I use this principle too. Though rather than a wise idiom from my father , I learnt it from phoebe in friends. She tells Rachel shes not actually pregnant after all, after a second test. Rachel then realises she kind of wanted to be and feels sad and phoebe tells her she lied - and now she knows how she feels and should keep the baby.

I'm a native Angeleno, born and raised, lived in NYC for 11 years but moved back to L.A. 4 years ago. It's interesting to hear you say all this. Some of what you said is dead 100% true like fake nice, urban planning, and I just about DIED when you talked about traffic because it's SO TRUE. I live 8 min from work but it would take me 30-40 min after work because of traffic. A lot of what you're describing in terms of diets, personal appearance etc the "typical L.A. stereotype", I believe to be "entertainment" related. Most Angelenos in East L.A. or the San Gabriel Valley aren't worried about such shallow things. As far as race, I mean, you live in West L.A. / Central L.A. I don't see how you could feel so out of place considering these two parts of L.A. are the much wealthier areas made up largely by white and asians, especially if you went to UCLA. But I dont live in your shoes. L.A. isn't for everyone one but I'm glad you gave it a shot. Having live in NYC for over a decade, I still miss it very much and there's lots to love about it but I'm glad to be back in L.A.

Elin Winblad maybe that is what someone can get from my message but it’s not what I totally meant. I like that feeling but I like being successful in what i do, being hardworking and important for those who I know I matter to, but today’s society is simply to overwhelming for us as individuals. It is so easy to be stuck in this circle, which leads to social anxiety, depression, feeling of never being good enough. And based on that, yes, I think that feeling anonymous is great sometimes.

K Will i truly get your point because at the end of the day i think it’s all about experiences and personalities. I live in a small town in Italy, with backyards, neighbours i’ve been knowing since forever, I went to school with everyone who lives here i swear. It’s peaceful and people are nice and for a long time i was convinced that this was the reality of life. But then i started University and i moved to one of the biggest city of the country: that was a new discovery for me. I’ve been surrounded by people my whole life and that was the first time that i could be me without the fear of turning down someone’s expectations, and without having to explain my personal choices. When i wrote that comment my intent was not to denigrate any other life experience so don’t call me an insecure losers just because you love your life and i love mine.

Ashley, you probably won’t see this, but in case you do: I’ve been binge watching a lot of your videos recently because you put me in a better mood. I was trying to pin down the exact reason why, thinking it was your outfits or the vintage jazzy music or your pretty edits. And although all those things make me excited about fashion and music and artsy stuff, what really gets me is your attitude. I really aspire to be as independent and optimistic and brave as you are. You put effort into so many areas of your life and it pays off. Seeing that makes me wanna put in effort too. But you’re also relatable and make me feel like it’s okay if I’m not productive all the time. You also make me feel like I don’t need a guy to be happy and there are so many things in life that can make me happy. I’m sure lots of people agree with me and I just wanted you to know that you really are a role model to me and make me feel really happy and inspired when I watch your videos. (I don’t usually say things that cheesy that was hard haha)

i’ve lived in brooklyn my entire life and one of the things i love most about this city is how easy it is to ground yourself. when i’m feeling anxious or just need to distract myself, i sit on the red steps at times square and people watch. its really cool to do this later in the night when there aren’t as many people, you really get to take in the beauty of times sq which is something that i forget a lot. and people watching, its usually tourists so you’re seeing their faces, how happy they are and how much fun they’re having. it makes me feel happy and hell i usually end up volunteering to take their pictures lmao. but you don’t have to go there, theres so many places everywhere around the city where you can just sit and take in whats around you. also, i live near the subway and late into the night when i can’t sleep, i close my eyes and listen for the sounds of the trains departing and arriving. it reminds me that i’m not alone, theres people awake right now coming home or leaving for work, and whatever i’m feeling isn’t bigger than me. i hope you find that here too. welcome to new york, baby! ♥️

Nice perspective! I went to New York last year and it was nice having activities to do everyday. Even if you don’t have something planned there’s already so much around you to just explore and go with the flow. I enjoyed that aspect of New York. I did feel a little drop of sadness that comes with the city..And it’s just that it’s so busy and you can tell others around you are hustling as well that you can almost feel like a character in a book that has “awaken”. It feels like others have been hustling along with their fast paced lives that they dont realize the “ system” that they’re in. It becomes almost monotone. I don’t think it’s something that you can’t deal with though. You can find some relieve by using these sources to go out with friends, go sightseeing somewhere, go walking and feel less lonely

Fastforward to today when I'm looking up apartment hunting videos for a new job in LA. It's been a while since bestdressed posted a video and looking back, I realize how refreshingly honest and pure of a soul Ashley had. I don't think I understood the value of that until years later. I don't know if she'll ever be back, but I hope Ashley is happy wherever she is, be it as a owner of a clothing line or something else she found passion in. It’s interesting to see the perspective of someone from the East Coast. I think that on the West Coast, rather than seeing it as being “fake-nice”, we see it as being polite or friendly. It’s like how you said, we are pretty spread out here, so you are oftentimes unlikely to run into people again, and it’s more about having a casual interaction that is ultimately insignificant but positive. I can see how people who are not from the West Coast might see these interactions as shallow or fake, but it’s just kind of part of the culture of independence. I also think the “Mean Girls”-esque reference to the “fake-nice” people who talk behind your back is a projection of insecurity which I personally struggle with. Usually, people are self-centered and are not actually thinking about you or picking you apart. I think people here generally are pretty genuine and suffering from the same insecurities that we all are.

I've lived in LA for many years being single and not single. I totally loved living in LA. Like she said different neighborhoods and different circle of friends make a difference. I've lived mostly in K-town close to Wilshire and also downtown. Always only a few blocks from my office. Also I could always escape and go to anyone of my sisters 30 mins (I have 4) or back to my parents in 1.5 hours. She had a difficult time because she's at a time in her life where people struggle to find out who they are and what they want in life. I think she would've felt the same way to a certain level living somewhere else. I didn't realize LA was so superficial until I moved away. I've lived overseas for 8 years now. I wear makeup once or twice a week when I feel like it. Not everyday because I don't feel the pressure to compete to be prettier than the girl next to me. Thank God for my sisters because it was impossible to make girlfriends in LA. And I'm talking real friends! Not ones who threaten to break up with their bf because he was hanging out with me alone because she didn't want to come to a planned outing at the last minute and warned her bf that I'm promiscuous. I was single. My sex life was not a matter for her to judge. I was a good friend. Her boyfriend was a good guy. (Sorry for the rant). So her jealousy came from within and she was reflecting her insecurities because we gave her no reason. I have to say most of my friendship with girls never went pass surface level and I think it had mostly to do that the culture/society made us competitors and enemies at the start. This then comes to insecurity comment. Please everyone has insecurities. I don't agree that she is insecure or her opinion about LA stems from her insecurities. LA is fake as fuck. What she said about meeting people and the second question they ask you is "what do you do?" This is not only LA but very American. Really if you read between the lines "what do you do?" Translates to "how can you boost my societal standing/ financial situation/what clubs can you get me in." The only point where I have a different opinion from Ashley is that white blonde girls are the ideal there. LA is so mixed! Being a pretty Asian girl in LA got me into a lot of places. And yes I can call myself pretty without being conceited or full or myself. I had a lot of personal problems as a young adult on how to identify myself being a Vietnamese American. Because in the US you can only be one or the other or to Caucasian Americans I'm always the other. My biggest pet peeve was always being asked "where are you from?" And if I told people I'm from LA they would follow with "but no really... Where are you from?" And they literally won't stop until I say what they want to hear. Okay. I'm stopping myself from writing more. The end.

Usually when it comes to people moving to LA, they tend to stay in the realm of people who are also outsiders but with the mentality of being the best out of everyone else, for example Hollywood, Silverlake, Beverly Hills etc. They don't bother to seek out genuine people born and raised here and immerse themselves in cultural areas where the true heart of LA lies. It's like they created their own world of vanity and destruction in our city that is now taking over via gentrification.

I think it's super cool how americans feel free to move wherever they want, to start a whole new life, they don't get so tied to the place where they grown up, to the people they know... It's super unusual for me as an italian and as a super emotional person. I wish I was this mentally free instead of being here complaining about how I'm gonna survive my everyday life after I broke up with my boyfriend after a 4 years long relationship.

Keep in mind that you are getting a very specific perspective, i.e., that of a rich KZbinr. Most Americans don't move as freely as you think they do. Most are tied up with mortgages, children, family, careers, and every bit of sentimentality that anyone would have about where they grew up. Hell, most Americans don't even have passports or have ever really traveled. KZbin =/= real life.

Nataly Del Riego of course I know this is not every American’s typical lifestyle but I also think that overall Americans tend to move and live far from their home town easier than Europeans, or especially Italians, do. I think it’s something in the mindset we have, it’s just different. I don’t think one is better than the other, it’s just fascinates me to see people being able to do something I would struggle to do 😊

As someone who was born and raised in LA i would just like to point out that the toxic energy is only true for people who equate moving to LA with success. All of the KZbinrs and influencers move out here because of the industry not because of the place. LA is my favorite place in the world, but that's because I don't interact with people who only want the lifestyle. Im sure the move out here was hard on ashley because she didn't know people who were in LA for reasons other than connections or the lifestyle. I hope she find more happiness wherever she may find herself in the years to come.

EXACTLY! I was born and raised in Silver Lake and seeing the city change so much for the worst compared to what it was before the height of social media. Now everyone and their mothers move out here for the sake of the hype of the city. Rents went up, traffic got even worst, people obsessed with image and their “clout”. I now live in Seattle and still visit LA a decent amount but I can’t live there anymore.

If we take a closer look, "Hollywood" is what started it all. The term "LA people" really only applied to the transplants, not to those of us who grew up here. KZbin celebs are no different, so it seems..

Agree completely. I love LA so much. I moved there from Michigan. I didn’t move there for fame or fortune or to hobnob with celebrities. I made true genuine friendships/family there. Did I make friends with some super successful people in the industry? Yep, but that was just fate. Not social climbing. A lot of them were native Angelenos though. So maybe there is something to that. From energy of the city, it does feel like there are a lot of lonely people searching which can be a bit sad. It’s really easy to attract genuine people when you are genuine yourself.

You really hit the nail on the head with the independence thing in LA. People there (and really America as a whole compared to other places) are so entrepreneurial and independent, it’s an admirable trait and an exciting energy to be around. But I too have found that when it’s taken to that extreme, people forget that community and being there to support others is just as important. If everyone wants to be exceptional it’s very isolating, everyone is just out there hustling without any time to be there for others. I had that spirit growing up, but eventually decided I’d rather give up my own crazy dreams and support others if it meant I got to live life alongside a strong community of people I care about.

As someone who has lived in NY my whole life and recently moved to SoCal, I can't express how seen this video has made me feel. Idk, maybe it's just homesickness or the pandemic, but I realized how much I wanted to live in NYC only after moving here. Nothing at all against the West coast or the people who live here but it's like you said, it's hard to put my finger on, but I just feel so much more in-tune with how people on the East coast interact.

The version of LA she describes is why I was always so averse to moving there, but when I got a really good job opportunity in LA I went for it anyway. I had an entirely different experience, but I mostly stuck to the Eastside, met a lot of people from different places and also met a lot of and ended up dating an LA native. Not to mention I'm in the medical field so it's a whole different vibe. I felt very welcomed and had a blast. I know that the LA she describes is out there and one a lot of people experience, but it really does depend who you meet. Wish you the best of luck on your move!

I think it's the equivalent of moving to NYC and living in Soho, Noho, Greenwich Village, Chelsea, UWS, or UES. That's where the snobby but still trend-oriented rich young people live. People living in other parts of the city are nothing like that (though much of the rest of Manhattan below central park is for well off but less trendy people).
