They didnt sing this before the show. Floor has always been a fan of Henk, and Henk learned the metal rasp within a few weeks. That is someting of a sin to do in opera singing, which values clearness over all. Henk is the former dutch Phantom in the musical, and Andrew L Webber thought he was one of the greatest.

With this reaction you discovered a new rabbit hole. This show was recorded in April 2019 in the Ibiza resort in Spain, and was then broadcast on Dutch television in August and September, one episode per week, on Saturdays. One episode dedicated to each guest singer plus the last episode of duets, a total of 8 episodes. As a picturesque detail, during this performance (the last of the last episode of the show ...) it was a strong storm - the thunder from the beginning of the song was natural and not a special effect, and you can see at times the rain penetrating the tent .. :) I remember with nostalgia how the Nightwish fan group from Reacticide watched the episode online immediately after the broadcast without translation, most of us without understanding anything (not knowing the language), and in the following days reviewing the episode uploaded by a Dutch fan from discord , Denise H. It happened that in difficult moments, years ago, Nightwish music was with me and supported me emotionally with its extraordinary energy, as well as the wonderful group of people gathered naturally around Ann. I had few opportunities to communicate directly with her, more in YT comments and only a few conversations in discord, but the impression of kindness and understanding received follows me even now. I am glad that I can still carry her memory, and contribute to sustaining this current of feeling that brings people from all over the world together.

I believe this is your first reaction to anything from Beste Zangers. So let's get the big issue out of the way. THIS SHOW IS NOT A COMPETITION. This show is a Dutch show, that gets the best singers from different genres of music in the Netherlands, brings them together, and spends time getting to know them, and for them to know each other. Then with each show, they feature a singer (who sits on on the center couch), and the other singers will sing songs to them that either that featured singer wrote, or has serious meaning in their life. At the time of this season, Floor was relatively unknown in her home country, especially as metal in the Netherlands is not popular (more maligned). So they all came into this with an assumption of what rock and metal are. To them, rock music is more of what you'd hear from, say, Matchbox Twenty. So they were completely floored (pun intended) when Floor came to this show. Henk Poort obviously is an opera singer. Not only that, but he also played Eric (the phantom) in the Dutch production of Phantom of the Opera, and according to Andrew Lloyd Webber, was his favorite phantom. So he knows this song like the back of his hand. Plus, Henk is Floor's idol. She completely fangirled over him on this show. She asked if he would sing this with her, and he agreed, with the promise that he'd get to perform this when Nightwish tours the Netherlands (something they had never done, ever). That concert is still scheduled. Now for the song. If you notice, especially since you reacted to Nightwish performing it at End of an Era, they used the Nightwish arrangement of the song, as it appeared on their album, "Century Child". Plus, this was the second time ever in his life that Henk Poort used distortion in his voice. The first time was when he sang a song for Floor, which was The Sound of Silence. Yeah.. that song, and that version. I'd suggest watching all of Floor's performances on this show, starting with episode 1, where Henk is the featured singer. She sings Vilja Lied (Vilja's Song), which is from the German aria "The Merry Widow". It's a song that Henk's mother (also an opera singer) always sang when he was a child. That's when the Netherlands were introduced to Floor. You'll enjoy that.

Floor is a huge Henk's fan-girl and Henk Poort played the Phantom in the Dutch version of The Phantom of the Opera and Jean Valjean in the first staging of the Dutch version of Les Misérables in the late 1990s. You just wait - Floor and Henk is going to perform it twice on the Nightwish World Tour - in Holland, in "Nightwish style"!!!!!. *** They switched roles - Henk the pro opera singer, went into distortion mode - and Floor - the metal head - stayed in opera mode. They did that to show the world that building bridges between the music genres is easy and should be done more often. When Floor attended this TV show, she was a metal head in all's eyes, and almost unknown - and she fooled them big time: The first show, Henk had been going around teasing all the others with he looked forward to see them do some opera - his style. Floor was the first of all, dressed in leather like a metal head - and sang Vilja Lied ( in German!!) - in opera. The others faces were priceless - she set the barr so sky high - and Henk didn't tease anybody about singing opera any more.... And the next shows, Floor just kept raising the barr. Suddenly everbody got to know who Floor was - she was incredible in the shows. She did 10!!! extra shows afterwards ( sold out in less than 48 hours) - and won a music prize in Holland!!! (building brigde between the genres) Floor Jansen 👍🤘🤘- and new sides of her incredible talent. Her version of Lady Gaga's "Shallow" are mind blowing - but that was all her performances..

Henk Port was the original dutch phantom in the musical and Floor's great role model. With this show her dream has come true. Not just with this song. Henk also sang a song for her and Floor a song for him. Both can be found on youtube. What both of them delivered with this song was just the cherry on the cake. And once again Floor has shown that if she wants, she is at home in any genre. Incidentally, the fact that Floor sang in 5 different languages ​​on this show is also worth mentioning. 8 she can total. The lady is just a goddess. There is simply no other way to describe it. Hey Ryan. That one is a bit of mindbender isn't it? That D6 she holds for 8 seconds at the end never fails to blow me away. They hadn't worked together before this show but they have become friends and Henk has guested with Floor on her solo shows. She also liked that house band so much that she got them to become her band for the shows. Amazing show. And the other singers' performances weren't dead weight neither. PS - After Beste Zangers show, Floor and Henk have sung POTO many times together during the Floor's solo tour.

You guessed correctly. Henk never uses distortion in his vocals. He did it for Floor. Floor did this show to prove to her home country, The Netherlands that metal musicians are very talented. Not just screaming angry maniacs. It worked. before this show, Floor was hardly known in her own native country. During this show she had 3 top hits in The Netherlands with these performances. After the show she is well known and sold out several solo shows in The Netherlands. She still has a big show coming up this fall at AFAS in Amsterdam. Floor took up a funding drive which will allow her to film the show for all of us to experience. Hopefully it will happen before the end on 2021. The pandemic caused it to be rescheduled several times.

Ryan, picking up your reactions after my short holidays. First to Atholonen's story, that is all correct. Being a 65 year old Dutchman I never heard of Floor and Nightwish. After this "2019 Beste Zangers" I spent hours watching Floor and Nightwish to discover their music. I noticed you looked at the "48 hours" video and I see you are enjoining the group as much as I do. A new emotional music world was opened for me, thanks to Floor (Nightwish and Beste Zangers). I wan to repeat the suggestions about "Beste Zangers 2019". especially Shallow. Hello Ryan. Great reaction. I could see on your face you would be speechless. I will give you some more background. Henk Poort is a famous operasinger and musicalartist in the Netherlands and he has played the Phantom for over 600 times in the Netherlands. At that time, Floor has attended as a girl the play with her family and literally became a fangirl of Henk. You could see it in the showseries she has a huge amount of respect for Henk. Henk got to know Floor while he was preparing for this showseries and became a fan of Nightwish and Floor, as he discovered their music. It was Floor's wish to sing the Phantom with Henk and when she asked him to do so, he asked a favor back, to sing it with Floor and Nightwish, as a guest when they visit the Netherlands. Floor agreed, so we will see in November, if it happens. Henk studied on distortion singing just for Floor and just for this showseries. You can imagine Floor's face when she first heard him do that for HER, the fangirl. They didn't have much time, they only did one rehearsal together, Floor, Henk and the band.

I always watch the show in the Netherlands and this year i discovered Floor like a lot of dutchies did and she blew me right of my couch after the show i saw GLS on you tube and there began my addiction for the band Henk played in the Phantom of the opera her in the Netherlands and Floor ws just a litle Floor and she was a fan of Henk Poort and when Floor was asked for this show and this year Henk was in it too Floor said yes, Floor wasn't famous in her own coutry but that changed after this show very quick greetings from the Netherlands

Henk has been doing this more than a hundred times before. He played this part for many years in the Dutch version of the phantom. But the distortion was indeed something he never did. He made an exception for Floor basically to honor her.

Well, just clarifying, Phantom is a musical. It's about an opera house and all the people within it, and so some of that style of singing is used, but it's musical theatre in the end, and so Henk's less round vocals really speak to that, along with Floor's more contemporary sound a lot of the time.

They didn’t have done even a single song together before. Speaking about “Beste Zangers” TV shows: on top of this they regularly did get only one or two rehearsals the same day before they have to perform the song live that same evening. And that’s also the case for the show’s supported session band (Marcel Fisher Band)

Hi Ryan, Henk was a big influence on Floor as a teenager, she really was "Fangirling" as you noticed. Henk was the Dutch Phantom, Floor knew of Nightwish doing this with Tarja, bringing them together was amazing. The look on Floors face when Henk goes raspy growl :) "Lekker" is nice, yummy, enticing...

When ever you leave your mouse cursor on the User Interface of the YT window (or basically when ever the interface is shown) you get horrible frame rate drop outs etc... Try to remember not to do that :)

Hi, I didn't like this version compared to Marko and Tarja's version at first, because I lacked rock and metal and I was bothered by the TV show and all the jumping and shouting of the audience. Later I radically changed my mind, because if you focus only on those two and listen exclusively to the voices of Floor and Henk, it's hard to say which version is better. Both are so amazing yet completely different.
