Glad you covered the too hot aspect. Electric RC car racers have been using temp guns for years. 140F is a good high temp mark for electric motors.
@JoshuaBardwell7 жыл бұрын
In my experience, a temp gun is tricky to use. Depending on exactly where you point it, it can read very differently. The temp I'm most concerned about is the temp of the windings because that's what will burn (the enamel, specifically). I'm not convinced that temping the bell is the most reliable way of doing it. But then again I guess if you are touching the bell with your fingers, you're temping the bell...
@rcwck7 жыл бұрын
With a temp gun you shoot at lotsa different locations and soon you learn the hottest spots. On an outrunner motor it's quite easy to shoot the windings and the windings appear to be the hottest spot. On inrunner motors as rc cars use it's almost impossible to temp check the windings accurately. The wire coatings burn at a much higher temp that 140F. I find that in racing rc cars that the power drops as the temp increases over that 140F mark. The decrease in performance is noticeable and assume it comes from the heat decreasing the magnetic field and increasing the IR on the motor.

I found the dynamic filter to be very useful. Now can I use any kind of prop I want to. before I could only use some Cyclones or high pitched racecraft. I couldn't use HQ 5043s or 5040s. my Motors would just have this vibration. I could see the props vibrating when they were idling. But now it's like night and day I turned it off and on to make sure its was helping. Why do I have to have this for my quad to handle lightweight props with less pitch? Seems to me like you should just be turned on at default

Just a dumb idea, feel free to ignore... To the best of your knowledge, has anyone ever put a quad in a vacuum chamber and measured the the actual noise the quad produces? You said something a while ago that got me on to this idea, I don't remember what. The end idea is something like an auto tune, call it freak-out mode. You fly the quad to a relatively high altitude like 200 to 250 ft then activate. The Quan would freak out for a second or two then return to normal flight. What it would be doing is measuring all the nose that it can actually here, then it would set the filters to ignore everything it just heard. ...?

Hey Joshua, has anyone ever asked you about high camera angle and yaw, Picture you are flying a quad in a straight line with high camera angle, and you want to do a quick turn around rolling would work better but wouldn't it be nice if you could use yaw command to do this? i find myself moving the camera in a U pattern, having it adaptable with the pitch of the aircraft might be nice, Tell me what you think. because if I yaw, the quad just spins in the direction that I'm heading in, not turning me around, I think the controls could be better setup that way IMO

Just to clarify, when adjusting on the filter page and you change from biquad to PT1. Is this step one as in now test your quad for hot motors or is removal of the the first notch filter the time for first test. Just as i am going to be testing in the field so adjustments will have to be made on the bench prior to each flight.

Mid throttle oscillations are seldom caused by PID gains. You need to soft mount your FC or just leave the filters alone.

Check my "Alien vs. Chameleon" PID Tuning videos to see exactly how I do it. It's a bit of a back and forth. After P and I are mostly correct, then I try disabling the other filters as part of D tuning.

FOR ME VERY IMPORTANT QUESTIONS: - What is faster (less deplay)? 1 to 2 static gyro notch filter OR just dynamic notch? - What's the need of enabling static notch filter(s) if dynamic is on? Should the dynamic filter not cover the static parts as well? So far, I have the best experience with my Martian II frame + 2205 2300kV motors to have just Gyro Notch 1 (245 Hz center) and D-Term Notch on (and of course PT1). Dynamic Notch just added propwash back again. My other DALRC X215 frame + same motors is more tricky. Here I need Gyro Notch 1+2 and D-Term-Notch to be on. And since dynamic notch is out this is on, too. This all helped a lot to for better overall flight performance.
@JoshuaBardwell7 жыл бұрын
Dynamic notch latency is impossible to generalize. Its width is dynamic. So its latency changes.
@sebastiannobody11427 жыл бұрын
But it must be more as a scan of the gyro raw data is needed. The static filters are fixed manually, thus no analysis needed. So in my understanding its faster to work with a static filter. If you crash a lot or fly at different altitudes or temperatures the dynamic filter is more handy. And what about using static on top of dynamic? Is it usefull?

How about switching the dterm notch for biquad dterm lpf ? that way the dynamic can just notch the particularly noisy parts and not mute potentially useful data.
@JoshuaBardwell7 жыл бұрын
I would never, ever suggest turning off the d term lowpass. Much too high a risk of burned motors.
@MrStevegibb7 жыл бұрын
Erm no I meant I think it would be better to disable all the notches before changing the LPF from biquad to pt1. My reasoning for this is that notches are very aggressive at there center frequency and for that reason need to be set very precisely or you could end up loosing useful information.

@Coreycry7 жыл бұрын
You can modify the nature of the dynamism, how it's allowed to operate in the time. For instance, discarding certain frequencies at specific states.
@JoshuaBardwell6 жыл бұрын
You aren't really tuning the dynamic filter, which tunes itself as you expect. You're really tuning the static filters, which interact with the dynamic filter.

Right so why do we need any static filters if there are dynamic ones. Always did my head in :-)

I sometimes wonder if racing is the endgame of quadcopters? I admit I just came into this hobby, but the amount of people focused on racing vs long range or programming or whatever, is quite significant. Is there no such thing as an "all-round" or AIO quad?
@VilleF1N7 жыл бұрын
Every freestyle quad could be described as AIO. They usually have enough power for racing at low to medium levels maybe even at high level, they can be used for long range with TBS Crossfire and bigger battery, altho i'd suggest lower Kv motors and 6" build for more range at a cost of punch out power and top speed. Of course a dedicated build for each purpose is always going to do better, but if you don't know what exactly you wanna do or can't afford to build more than 1 quad, then a freestyle build is the option to go with.
@imemyself28207 жыл бұрын
Thanks for replying so fast, VilleF1N. It's just, freestyle and racing quads are rarely carrying features like sensors, autonomous functions etc they are very simple racers.
@VilleF1N7 жыл бұрын
True enough. There just isn't much point in having sensors on these kinds of quads. For one thing, they add weight and when you add autonomy to them, it takes the fun out of them. But DJI to the rescue for those who want their quad to basically fly it self while you just look at the pretty camera feed. That said, there are GPS and sonar modules designed for small quads like what we fly and Betaflight even supports them. You just have to find a bigger frame to fit all that stuff into, like ImpulseRC Alien or even Lumenier QAV-R would most likely do the job.

Does enabling Dynamic Filter affect flight characteristics? Latency I suppose, but more the feel?
@JoshuaBardwell5 жыл бұрын
The dynamic filter should be the last one you turn off when trying to reduce latency and improve direct flight feel. Well, actually, you should never turn it off. If ou turn off all the other filters and manage to not smoke your motors, you'll have hardly any latency. If you then turn off your dynamic filter, you'll probably smoke your motors.
@frankyoualot5 жыл бұрын
This is a so important because I turned it off for testing and yes, super hot motors. 1106-6000kv motors seem to run hot anyhow so I've been trying to cool them off - the screws are super hot, and I watched your vid about hot motors and there is no continuity happening. Thank you so much P.S. A flight controller seems like an analog noise controller the more I learn about filtering!

I am having issue of hot motors in BF 4.0.3 should I turn it to PT1 by default it is biquad?
@TimeFadesMemoryLasts5 жыл бұрын
You can try lowering your D-term first. In BF4 raising and lowering the D-term has a more dramatic effect than in earlier versions. If you still get hot motors try lowering the D-term Low Pass Filter. I have it set to 200Hz but try 100Hz or 50Hz as well. You will get more vibrations but your motors will stay cooler.

Lower the value of which number? The way the notch works, simply lowering the frequency value will not have the effect you are looking for. It's not like a lowpass filter where raising or lowering the value controls the amount of filtering.

Weird question no relationship to video, do u think that running sbus with only 8 channels would have less latency than 16? I've been curious on this for a while, I can't tell when changing on x9d
@VilleF1N7 жыл бұрын
I've been wondering the same as well. I have done some tests, but the only big difference im noticing is when im tuning the RC Interpolation. The difference is that when i have the Taranis in D8 mode i can use value of 13 for RC Interpolation and get a clean RC curve. But, when i set my Taranis to D16 however, i can't get the RC curve clean no matter which value i use(JB has a video on how to tune RC Interpolation, if im not making any sense). I suppose there is some slight difference in feel with D8 mode and as i understand it, it's slightly faster than D16 mode. So it does make sense that i'd feel my quad respond slightly faster in D8 mode.
@JoshuaBardwell7 жыл бұрын
+Danger Davefpv yes it has less latency.

Joshua Bardwell well that's good to know, I know it's not dramatically different and I've even thought about the tbs crossfire I flew a crossfire and seemed like longer range the latency was way better in same area where I had xm+ it seemed more responsive like I was connected,now longer range if u listen to quad it seems like there is delay but it is delay with sound traveling

What if I have all three filters disabled but did not activate dynamic notchfiltering in config? Seems like that is what I have been doing, is this complete nonsense or was it like this in earlier versions. And does it make a differnece in performance?
@JoshuaBardwell7 жыл бұрын
If you do that, you will have lower latency and less filtering. The main risk is that a sudden change in vibration (like a bent or broken prop) will burn a motor. The dynamic filter can respond to this, but the static filters can't.
@MsKoffeinjunky7 жыл бұрын
Wow answered by the master himself ;). Your videos helped me soo much over the last couple of years, thanks alot! So if I understand this right, it is riskier but could perform better in theorie. Running 8k 4k dshot600 acc and everything i dont need disabled on a Omnibus F3 Cpu load on my bench only 17% I had some rolls of death after fast flips with two of my quads but were pretty sure, until now, this was due to battery sag because the fc rebooted after the crash and it did not happen with a fresh battery. I also flew back to me with one prop missing a blade, bad vibrations but kept it in the air. How many more filters ( or layers of filtering) are there after I disabled the three filters you mentioned in your video? I dont want to go too deep into the topic but I had one semester about feedback control systems and a vague understanding what is going on there, and for quads I sadly just did what people like you suggested without understanding much. Is there a nice source to read into it other than bori`s rcforum posts, something more visual?
@JoshuaBardwell7 жыл бұрын
Honestly the FC should never reboot from battery sag. How low does the battery sag, worst case? 9 volts? This is a completely totally destroyed 4S battery but it is still more than enough to keep the FC's 5v regulator alive. If the FC is rebooting due to brown-out, then the regulator on the FC is defective or badly designed in my opinion. These are all of the filters that there are.
@MsKoffeinjunky7 жыл бұрын
It most of the times happend on my small 95mm build.1105 motors and 2 inch props, flies like a charm. Punchouts drop it to 6.2V on 2S. On 3s the sag is not as pronounced. And deathrolls only happened if I use full 1200deg/s rollrate. Maybe a related topic: Do you set motor max value to 2000 in blheli and bf for dshot escs? Some time ago you had to leave some room for the fc to act around 1970 if Im not mixing up stuff now (put the hobby on freeze over last winter and maybe missed a bit when catching up)

Joshua Bardwell yep, i watched and i did every thing that you said, and nothing. I check every part of the quad twice and all is ok. With soft mount i reduce the hot in 30% maybe. But it’s not enough

Dont think this is for me personally, I fly Dal props which easily survive crashes but xan get bent out of shape...and I typically dont bother changes props till they are nearly origami or bent back so many times Im not even sure what they looked like to begin with. I must ask tho, what is th correlation between how the FC 'sees' oscillation? For instance, when PID tuning, this is a response to error, but at what point is the FC able to recognise those errors to be oscillation as opposed to just a series or error points?
@ASJC277 жыл бұрын
I think this is actually an argument in favor of using dynamic filter. It responds to changes in vibration frequencies so it is very good if you fly with damaged props as it will adapt to that. In my experience ever since I started using dynamic filter I can keep flying with damage that previously was too much.
@JoshuaBardwell7 жыл бұрын
The FC never "sees" oscillation. It just sees and tries to correct for error, regardless of type or cause.
@MrSutekii7 жыл бұрын
Joshua Bardwell that being the case, how does it know at what frequency to ignore oscillations?
@vinnnocc7 жыл бұрын
since 3.3 is out do we still run PT1 or biquad?
@JoshuaBardwell7 жыл бұрын
Nothing has changed about this advice. And 3.3. is not out. It's RC1 for gosh sakes. It'll be a month and at least one MAJOR feature revision before they actually release it, if history is any guide.

SIDE QUESTION: What's the best setting for a F4 FC? 8K/8K or old school ratio -> 8k/4k ?!?!?
@adamk.39467 жыл бұрын
Sebastian Nobody 8k/8k works great with F4 boards
@sebastiannobody11427 жыл бұрын
I know. But is the final result in PID loop maybe better if you use that 1/2 ratio or is this an rule of the past now?
@adamk.39467 жыл бұрын
Sebastian Nobody I find that 8k/8k works best for me when comparing to 8k/4k or 4k/4k. Probably going to be different for others but that's my experience!
@fuzzwad50497 жыл бұрын
I use 16k/8k with DShot 1200 and dynamic filtering. No issues on my end.

What the point to keep gyro notches on? Wont they interfere with dynamically set notches?
@JoshuaBardwell7 жыл бұрын
No, not at all. They are complimentary.
@MrBirdshell6667 жыл бұрын
Joshua Bardwell, how excactly? Please explain
@wheelhaus3037 жыл бұрын
Notch filters are static, they attenuate a frequency range you choose. The dynamic filter analyzes the data and seeks out the frequency with the highest noise and attenuates accordingly. If a notch filter is already set up properly (via black box freq logs and manual settings) then the dynamic filter can only see what’s left, and then seeks out whatever noise is the loudest. If your noise levels are really low after tuning filters manually, then the dynamic filter may actually be unnecessary. All filtering requires processing time, so less filtering improves the immediacy of flight control, but the additional filters do not really “interfere” with each other as you suspect. Only drawback is very slight delay to control, maybe imperceptible to some/most. As far as overall best latency performance I suspect PT1 manually set up notch filtering is the king as it uses the least processing, but takes a lot more work than the one-click dynamic filter. Im still learning this as well.
@MrBirdshell6667 жыл бұрын
Dave Wheeler so, the dynamic filter is applied after notch filters? I thought othervise...
@wheelhaus3037 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure which priority/order things are processed, that's a good point. The dynamic filter likely needs more aggregate data to determine where to apply attenuation, so I would assume it is processed in an entirely separate way than the normal notch filter. I am simply making the assumption, I'm not sure how it's programmed.

Does "as fast as you want" on f4 and f7 include 16k or 32k?

Betaflight 4.0 has dropped support for gyro sampling over 8k, so the question is moot :-)

@@JoshuaBardwell interesting thank you. And thank you for your prompt reply. I'm in the middle of trying to learn about filtering to dial in an 8inch 2-blade prop camera platform for filming a friend's wedding and strolled on to this video while trying to understand the available band pass filters. I did a tune session earlier to remove seemingly P-wobble tune issues in a Holybro Kakute f7 board that has been hard-mounted to the frame. As I drove home I asked myself "why doesn't it just isolate the signals associated with the motor speeds it outputs". Seems like someone already had that though. Is the dynamic filter available only on 4.0 then?
@benjaminwinston41855 жыл бұрын
It wasn't P-wobble. I reduced the P to nearly nothing (having taken D down a lot in a prior session). It's definitely frame noise. At one point I had to land with incredible slop (if they could get a washing machine to fly, I could almost land it.. ;) ) but changing values I didn't quite understand via the OSD menu for general filtering seemed to improve things. I'm downloading the GoPro footage to see if it confirms my suspicions about the filtering improving the wobble.

Have you heard of anyone having a problem with their betaflight f4 board not arming and if so do you know what the problem was ?
@1337flite7 жыл бұрын
If you have an OSD turn on "warnings" in the OSD it will tell you at least some of the time what the issue. E.g. I've seen "nogyro" or "noprearm" before. You can also try to arm while attached to USB (take off your props) and then go into the CLI and type status. There's a code in the output. Theres a page on the Betaflight github wiki that tells you what the codes mean. github.com/betaflight/betaflight/wiki/Arming-Sequence-&-Safety

What would happen if you would stick on BIQUAD and simply switch off the filters below ?
@JoshuaBardwell7 жыл бұрын
+Gamer Foo going to PT1 has a larger positive effect. Also if your motors get hot when going to biquad then you probably shouldn't try turning off the notches.
@gamerfoo82877 жыл бұрын
On 4 out of 5 quads following your instructions and disabling all 3 notch filters works fine for me without the motors getting hot. I have one quad where I can only disable the first 2 notch filters on PT1 and afterwards the motors run twitchy and hot. On this particular quad leaving BIQUAD and disabling all 3 notch filters seems to give me better results. No idea why. The build that is behaving a bit strange is using a Kakute F4 on the latest betaflight version and an racestar 4 in 1 running the most current Heli-S firmware with DSHOT 600

Déjà vu I swear you already made a video about this because I watched it lol that’s how I learned what to do with dynamic filtering. What would the FPV world do with out JB? The thought is terrifying 👍

You are not wrong, I watched the same video. It's the one where he FIRST announced the Betaflight 3.2 availability in the "RC" stages. if it wasn't the first one, it was the second one, I watched the same video as you because I couldn't quite remember which notches to "zero" out, as I thought there were more than 2 or 3 to set to zero for full functionality. lol

Jb i think you already explained this in previous vids. And this still doesnt say a thing about tuning the dynamic filter.
@JoshuaBardwell7 жыл бұрын
+Danny Mars this is how you do it. There is no "tuning" of the filter itself. That's why it's dynamic. It tunes itself. The only tuning is, what other filters can or can't you disable.
@KmanRuffian7 жыл бұрын
Joshua I think you really should come up with a better description of "How hot is too hot?" There is a great deal of variability in what people perceive as "too hot to keep your fingers on the motors..." I think to be scientific about it you should just figure out a temperature that goes along with this statement so that those of us with infrared thermometers can check motor temps. Just my two cents. Thanks as always for the great content, in addition to these two cents I also just became one of your Patrons...
@EliasLabordus7 жыл бұрын
It's more a rule of thumb. The absolute temperatures would depend on the type of motors. The thing is, if it's too hot to hold in your hand, the motor will probably still be ok, but close to being too hot. So to keep a margin of error, if you can't hold it in your hand, it's too hot :) Stick to that rule and you'll be fine
@KmanRuffian7 жыл бұрын
Yes I know it is a rule of thumb. But a temperature as a rule of thumb would be more precise and useful. Someone as knowlegeable and connected as Joshua should be able to get a rule of thumb temp from motor manufacturers. Or come up with one based on his experience and testing... Plus as someone who appreciates a scientific approach to things I would think he'd be interested in coming up with a rough safe temp.
