I don't usually comment on videos but but.. now I can't help myself! By far.. BY FAR, the best, most informative, clearly illustrated videos I have EVER seen on any subject! These videos are near perfection in every aspect and this is something very rare so I felt I had to give my praise. I have been playing disc golf for 16 years and had to learn everything the hard way and still learned a lot by watching these videos. Thank you!

Seriously. These are exactly what DG needs. Bring some real science and numbers to a usually casual game. This adds a level of legitimacy to the game that the casual observer would never know about. It also help new players see WHY discs do what they do and help steer them in the right directions for disc selection.

As an engineering student, I really like seeing these videos. You always do a really good job of presenting potentially difficult to understand concepts in really helpful and intuitive ways. Great job, can't wait to see more!

This video series is a great introduction to disc flight mechanics! One thing that is missing from this discussion is release angle. You can essentially make a less stable disc behave like a more stable disc by releasing on a hyzer line, and the reverse applies for an anhyzer release.

I would be very interested to see empirical/scientific data and demonstrations on the relation between various throwing techniques, and outcomes such as distance, hyzer, anhyzer, and what not. The effects of the grip, specific stepping motion, turn of the body and arm, and when where and how to snap it... Would be fascinated to see how all the many different forms of logic out there match up against the science behind the aerodynamics of a disc in motion.

glad to see another vid out!!! very informative , keep it up. I have a star wraith. I don't think I throw that fast but descent. On a good throw I can hit +400 but usually 350ish. I put slight hyzer on a rhbh make it flip to flat and instead of fading left it just keeps going right. Do I just need a new one to get some stability back or get a different more stable disc? I may grip lock a bit

I have a question, does more turn help the disc turn right if the disc is understable or is it just your speed of your throw?

In the SPEED and GLIDE -videos you explained the ratings from a physics point of view much better. (As coefficients of drag and lift) I would really like you to make similar physics-explanations of TURN and FADE as well. This video did not actually explain what in the design of the discs causes the turn / fade rating.

why is the turn scale 1 to - 5? why not just 1 to 6 with 1 being the disc will turn left and 6 being the disc will turn right? Or am I missing something? ...thanks.

Could you give some examples of how you might measure arm speed/ ave disc speed? Is it simply using a a radar gun? Or is there more to it?
@Bestdiscgolfdiscs8 жыл бұрын
+SimpleHumman It is normally done with a radar gun, measuring the speed of the disc right after it leaves your hand.

I don't understand why a lot of tutorials on disc golf recomment understable disc for beginners if, as explained on this video, overstable discs offers more consistency (even if the thrower cannot match the required speed). should i buy an overstable disc as my first disc ?

I'm a bit confused. How would a headwind cause the disc to fly further than a tailwind?
@PImmaluffelum7 жыл бұрын
Just to clarify. Will the disk turn into sort of an anhyzer shot if released with enough speed, or will it stay perfectly leveled, but just sort of move to the right before fading to the left? Hope you understand my question :)
@Bestdiscgolfdiscs7 жыл бұрын
Yes, it can even flip all the way over and become a roller with enough velocity and understability.

Thank you so much for your reply. That explains what I've seen happening on my drives lately. Thanks for clearing that up :)

As a lefty these videos make me sad. I am new to the game, so I'm not sure how some of this applies to me. I want something that combats the right fade on my backhand. Does that mean I should go for an overstable or understable?
@Bestdiscgolfdiscs6 жыл бұрын
The concepts for LHBH (and RHFH) is exactly the same, only the actual flight lines will be mirror images of what is shown in the video. If it makes you feel better, I'm left-handed too :-)
@sundayfunday20118 жыл бұрын
does this also go for left and right handed throwers like a left handed thrower would be better with a understable and a right handed thrower would be better an overstable?
@Bestdiscgolfdiscs8 жыл бұрын
Brandon - The disc selection process for left and right handed players is the same, but the flight paths will be mirror images of each other. For example, both left and right handed players will get a highly predictable turn from overstable discs, but the for righties the turn/curve will be to the left and for lefties the turn/curve will be to the right. PS -- I throw LHBH

How does one know the speed of their throws to have an idea of what kind of disc to use? Just trial and error?
@elitejd22178 жыл бұрын
the first number the speed needs to be regarded not just the turn. the speed is a greater factor in velocity required! example a -3 turn disc with a speed of 11 will flip or turn way less maybe none if not thrown hard enough compared to a speed 7 with -3 turn will flip or turn more than expected.
@Bestdiscgolfdiscs8 жыл бұрын
Elide JD - We certainly agree Speed is a factor! For this video, however, because the goal is to explain Turn the models use standardized Speed ratings. We explain how Speed and Turn relate to each other here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5KbiHykh9WBl68

How do i throw a sidewinder with -3 turn or a dragon with -2 turn so that it doesn't stay flipped and become a nasty roller
@cbh1487 жыл бұрын
slower, or hyzer ("wing down"), or some combination of the two. also, try washing the discs in hot water then lay them on a flat table while they're still toasty so they can cool off, and set something flat on them to add some even pressure to the discs to make them a little less domey (to raise the parting line height some, which makes them more stable than before). this will also help alleviate some warping that the discs might have from being in a hot car mashed up next to other cargo or whatever.

But what the fuck makes a disc over/understabe?! I've been trying to get that question answered for hours and I just can't find anything on it. Is it disc weight? Or where the weight is? The sharpness of the edge? Something else?
