Canon M. So just make sure you’re buying the micro 4/3 version for your bmpcc

Can someone help please? I’m looking to buy this lens (the Samyang version) for my BMPCC original and I have noticed that the F2 is slightly cheaper than the cine lens T2.2 version. Beyond the physical elements is there a difference really between the cine lens and the “normal” version? I’m a bit of a scrooge so if the glass and the image is the same I’ll get the F2, but is it still a ‘cine’ lens in that respect? Ps I’ve subscribed as your vids towards those of us who are on a budget are brilliant.
