Man, this is quintessential Beth---completely possessed, in the moment, raw, laying it all out there, talent exploding forth in every direction....as if a single, continual scat. She's so imaginative and untethered here. I know she's bumping up on 50, so no one could keep this up, but still, this is clearly Beth in embryonic form!

SLANT described Beth Hart as emaciated, wild-eyed, and generally looking like dug up-death in this 1999 episode of VH1 Hard Rock Live. But SLANT also notes that when Hart launched into 'Am I the One' and she 'proceeded to deliver a blues performance, the likes of which the reviewer had ever seen before or since.' 'She wasn't just wrestling with pesonal demons in that performance, she outright flayed those demonds on stage in front of God and everybody.' ', Hart turned the act of singing into an out-of-body experience, something both intensely physical and tangibly metaphysical.' SLANT wrote that Billboard was absolutely correct when it dubbed Beth Hart 'the stuff of icons.' It amazed me that that while she looked and probably felt half-past dead, she still dug so deed and delivered an unrestrained live performance worthy of her phenomenal talent. This shows that she has an iron will, an uncomprising work ethic, and is a true master of her art.

Jesus Fucking Christ...I hadn't seen this performance before. Was this performance from October 15, 1999 and aired on VH1 Live on January 8, 2000? (Is this correct?). At 27 years old and, in spite of being in the deepest, darkest hole, Beth is at the top of her game here with her own music, songs, and explosive voice.
