I actually don't mind the 2001 Simon redesign. It fits in well with the other gorgeous painting of Kojima whilst retaining the barbaric-ness that Simon's always had. The castlevania judgment is really bad, though.

Yea. I think the style of judgement if it was just illustrative and 2D would have probably done alright. But translating Iga’s preference for how things aesthetically looked since SotN and the GBA games into 3d...eh. The gothic style and architecture of the series was what really gave the series its visual depth; the overt anime stylization of some games in the series was just a narrative twist like a cherry on top a sundae. And even then, the last canon game to really stay the course of a more solid visual narrative was Order of Ecclesia. The melancholy presentation of Sotn, the GBA titles, and OoE more easily expanded upon the world of Castlevania. The direction of the 3d games in general didn’t really reflect well the root appeal of the series. It was just edgy anime, rather than remaining faithful to being a twist on the classic horror genre.

Flaming Lords of Shadow as a game I’m passive about. But the art for it - Damn. The most interesting and gorgeous concept art and illustration I’ve seen for a game. The art was fantastic for the rebooted series and was what held things together, not the story, I think. The other 3d Castlevanias pre reboot were just not very interesting in the visual category.

He just wears green and or blue (depending on if you're looking at the in game sprite or the official art) breastplate and has brown hair. It feels too similar to his NES design. I personally like the Chronicles design because it gives Simon a unique flair, he might not be as burly and barbaric, but I can live with that if it means he can be a little bit more visually distinct.

Alex683 Drawn out written post here, but I find this stuff about pacing and narratives in games interesting. The manliness factor to me is actually really cool, and kind of establishes Simon as that one badass Belmont who vanquished Dracula twice in his lifetime. You don’t mess with Simon, haha! He vanquishes the darkness! I also think he just better carries the weight of his whole series over Richter. As far as the soft anime feel over arching Smash Ultimate, there’s more embellishment and highlighted mood in terms of color put onto things that adopt an appeal of slight “femininity”. What I mean I guess is stuff that looks visually inviting and comfortable within uniformity, rather than something striking or that sets a pace for being overtly energetic. Simon as a singular character more than less would probably be taken as almost feeling out of place in that surrounding mood in Smash’s environment - likewise Snake - in virtue of just his core traits. Captain Falcon and Bayonetta are characters who have maintained being a certain exception, since they are so flamboyant and outrageous in animation and demeanor, that they get away with their obvious overemphasized appearances. The pace of the Smash Ultimate if it’s to echo a bit of those expressed feminine qualities also follows that mood of not just being visually beautiful, but while being mechanically faster than its predecessor it’s still not overly so. The mechanics match the pace and presentation of the game as something that feels confident within its own stride (it’s probably a neutral balance of sorts in all honesty). Smash Melee in contrast of appeal is a lot more “masculine”, in the pace and presentation it sets. It takes 64’s quirky comicbook look and reestablishes it in a more serious fashion with characters that have defined and lean muscular tones of anatomy. Just look at something as simple as how the broadness of many a character’s shoulders in that game are emphasized. In gameplay and character action, all of that visual tension in most of Melee’s characters when their in idle bursts forth whenever there’s a dash or move - and probably the reason the slow moves were at times mechanically too slow in that game were to affectively dramatize a carrying over of that bottled tension into blows baring that suggestion of raw force and energy. Looking at Simon originally from his first games shows he’s always been a confident, and if in the same breath as that word, a clearly masculine character as an archetypal product of his time. Less because of familiar social norms and more because of what suited the design of his games I think. If you’re playing something that is genuinely difficult, well you might as well be one tough bastard. Castlevania’s enemies also had a complimentary yet mirror-twist of that same overbearing look and it worked visually to establish a variety of enemies as something to conquer. As the player you were “the holy knight (with a whip) fighting foreboding and impossible monstrosities of evil. Their place of residence was a twisted castle of ornate, gothic feminine beauty (which happened to be actually suitable for the lore of Dracula’s history since he was widowed to two late wives). As far as Castlevania itself, I think the manner in how it developed opened up the door to have hyper feminine as well as masculine archetypes in leading role: The gothic aesthetic was only retained if not mist certainly enhanced with each 2d installment of the series, while the monsters simultaneously became all the more gruesome and grotesque. Dracula I think ended up successfully embodying a representative picture of mankind which was completely and totally warped and perverted. Against a character like that? Sure, hyper emphasize your character with having strong masculine traits, whether male (Simon) or female (Shanoa in some ways). Or emphasize qualities that appear feminine through a melancholy aesthetic, which is certainly true of Alucard and probably Soma as second to him (if you look at the art for him especially in the gba game). Smash brothers as a series just doesn’t establish that kind of dark-fantasy lite spectrum. TLDR; Simon isn’t a full package without Dracula and his castle in-toe for contextual reasons. Richter was designed in an anime look to begin with, so the ease of his transition into the look of Ultimate just in terms of appearance is probably way more smooth and complimentary in style.

@@RobertRhoades2 Disney owns Sora, so Sora would be a Disney rep, If Nintendo is choosing the DLC characters, then they would choose the ones that would benefit them. The only two SE characters that would benefit Nintendo are Mallow and Geno. Nintendo of America made that tweet earlier this year "Are you team Mallow or team Geno?" This makes it clear that Nintendo hasn't forgotten about Geno. Super Mario RPG was on the SNES Classic, and Geno had a Mii costume in Smash 4. The only other Square Enix character to get a Mii costume in Smash 4 was Chocobo, but since Final Fantasy still only has two music tracks, the director of the tracks is not affiliated with Square Enix anymore, and the music tracks are very expensive, it is very unlikely that we will get another FF rep. Neither Kingdom Hearts nor Dragon Quest received any representation in a Smash game before Ultimate. The fact that spirits do not deconfirm characters and Geno is not a spirit, but rather a battle icon/token, means that Sakurai and Nintendo have the rights to Geno
