@@banklikefrankwhite1, as an adjective, "monotone" and "monotonous" can mean the same thing. "Monotonous" also has a more metaphorical meaning but that is basically derived from the literal meaning anyway. Generally a sound that changes in tone, e.g. music, would be considered more interesting than a monotone, thus "monotonous" has come to be used to describe something unchanging that is thus dull and boring.
