I think many of the issues brought up with this Remake stems from an exclusively consumer perspective (reasonably so as that's what we are) but somewhat dismisses the creator perspective. Simply put, spending thousands of hours across years to produce the exact same product/designs as the original would be quite boring, and Kitase himself stated several years ago he was unsure he would have the motivation to undergo such a massive task as a Remake if everything were simply the same. Changes allows for the artists to breath new life into the world, giving satisfaction and thus continued motivation to their work. Nice video by the way.

Wild idea: if you reimagine an existing product and change the way it plays, why not make it an alternate story instead? FFVII - Alter. That way it doesn't interfere with the original artistic vision and the way it was remembered. You get to explore different facets of existing characters without interfering with them, and a fresh look at an old concept. I think there's a Star Trek episode about that.

Further, the idea of not interfering "with the original artistic vision" is an opinion that ignores both: a) that the limitations on the technology of the time arguably reduced the accuracy of the vision (there are always things that hit the cutting room floor at some point, throughout the process of development, for any variety of reasons), and b) the artist's right to revise his vision at any time-up to and including ruining it outright-regardless of fan feelings (to be fair, this goes both ways, as putting a piece of art out allows people to make it their own to an extent, but that extent _doesn't_ include suggesting that the artist is obligated to call their own creation by another name because some delicate flowers get upset by the use of the same one). If fans of the original game can't bear the changes shown in the remake, that's just fine-they're entitled to their opinion. Fortunately, they aren't being forced to buy or play it, and are well within their rights to completely ignore its existence in favor of their beloved original; it's a good game and well worth playing more than once. But if they truly can't stand the remake and aren't just putting on airs because they think it makes them sound like "true fans," then they should get busy ignoring it rather than contribute to the hype by making videos about non-issues with the sole goal of cultivating resentment in the most sensational ways they can dream up.

It is remade based on adding cut content and fleshing out story pieces, such as yffie and vincent not being optional but part of the story proper. From a color theory perspective, the new version has so much more black in the model, that black is the dominant color whereas originally Tifa had a more inviting cinnamon red/brown color design because of the more 1:1 ratio of brown, black and red (diagram at 10:20 shows the color distribution, 20:41).

Tifa's honkers are certainly smaller than some of the original PS1-era models and a lot of the concept art, sure. But they don't seem particularly smaller than her Advent Children or Dissidia appearances to me, so I don't see any problem with it. I actually prefer remakes to be different. I never want a remake to replace the original, this way the games can be enjoyed for different reasons. You’re right that remakes are pointless, but if they happen I would rather them make changes so that I can always recommend playing the original. I know it’s a little paradoxical since, “what is a point of the remake then?”

You make a good point but when it starts to change major story events and character designs then I feel like it kind of disrespects the original and fans. Artist here her silhouette is very similar to the original design. I agree with the bra thing buuuuut I see one other reason they would use the bra. They could be using it to make her top and boobs distinct from her skin for fear of some dude in a board room thinking she’s like topless without nips or something. They’re playing it extra safe to play nice with Sony who is currently being very vocal about wanting to tone down on anything potentially racy. I generally agree with most of your points though. Good video solid 9/10.

That's a bit of a stretch though, a white shirt on flesh sticks out like a sore thumb. Maybe if the shirt just had a black outline I could see that point but that isn't the case. My personal theory is that they didn't want to program jiggle physics in the game and by having the sports bra be as obvious as it is, people won't question it, so they shrink the shirt, expand the bra, and call it a day.

Her new design looks really busy and the leggings really defeat the whole sports look. Consider this: Tifa is being conscious about her health. I love the original. The original will always have special place in my heart and I'm glad the new doesn't replace it in stuff like Dissidia. But I also love the new design, especially how the sports bra creates a nice outline around the white top. The big exception is stockings. I think they've done a good job in keeping everything else close enough to the original, but the stockings deviate a bit too much from that. But I guess that's the glass half full take. Celebrating what remains, relieved to avoid another Advent Children.

glad to see more content from you, nate :) you always argue your point well in videos, but i feel like you would benefit from putting a bit more time into organizing your information and making it more concise. for example, i think the mock q and a portion could have been consolidated into the first section, addressing one issue at one time and then moving on to the next one. this will keep you from feeling the need to jump back to points youve already made. you probably do these videos mostly off-the-cuff, which definitely has its benefits, but a bit of prep-work could help without unnecessarily dragging the project. one process could be putting down your initial thoughts, quickly organizing them by topics with supporting evidence, then making the final video. i dont have insight into your creative process, but i think you can tailor this process to be fast enough to make the extra work worth it. after all, efficiency is pretty on brand for the best guy ever :) i hope my suggestions provide some insight and that this advice doesnt seem to be spoon-feeding or ill-hearted. youve been killing it lately, and im excited to see what you do with your content in the future :)

Dude, I’m sry you lost me at the sephirith comment. Sephirith literally haunted cloud in the og, they’re just depicting that visually. If he was physically there I’d agree, but this is simply just a manifestation jenova/his broken psychee. It’s not literally the jenova sephirith you chase to the north cave. The first game is entirely Midgar, they’re simply showing him early, so hes more introduced to the plot, but not changing when he actually appears. He’s a ghost, the strong sephiroth will that haunts clouds mind. Or based on the imagery and dialogue, a weird mixture of zack memories, Nibelheim burning and possibly jenova in his mind. If you’d prefer the screen cut to blank and white text to say “I’m therightful heir to the planet”, then you’re one of those ppl who cannot enjoy this game because any changes will be “revisionist history”. The thing is ffvii was one self contained game, seeing as this game is just Midgar, sephiroth being seen visually in some way without actually been there is fine. He’s still far off and looming, he’s still in the distance, he’s playing the exact same role here he did in the original at this point. We just see him, and that’s because part 2 won’t come out till 2024, we all know what sephirith looks like, and this just is affirming he has a powerful hold on cloud, which I see as acceptable given the new format. 14:51 Nomura designed Cloud's Smash Bros. appearance(s), not a third party. At the end of the day, Nomura's the one who originally designed these characters, so I think it's well within his right as an artist to modify their designs in any way he sees fit. I like Tifa's original design. I like Tifa's AC design. I like Tifa's Remake design. They're all good and they all fit their respective works.

The FF7 remake is a re-imagining, I remember Nomura stressing this point. I also remember him saying that the original game still exists and that the remake wouldn't be replacing it.

I still don't get your issue with a slight remix in character design. My favourite FF is probably 9 since I played it as a kid, I wouldn't be particularly bothered if they took out Garnets skin tight bodysuit as much as I love it - the design didn't even make sense in the game(all of the other nobels and the queen wear your regular ass court 18th century attire) it's that skimpy clothes are easier to model/animate than a multi layered princess dress (garnet wears one at some point, but it has no battle animations), similarly Tifa's body type doesn't really seem like that of a martial artist - I could see them tweaking the design to fit more closely with the motion capture they're using.

When your someone who's seen BAD redesigns in other series, this isn't that big a deal. I mean, look at things like Sonic Boom, Crash from the Wii era, Ghostly Adventures Pac-Man, '06 Dr. Eggman, reboot Spyro, etc. Now a sports bra and stockings doesn't seem so bad.

This is so far the best critique of the new Tifa that I've seen. Although I do disagree with some things you've said, overall, there is absolutely no contest of which version is better. Tifa's classic outfit was already perfect the way it was; practicality doesn't make it better. At this point, all I care about is her classic outfit being optional in the remake. Sure, it might be DLC, but at the same time, if Insomniac can implement the Sam Raimi suit in the Spider-man game for free, then I don't see why Square can't do the same.

My view: I like the new design in the sense that there's nothing wrong with it in itself, however I find it unfortunate that the new model is somewhat different. The key thing to keep in mind is that if it wasn't a remake then no one would care because it would be her original appearance. On the other hand, I don't want any of the other characters to be changed either, such as Cloud becoming taller or Aerith becoming larger. I suppose the key problem is that some people just don't like change, but some do. Although my suggested solution is just add an unlockable alternative classic costume you can get through only gameplay.

So I've been reading through the comments and there is a common theme that I want to respond to. Yes, you are all correct, the remake does not rewrite the original. However, no one seems to bring up the original PS1 graphics. FF7's PS1 graphics are very polygonic and ugly whereas the remakes graphics are in modern HD. Fans of FF7 wanted to experience everything they loved about the original in HD for many years, including Tifa. And because for whatever reason Square chose not to be faithful to Tifa's classic outfit as possible, many fans are disappointed that they cannot play as the Tifa they know and love in the remake. Yes, Dissidia NT now has the classic Tifa, but that is another issue. Dissidia NT is a mediocre fighting game and is not a traditional Final Fantasy game at all. No one wants the classic Tifa to only be available to play in a mediocre fighting game. None of these should be hard to understand.

I agree almost completely. There isn't a whole lot of reason behind it. I think that the real reason is fear of biased game journals giving it bad reviews, which they're going to do anyway. I hate it when companies try to make everyone happy since it's impossible, because in the end they just make no one happy.

I just saw it as an artist wanting to update old designs like cloud and Barret minor updates. Nomora doesn't rely on zippers and belts anymore and I feel he's just trying to correct his past with what he's learned whereas third party depiction like smash will always respect the original design.
