This has always been their style; they make worlds to explore, not narrative-driven games. I prefer them to make their games, not copy other studios ideas, because I like variety. Most RPG games have quite limited, quite linear stories, with a small number of significant choices. The lack of real choices is masked by complex dialog trees that account for player behaviour with a line or two of flavour conversation, but doesn't really affect the experience very much. I don't really find that to be much more satisfying to play, but each to their own. As far as streamlining/dumbing down is concerned, that is a factor in most long-running franchises, since the audience for games has expanded from core games enthusiasts to half the population of the planet. In Bethesda games, like many others, this has resulted in system simplification and increased hand-holding, to the detriment of both gameplay immersion and dialog engagement. This is more of a problem, in my opinion, than the core philosophy of Bethesda narrative design.

I love Skyrim , but the story isn't the gameplay... I played a mod recently Titled Coven Of Crones... It blew my mind, the story stuck out and made me wonder... Why wasn't each character in Skyrim this way? Why couldn't I just figure out the reason who the Forsworn were ? Why were the Hagravens so under-utilized? I wanted to know more... Oh and Fallout 4 should not have started the player at the top left of the map, that impeded the motion of freedom. Shooting games should be somewhat linear as I still don't like them being a level-up system. If I were to change Fallout 4 it would be to remove the entire level up system and utilized only attachments and gear. The story of Shaun and the Wife/Husband Dying Dynamic should have been that whole game's focus and then the horror that is the uncertainty of what might happen would be better.

There's two false dichotomies being put down here: 1. Player Action vs Player Dialogue These things aren't mutually exclusive, and from a design standpoint they're one in the same. Intimidation and violence should be as valid of a tactic as guile and gib. 2. Dynamism vs. Depth It's not a question of sacrificing layers to any given quandry, it's a question of competence. As in, how competent you are in telling a good story while also keeping the player actionable. The entire premise of this video falls flat on it's face and acts more like a red herring than useful critique. I'm going to keep beating people over the head with this cudgel until they get it. Play Fallout: New Vegas. It has no issues weaving any of these concepts together. I realize that fallout 3 and skyrim are so old now that they're people's "bar" for good storytelling, but it's just too sad to think about when bethesda has done so much better in the past.

It didn't seem so bad at first, 3 and Skyrim still felt like it had something, Fallout 4 is when i started noticing it the most, the dialogue wheel like you mentioned, only 4 choices and they are vague, i am glad Extended Dialogue Interface exists to get past that. Fallout 4 was my first Bethesda game that i never bought due to how it launched, 4 times the size of fallout 4 but not 4 times the content, and the bugs and scandals... Ew... Then Starfield, even worse than 76... I'm worried about the Oblivion Remake and TES6 will handle. I doubt i even want to touch Fallout 5.

It's a video game, if it doesn't come in the form of an engaging cutscene i don't care. Imagine if a movie would stop after 23 minutes and ask you to read a book to get what's going on from there on after. Hollywood would be bankrupt within a year. If i want to read a book i will read a book by an author that actually knows how to write and not some hack they call "writers" in the video games industry today. The paper plane analogy is kinda dumb in the context of Bethesda games which have a reputation for players spending a lot of time in, vanilla and modded. Seems he thinks because a player can be invested in something other than the "story", they will never be invested in the story because they did the one thing they were invested in and then dropped the game. Yeah, maybe I did spend the first 30 hours of Fallout 4 building or scrounging for building materials. But do you know what I did after that? I went and played the rest of the game. Having the story be "half arsed" when I get to the story is pretty disappointing and it seems they took it to heart when working on Starfield, but then they gutted the base building anyway so maybe the story isnt the only thing thats been folded into a paper plane and thrown into the bin.

bethesda has gotten rid of all their actual game developers and replaced them with activists and that is why they cannot create anything and just reskin and add micro transactions to try and squeeze out every penny from their existing games. Yes, the writing in Skyrim is so awful you're still complaining about it 13 years later! Maybe if you provided an example of some game whose narrative is presented better you could improve your argument. That said, look at Starfield's credits. Three times as many producers (i.e., people with fingers in the pie) as there are quest writers. Even so, my biggest complaint is the quests aren't integrated into each other. Obvious things you should be able to do you can't (like arrest the guy in the FC quest). The emissary doesn't seem to know you saved everyone. Your parents show up and stand knee-deep in corpses, telling you how much *that* dead character liked their cookies. Oddly, the coffee guy at Paradiso is the only one that seems to interact with Unity. Etc. Every response the player makes leads to the same result, so...

I have to disagree. Imagine for a moment if your game had no setting at all. No purpose in any city. Your guild has no story. your quests only ask for 10 goblin axes. @@LocustaVampa I am simply engaging you in discussion. My point remains. Allow me a description. You join the fighters guild. They hand you for Duties, ala Oblivion. But instead of promotions and a unfolding story, you only can collect 10 X of a item, the 2nd mission 10X a item, and the 3rd's a retrieval of a generic Ewer. And then it repeats. You got your sandbox, but it has no meat. No substance. The fault in your argument is you prefer no story at all, assuming the game can be a sandbox where nothing matters. If you enjoy that, play risk of Rain 2. It's a good game, but just as Vapid story wise. It should be noted as well for this argument, there is no book, dialogue, or world detail allowed. Anything that can convey a 'Why' should be removed. This is the direction Bethesda is veering. They -Can- cater to you and me alike. Make a good story, a really good one, And still provision the sandbox experience. The fault here is that it takes effort. By saying you don't care for the story, you indirectly also want to encourage Bethesda to demean and devalue the product we both receive. Starfield's failure is a direct consequence of bad story. And skyrim's faults are also a consequence of poor story. Dawnguard is beloved because it tries to tell a decent story. Say what you want about Serana, but you wouldn't care if she was released from her tomb and just stared at you forever. So I encourage you to at least lend a voice when it comes to Bethesda's poorer and poorer story work. It's not just the main quest. Its every quest.
