I haven't found a shoelace yet that lasts more than about 6 months on my work boots, I have had better results with a hard sheathed synthetic laces like the bass pro lifetime laces(550 Paracord sheathing probably would be comparable) or a decent pair of leather laces(not the kiwi brand) because they don't fray as much. It should be noted that leather laces can sometimes have a defect that makes them easy to snap in one place so you do want to pre stretch the laces a bit. I once twisted an emergency lace from kevlar thread that lasted fairly well, but it was a bit too narrow and time consuming to make so I would probably want to make a machine to twist laces before it becomes a viable solution.

@@triplea6174 First, the Carolina lace grommets weren't completely flattened on the inside so it poked my foot. I hammered them down flat and had no problems after that. Second, the under foot feel is just better in the Thorogoods. I alternate my boots everyday and every Monday morning I choose the Thorogoods. I won't argue if anyone says they like the Carolinas because they are also good.

I’ve worn the Carolina’s for work for about a year now. When I first got them I had to condition the leather to soften the toe box because it was a little flat and was compressing down the top of my foot too much. I had to replace the insole as well but for the price I paid I’m happy with them and would buy them again.

I've been wearing 6" Thorogoods in both soft and steel toe since I started in the trades. I've always loved them. I was a carpenter from when I was 19 until this year when I when I started welding. I'm 24 now and even though I don't need as much ancle support as I did framing I've still decided to go to an 8" boot and this video convinced me on the Carolinas. My next pair of work boots will be 8" soft toe Carolinas. It don't hurt that I live in SC so I like the name of them.

Embarrassing question . Do they smell off? Like the leather? I been through two pairs and they seem to smell weird. I wear carthartt socks. Might invest in something better. Danners and Irish setters haven’t “smell”. And it’s not stinky feet. It’s just the leather has a certain smell to them.

I own the 8in Carolina in the review with a steel toe, work in aerospace manufacturing on a epoxy’d concrete floor for 9hrs. On my first resole 1.5 years into ownership. Very comfortable, don’t notice the steel toe. They are extremely comfortable, had a one day break in when new and after the resole. Factory sole and vibram replacement wear out similarly. I don’t see a difference in rubber and polyurethane based sole. Overall good value, wide toe box. Heel is more narrow on Carolina than T-good, may affect stability. But I’m 160lbs, 5’10”, had no issues on concrete. Very soft and comfortable.

I've tried both. I bought the Thorogoods during the last Moctober due to what I learned about them on your channel. The Carolinas are more comfortable because the lateral stitching that goes from the upper to the moc toe area is located further up. The thorogood boots have the same stitching further down and when the boot flexes, it creates a pinch point on the top of my foot. The Carolinas do no pinch the top of my foot when kneeling down like the Thorogoods do. Thank you for this review!

My local shop just sold me a pair of steel toe 6-inch Thorogood's for 195 out-the-door! Couldn't believe it. This is their standard price and people drive from all over the state to get them here. They're not broken in yet, but I already love them! Cushy, lightweight, and they look awesome! All of my friends swear by them and I can already see why. Broken in, they might be the best boot I've ever purchased, and I've spent double the price on other boots.

I have been using the Thorogood Moc with the steel toe (804-4200) for about six months now. I purchased them primarily because of Moc-tober last year, I really wanted American made because I want to support local as much as possible (even if it is regional) but the need for a steel toe excluded Red Wing (Their Irish Setter brand wasn't nearly as good IMHO). I work approximately 60hr work weeks on flat concrete shop floors. I can say without a doubt these are the best boots that I have ever owned. I agree that I wish the welt was leather but I haven't seen any cracking in it as of yet and the wear on the sole has been little to non so far. Really interested in the Carolina boots, I absolutely love the tobacco leather look, and would consider those as another daily driver boot considering how close they compete with one another from your review. Really enjoy the content you create, keep up the good work.

Concrete eventually takes it toll no matter what you wear. Both of these boots helped me get through around 8 months of Planter Fasciitis in both feet at the same time. I've wanted a Moc Toe Wedge Sole boot for a while and not wanting to go cheap. I normally wear a 12W or sometimes an 11.5W. That said, Red Wing and Thorogood were completely out. I tried and way too narrow even 2E width, they also run long. After watching you cut the Thorogood and Carolina in half and compare, I figured that I'd give the Carolina a look. I read a review that said the Carolina has a fuller toe box than the Thorogood and Red Wing, so I went to Overlook Boots in Glen Rock PA with great success. They have a large inventory and very willing to assist. The Carolina size 11.5 D was just a bit snug with medium weight socks and after a days wear they feel incredible. I sell both boots and even with the extra stitch going through the front of the sole the Thorogood sole holds on a little longer. The Maxwear poly sole also has an advantage over the "softer" rubber vibram soles in that it passes the OSHA slip and oil resistance ratings if you work shop conditions. Really it comes down to fit. The Carolinas run a bit wider.

One nitpick: the soles on the Carolina and Thorogood are probably the same sort of "rubber" as Vibram uses on their Cristy soles. They are oil resisting, but not nitrile (BNR), so they are probably Synthetic Natural Rubber (a.k.a. Polyisoprene Rubber; SNR or IR) since that is the type of rubber likely to be oil resisting and used in a blown sole like that, and that shade of white is the natural color of that rubber. The "rubber" on Vibram's wedge soles is also SNR (Vibram explicitly says so); Vibram's soles might be blown a little differently or might be a slightly different compound, but they are very likely the same type of synthetic rubber. (I don't think natural rubber is used in soles in 2021.)

I paid around $120-140 for both my Thorogood and Carolina moc toe tobacco boots. The build quality on the Thorogood is definitely slightly better. But if I just had to buy these off the shelf without shopping deals, I would go with the Carolinas, since I can find those for $165, where the Thorogoods are going to be $215 or higher. Speed lacing and break in on Thorogoods is far superior. But the Thorogood soles do have that risk of delam (at least mine have), and Carolinas are springy out of the box (break in for the Carolina upper took about a week).

Carolina has stepped up their game these past few years imo! Never cared for them before but i bought a pair of dukes last year and they are one of my fav carbon toed work boots! Insoles were comfy but didn't last very long. Although i always blow out most insoles pretty quickly. Replacement insoles are always a must for me. Keen utility insoles being my fav. Recently bought the Carolina 4X4 waterproof carbon toed boots. Fit was nice. A light tight in the rim of the boot, hoping they break in. Thin stiff insole (Not a fan). See how long they will last?.. One problem i seem to have with boots is being that i am a dominant lefty, left boots never fit me right! The right boots usually always fit me good, but my left foot is slightly larger than my right, so i seem to have weird fit with any left boots. I'm sure some righties have dealt with this issue before with their dominant foot..?! Can anyone relate? Any remedies? Thanks!

Need to throw the ever-so-popular (at least at my workplace) Irish Setter moc toes. So many employees swear by them, I believe it's nearly a 50-50 split on Thorogood and Irish Setter ownership. A great idea to thank the viewers for the channels success would be to have an end of moctober giveaway. A few viewers to win moc boots of their choice. Just an idea.

Not sure if it has already been stated in the comments (way too many to read each one, but great for the moctober discussion) but I have both the thorogood and Carolina moc toe boots. I felt there was an incredibly noticeable difference in the weight of each. The Carolina’s feel much lighter than the thorogoods. Both pairs have held up for multiple years of use in an industrial maintenance setting. But the noticeable weight difference has me sold on the Carolina’s for future purchases. Thanks so much for adding them to this years Moctober selection!

I've been wearing Redwing 606's for years and finally made the switch to Moc toe boots about 3 years ago. I spend a lot of time walking on concrete and my feet, knees and hips definitely like the moc toe wedge soles better. I've tried the Thorogoods and the Carolinas. One thing I'd like to point out is that I have a wide foot and a 2E width in the Carolina is a wider boot than the Thorogood in the exact same size. The Carolina felt like slipper's when I first put them on, the Thorogood had me wanting it in a 3E or 4E which by the way isn't available in a Throrogood. The Thorogood is a good boot but took much longer to break in and required boot stretchers to aid in the break in process. In my opinion the Carolina is way more comfortable and more generous in the toe box than the Throrogood is. You can talk about what each boot is made out and while it is important comfort and correct fitment is MUCH more important.

I bought the same pair over and over after that at 120$ (5pairs/10 years), recently bought a 160$ non steel toe 8" work boot with low heal, heel support, comfy blue insole, waterproof, orange accents... Boot is amazing like all the last models i bought. Georgia for Life, they make a boot for every job. Just ordered a sweet pair for my girlfriend for her bday... I hope she loves em like i do 😊

It also depends what version of the boots you are buying. The Throughgoods you paned across had EH or Electrical Hazard in the tounge. No break in...absolutely a great boot. 2 days ago I purchased the Thorogood tobacco 6 in moc toe from boot barn for $240.00. Carolina is more comfortable and have a nicer toe in my opinion. For the money obviously carolina wins... but I do like the Thorogood. I work all day in the thorogood boot and I feel like they are durable and feel good. Much better than the $150 wolverine moc toe durashock line, and obviously blows the old Sears die hard out of the building.

I have 3 pairs of Thorogoods. Had some work boot vouchers to use up. I’ve been wearing 1 pair of the non steel toe Thorogoods for about a year now. My job consist of a bunch of walking on concrete. They have held up pretty well. Very comfortable. Easiest break in I’ve ever had with a boot. About 2 days and they were molded to my foot. Actually so comfortable I think I’m wearing Airmaxs or something. Downfall is they are pricey. If I didn’t have company boot vouchers then I’d probably go with the Carolina especially knowing how close of a moc toe that they are. Great video!

You’d be hard pressed to find thorogoods under $200 anymore. Their prices have jumped up so much over the years. At my store the Carolina $174.99. Thorogood is $215. Thorogood has trouble keeping up with demand and shuts down production for months. We’ve had issues with thorogoods coming back with sole separation at the toe. I was just at boot barn looking at both of these boots in person. The American made carolina was under 200 dollars and the thorogood were 250. Nearly every pair of thorogood there had problems with the welt being put on poorly and a huge gap between the welt and front of the boot. If not for this problem I would have bought a pair. The ones I was actually looking to get were 8 inch waterproof moc toe and they were 289 dollars. No way could I spend that much for a boot with a defect. The carolina also seemed much more comfortable out of the box and also looked better to me. Saying all that a chose a pair of carolina maximus 2.0 because they are waterproof and also have a toe cap. I will be ordering a pair of the carolina moc toes soon though as I love how they fit.
