After suffering a near-fatal stroke in 2004 despite being fit & active 50yr old I was left a disabled wheelchair user which can mean that you become invisible to many people who talk to your carer/wheelchair pusher and not to you sitting in it but after having someone in a supermarket actually rest their shopping basket on me, I decided enough was enough! Although I am generally wearing trousers or leggings, I recalled after watching many of your Sooo relevant videos that I used to be a very stylish dresser so I set my teeth, trawled my wardrobe, and dug out many much more colourful and stylish blouses/tops& T's. I started going more regularly to my hairdresser (he gave me a super tip too by telling me that hairdressers always notice a clients shoes because often they are looking over and down) so I went through my fotwear and threw out anything that I wore because they were comfy and slipper-like and I invested in some gorgeous & ultra comfy Avaiva flats and several pairs of bright mocassins -(I've always loved red shoes). Now I never go out (even to a hospital appointment) without looking as good as I can with my hair clean and styled, face made up just as I did in my working days and wearing something colorful and noticeable jewellery too and have received many wonderful comments and BOY! do I feel good about myself again! Your wonderful advice had a lot to do with this. So thank you so very much for helping me make that quantum leap.

Thank you, Helen for sharing such a positive story. As women we tend to lose our confidence as we age. And when you mix a health concern a divorce or any other major lifestyle change to that we can lose ourselves. When we start to make our selves and sense of self worth a priority we can be that wonderful woman we know that is still in there. Nothing is more beautiful in this world that a woman with confidence in herself!😊

At 78 I dress up when I go out. Went to a doctors appointment wearing a coral silk blouse with a necklace with a mother of Pearl pendant and glass beads held in place by silk strands that I designed and made. I wore the blouse over khaki pants and turned heads every where I went. Who says you have to look elderly, just because you are!

I’m 63 and I avoid those “mature” brands. I think their tunic tops, big colorful florals and 3/4-length sleeves are really aging. My goal is “classic but modern” style, in an understated way. I do incorporate trends I love and ignore the rest and only wear colors that I know suit me.

I saw a picture of myself in a cardigan and that was all I needed to see to get rid of every cardigan I owned. As for capri-length pants: they draw attention to your ankles and should only be worn if you have slim ankles. I had three of them: one had large enough cuff and hem I was able to lengthen them. The others I made into cargo shorts: I cut them off and used the fabric I removed ti make extra pockets on them..

Great video! Bras..I never would have dreamed I’d buy a minimizer because I’m only a c cup..but WOW what a great way to keep those blouse buttons from gapping at the bustline. And belts…I cringed when I spent 150 bucks on a classic black belt…I’ve had that belt for about 12 years now and it’s my go to that adds instant polish to any outfit. Thank you!!

@@dammar117 yes! For me, spending 35-40 bucks on an “accessory” item like a belt, was a bit “extravagant”…so it seemed insane at the time to spent that money on “just” a belt…but as Beth says, a good belt will look better over time…and it does! Like a favorite pair of shoes it always feels and looks good - but unlike shoes, they don’t suffer the scuffs and wear that shoes do. That “big purchase” was a teaching moment for me and since then have mindfully “invested” in timeless pieces…great blazer…linen blouses….one great pair of classic denim jeans. Stay well!

Great video Beth! I’ve always been pretty confident in my style, as a rule. I’ve worked very hard to maintain a healthy weight and kept my makeup and clothing timeless, while giving a nod to trends. Both my grandmothers were gifted seamstresses, so I learned at a young age how perfect tailoring can take an outfit from frumpy to fabulous. However, when I turned 60 this year I found myself a little rattled for the first time; suddenly I was questioning everything about my appearance. Your observations about looking great at any age are well-taken and a good reminder that I was on the right track all along. ❤

Thank you. Some great tips and a friendly prod for me to take more care as I’ve felt I’ve become a bit too “comfortable”. I haven’t bought clothes in years; much of what I wear out feels “too dressed up” or out of fashion when my peers all wear puffer jackets, t-shirts, gym pants and sneakers out. Going grey messed with my head too because what I did have didn’t seem to “fit” anymore with the image in the mirror too. I have skirts and dresses but as no-one else wears them, I just end up feeling odd too. Men and women all end up looking the same here as they wear similar casual clothes - mainly all black. However, I would like to make an effort because I’ve noticed I feel blah with much in my wardrobe. Maybe it’s time to ditch some things. 🤣
@BethDjalali
@BethDjalali Жыл бұрын
one thing I've learned is that when you look good you feel good. I put on a cute outfit for me. If you're feeling blah with your wardrobe take baby steps and add a colorful accessory maybe a scarf or statement necklace. But don't worry what others are wearing. If wearing a skirt makes you feel good. Do it! It's the perfect option for a hot summer day.

@@BethDjalali I like that thank you. Ive been thinking about the "types" of clothes that give me that feeling you mention and it's been interesting to come to this realisation. That is, I only just recently decided that I prefer the slim line pants (as opposed to wide pants that taper to the ankle)...and I've got a few of these pants and always revert to wearing the one I like (which is now so old and wearing thin!). Sigh. I should have bought two years ago....

Right on! You were the first KZbin fashion channel that I found in 2020. My search question was can women still wear shorts after 60? Well, indeed they can. I now have about 6 pairs of shorts in my wardrobe and I just added a classic navy linen trouser-type Bermuda short from Talbots. Looks so chic with my navy linen blazer. The Coastal Grandma trend has been around for years. I view it as a type of Ralph Lauren/preppy look. I do have problems with my one bra strap always slipping down. Any suggestions? I have been fitted on a few occasions. You are the best, Beth!

As a women of ample/excessive bust D cup before children, size DD from having children to my current fitted GG (weight remained roughly the same from children to now) my tops are so important as too tight can make me look over big, plunging neck lines help, plus my bustline is at most other womens eye level. My hair is now the same style as my college years long again, as short hair and having to wear a tight hat all day don't go together. Slim trousers or bootlegs but high waisted due my height.Had stopped wearing makeup but still do facials. But have just updated my makeup. My nails are usually painted professionally every six to eight weeks. Again because I was born with man size hands. My body shape is hour glass, but larger size clothes can make it look square. Long legs help so need to buy right trousers and tops to be polished. Get compliments about my tops, generally patterned to hide the bust.

Thanks for the insightful wisdom I have struggled in the past few years after my husband's demise and a double mastectomy and I'm 68 and I don't feel 68 I'd like my clothing and personal style to reflect the age I feel which I'm not sure what that is but it ain't 68

Funny I found you! I have had two years of illnesses ranging from six weeks in hospital with heart problems, a cancer removed from my lung, and last week I stumbled and broke my ankle! Feeling sorry for myself I decided to get my life back so booked facial, massage, new hair style and put away my tracksuits 😊 Next is getting all my pretty clothes out and getting a professional to update my make-up. The option is sitting in a cupboard crying

Good tips. I am still working on finding a belt. I have a very large tummy, love the modest feminine dresses (many w/ elastic waists). and just don't feel good about a belt. I never wear black and so many of my dresses are gentle prints (as single colors may stain and show it very easily) so belt colors that are too stark just show off my 'no-waist', lol.

Hi Beth! Love this video. I’m wondering about the sizing for this too you’re wearing from JMcLaughlin. It looks amazing on you and the color is perfect. I want to order using your link but haven’t worn their clothes before. Any advice for some who carries some weight in the midsection? Great content. I’ve watched several other videos of yours. I am in my mid-60’s. 😊

Welcome! If you are trying J.McLaughlin for the first time I would order your regular size and one size up. They are a slim fit much like Ralph Lauren. I wear a size 8 or medium with their clothes but while I've lost my waist through the years I don't necessarily carry weight in my mid-section. J.McLaughlin has great customer service but they have tightened their return policy in recent months. But I'm a big fan of their clothes, especially their pants. I hope this helps!

I am going to go out on a limb and say this but I find most people over 50 are the ones dressing nice. I went to a Broadway show at night and to my dismay, there were adults and older teens with shorts on!! On another occasion I went to a play and all the adults over 60 were decked out to the 9s. Make up, nice blouses, slacks and shoes (like a post here...even those in wheelchairs were dressed beautifully) were beautifully worn. Those under 40 had jeans on...not even nice ones. I know what you mean though...I find more older women dress nice.

Agree ! As a baby boomer of 70+ yrs old , my friends & I grew up w/ " rules " for dressing appropriately for different occasions ; now , many decades later , we will wear jeans , tees , & sneakers but know the time & place for that vs. " nice " / " dress outfits " for church , dinners out , funerals , work meetings , etc. It's also a matter of how you feel about yourself & choose to present yourself - not flashy or trendy or too young or covered in designer labels , but true to who you are . 🥰

Thank you for inspiring me to finally "go through my closet" and pitch out what is outdated. The two things that I concentrate the most on, to help me feel younger, is my skincare and teeth. I really upped my skincare 7 years ago when I had to have Moh's surgery to remove a "spot" on my nose. It took 27 stitches to close it all up. Because of my Korean skincare regime, I can say the scar is barely visible and my skin looks better now at 59 than it did when I was in my 40's. And teeth, dingy yellow teeth really age you. Yearly dental appointments and using a teeth whiting toothpaste to help chase away those dingy yellow teeth really helps me feel confident and younger.

Thank you Beth. I so love your advise. Would you please address the proper etiquette when we wear a hat (not baseball cap please) to a women's lunch? Do we remove it? do we rock it? and also I so love belts but when I look at myself from the side my tummy area is not the best. should I care? should I have tuck the shirt? Ooooooh do I need Beth advise. Cheers!!!
@BethDjalali

Women don't have the same rules for hats as men do. We rarely remove them when we're indoors. Experiment with a half tuck tee or blouse, then a full tuck. Then try a belt cinched underneath your bust.

Regarding bras, I have been wearing the extremely comfortable Bella bodies bras from Australia for at least 10yrs, similar to a sports bra, no underwire, has adjustable straps and is so nice to wear that you could wear them to bed. I never had issues until I was put on cortisone and gained 20kgs in a very short space of time. So I needed to wear a bra to bed for a while, until dancing every night in my pjs got the weight off, . Still love their bras, they are the best!

Honestly, you can make any color work. too many of us think we have to change our jewelry, neutral color scheme or only choose items that make us look younger or thinner. Do certain colors look better than others? Absolutely, but I love to color outside the lines. I suggest you do the same. Fashion should be FUN!

Don’t give up. I’m over here looking and feeling cute. I wear less t shirts now and favorite a cute blouse with my jeans. Feels WAY more feminine, cute, relevant and like I “tried”. You can do it. I started by stepping out of my comfort zone and trying different styles instead of assuming it wouldn’t look good. Then get out there with your shoulders back and a big smile!
