Nice video! Giving me a craving for Ethiopian rn... That said, I feel I both agree and disagree with the underlying premise here. I do agree that veg food in the West seems more of a 'reaction' to the culture than part of the culture in and of itself, but I think you might be underplaying how good mock meat can be. Vegetarian food in Vietnam, like China, is full of mock meat... you can make lots of delicious things with tofu and seitan. I feel like there's this idea swirling around out there that was popularized by Bourdain that 'meat is meat and veg is veg and ne'er the two shall mix'. That somehow mock meat's intrinsically bad because it's "trying to be meat". But being alchemical with food - altering shapes, forms, etc - is pretty foundational to cuisine itself. Veg food in the West is mediocre because the culture of vegetarian food simply hasn't been around very long - India's had, like, a 3000 year head start and China a 2000 year one. And yet, the tradition still *is* undeniably getting tastier in the west by the year.
@BestEverFoodReviewShow3 жыл бұрын
Tofu is not mock meat.
@markw12473 жыл бұрын
@@BestEverFoodReviewShow It is something used in place of meat, so perhaps not "mock" meat per se, but certainly a meat alternative.
@Unreg1sterdUser3 жыл бұрын
I think Mark has a good point. Asian meat substitutes like mock duck (and the gluten puff based one), paneer, saitan etc. aren't pretending to be imitations of meat. Instead, their name more reflects the purpose they have in a dish. True imitation meat like tofurky or impossible foods are really only popular in the west.

Oh man Chinese Cooking Demystified and Best Ever Food Review Show in one comment thread, what a small world. I feel like the tradition element is what's key here. People in Asia know exactly how to make tofu, paneer, etc taste good in and of itself as the central component of a dish. Westerners don't have that tradition, so they over-complicate things by putting those same products through 50 different preparation steps with 20 ingredients to approximate the exact texture and flavor of meat, and end up with a bizarre mess. And yes I know true imitation meat exists in Asia too, but I'm willing to bet these are pretty niche products and vastly more people eat the traditional vegetarian dishes.

Kelly is SO ADORABLE. That out of the way, I love love LOVE Ethiopian and Indian food whether it's vegetarian or not for all the flavors, which practically slap you in the face and demand you notice them with every bite. I'm jonesing for it now! Ethiopian food in particular has my heart in a grip that will never ever let go. If I had to go vegetarian, it would be Indian and Ethiopian food all day every day, because yes, American vegetarian and vegan food is horrible. It's bland and lifeless and in general just awful. Hence its bad reputation among non-vegetarians. That and soy (and IPAs) is not good for men in large doses, it's been scientifically proven--or so I hear, anyway. No thank you.

Nigerian food is also mostly vegetarian and vegan. We only add animal products like fish, meat or chicken afterwards to the soups to complement the food. But if we don't add them the soups, swallows, rice etc are 100% vegan. We even have our own hamburger in which the patty is called akara (bean cake) so no meat at all and all ingredients are organic plant based, including the oil we use which is palm oil.

Interesting, I'm from the Caribbean and we have a vegetarian fried "meat"ball made from beans and spices, we call them akara balls. I wonder if the name originated in Nigeria.

This made me so hungry, the food looks absolutely amazing and I just got a huge graving especially for the Ethiopian food since I've never had it before. I've been a vegetarian my whole life and started preferring vegan food about 5 years ago (still occasionally eat dairy products tho if there is no other option). And I can definently see the problem with a lot of western veg food. We should appreciate vegetables as they are and create different flavours with them instead of imitating meat. This is just one example, but vegan cheese is absolutely terrible 95% of the time and I don't understand why people are so obsessed with it when you can have amazing stuff like hummus, tahini etc instead on top of your bread. Or why try to make a vegan "steak" if you can use many different spices to cook some tofu and make it taste many times better than any veg or non-veg steak?

The energy of this episode is amazing!!! The foods look and FEEL good to my viewing eyes and heart. (No vibration of violence or the suffering of the animals on the plate.) The owner of the restaurant reminds me of the owner of Au Lac (Vietnamese raw vegan/vegan restaurant in Orange County and LA) who said the same thing: "If we all eat like this, the world would be a much more loving and peaceful place." Her energy is beautiful, and she did win my heart.
