Just because we don't know of a similar thing happening, doesn't mean it can't happen or hasn't happened before. @@Michael-rt5so Every exclusivity deal we've ever seen has come with some sort of marketing. Not just for PlayStation but certainly with every exclusive they've had til now. It's their whole thing. Especially with the hype behind WuKong you can't convince me Sony of all publishers wouldnt want to draw a correlation between them and such a hit especially in China where they've put major focus. Unless there's a law that you can point to that would be keeping them from running marketing for it I think I'ma stay at my same level of reaction. These are first time devs working on a major AAA game that came out with optimization issues that still aren't fixed. They said the reason they aren't coming to Xbox is optimization. Why are we so quick to insinuate devs are lying? That line of logic is agenda driven.

@@thepews1511 Yes Sony has a cadence of doing things a certain way, but that is not a rule and as we've seen recently, they've been changing the way they do things. Typically they would own their published IPs, but they don't own Stellar Blade. Typically their games launched solely on PS, but Helldivers 2 launched day one on PC. A cadence for doing things one way is not a rule and can change at any point. That is moreso my point. Unless there is a law preventing them from doing a deal like this, blindly believing that they wouldn't do it is a bit extreme. You ask why they would do a deal like this because they would rather draw a correlation between the game and PS, but that's exactly what happened with Baldur's Gate 3 last year. PS basically got a timed exclusive with the benefit of rival hardware looking far inferior. Normal exclusives don't get that extra benefit. If a company like Sony could legally do this to stomp out the competition, I have no doubt in my mind that they would do it (and likewise if the roles were reversed). Whether they made a deal or not, we can't possibly know with the information that is out there, so why blindly go all in one way or the other? Ofc we can believe whatever we want, like how we both doubt there's an exclusivity deal, but to rule it out as a possibility is naive.

What you're saying makes sense, so I don't really fault you for having such a conclusive answer and wanting it to be a open and shut case. My problem with nearly everyone who seems to have very similar perspectives and such definitive ones, is that I don't think I can genuinely think of many or even any examples of folks carrying over the same thought processes to just about every point of contention regarding Xbox, and it seems to be with just about everything. While I do overall agree, don't think this was like an official full exclusive, not at all. And with them being first time big triple A developer, it completely seems plausible that they would have issues optimizing and bringing the game to launch. I can see them totally agreeing to take a bag of money to get help getting the game cross the finish line. Which likely would also mean "pause what you're doing on of the platforms in order to use more resources to get things out quicker, then once out, continue finishing the version you were working on, on the other platform you had been paused deving for. Not sure if you remember this, but every time we would hear about something maybe skipping or having to be pushed back on the release for Xbox, we would regularly see folks come out and announce how PlayStation just received another exclusive game thanks to Xbox delays. We saw from many individuals that PlayStation get's a lot of "Defacto exclusives", in fact Colin himself used this very verbiage once before, also regarding Xbox. And the fact of the matter is, PlayStation as in fact, has had games exclusively on their platform that also did not have any kind of PlayStation specific marketing tie to the PlayStation, and we don't need to go very far to find this. This exactly what occurred with games like Persona and Yakuza, before they made their way over to Xbox. Folks are being quick to turn down the idea that PlayStation wouldn't oppose doing some kind of deal or "not so deal" to continue a little bit of side damage to the overall perception of Xbox. If everyone and their mother are talking about Xbox having power issues and optimization issues, you don't think Sony had sniffed that up and heard this to be occurring?? You don't think Sony would at all consider a new strategy?? Yes, Sony is typically slow moving to change up their approaches to things, but this does not mean they are not willing or wanting to change and do things differently sometimes. Imagine an approach where they are also essentially achieving an outcome where something looks like an exclusive to your platform, and essentially a cost-free approach. They don't even have to pay for one of the biggest games releasing to be perceived as an exclusive...and it makes our competition look way worse than us??

Something I realised recently is that we all make fun of Horizon for quickly being forgotten by releasing next to very big games (botw and elden ring), but another major studio that is in the same realm is Bethesda, atleast their last two big releases, both of which also released to big games like witcher 3 and baldur's gate 3. Who knows maybe Elder Scrolls 6 will release very close to another very big game like Half Life 3 or something.

But tbh the number of digital sales are so dramatically high that it almost doesn't even really matter because the vast vast majority are simply digital. So it would be the difference of finding hard data that gives us the result of "Many many many many users buy majority of games digital verus many many many users by majority digitally. Matty, we spoke briefly on Twitter the other day about Red Rising and Golden Son. I hope you can give us an update once you’ve finished it, and especially once you’ve made it through Morning Star. I read this series for the first time in Spring ‘23, and after Lightbringer came out I went back and reread the whole series again only a few months later. It’s so good! It’s the easiest sci fi series recommendation for almost anyone. Another one I’d check out is Sun Eater. I read that whole series this summer and also loved it. Lots of similarities between Darrow and Hadrian Marlowe from Sun Eater.

I don't know why lately people have been surprised by exclusive deals... like it's the business! Sony offer their help publishing and development wise in exchange of an exclusivity window and that's perfectly normal. So I guess they should've just help publish, develop the game and reap nothing? People also forget Microsoft used to be aggressive back in the 360, games like Mass Effect, Bioshock, Oblivion, Ninja Gaiden were temporarily exclusive to the 360 for years... I didn't see the outcry then.

1:30:33 Yes! The Mutant Mayhem movie is lit! I'm a long time Turtles fan (grew up with the 90's show) and one of the peeps that really wanted Rocksteady to do a (dark) Batman-esque game with TMNT. But I loved the way they had them as "younger" teenagers just messing around. Their first real fight in the movie is hilariously clumsy and so well animated! It's got heart man! And the villain is pretty cool and gruesome (scary even, the end sequences crossed this off my list for a "watch with my kids movie" and put it up there with Spider-Verse)

The question about HD2 on xbox was a good one but I think the answer was wrong. The installed base is much smaller and they don't buy games in the volume that would make it worth Sony making that move. The reason Xbox did it wasn't to "play ball" it was because they need those games to bring in money and they aren't doing enough of that on their own console.

Moving someone into the gamepass ecosystem would be the long play, where selling copies would be the short play. Convincing someone to jump from Playstation/Steam (70% * $70 = $50) to Gamepass PC/Ultimate ($12-20) brings someone into their ecosystem where they might buy a console, another game, accessories, DLC and they make 100% after all development/shipping costs. Yes, they can make more money in the short term by selling their games elsewhere, but they build their own ecosystem by convincing you to get the "cheaper option" on their platform.

Nobody said the game should’ve revived interest in Prince of Persia, but it didn’t even sell well you can’t say you’re game didn’t sell well. Make another one when you make a game when you produce anything as a business you have a certain return on investment that has to be met before green light project. If you can’t guarantee that a project will get you a certain return on the amount of money you put towards that project, you do not put that project out there. They put out an excellent project and the gamer the consumers did not buy it. I know so many people said yes I’m going to buy it once it’s on sale. They automatically went out. Let me get this right away, this company has a history of discounting video games I will just wait. Here we are standing to the side complaining no don’t close the studio. Don’t move the people to new jobs. Make another one of those bangers. Why would they make another one? You didn’t buy the last one? I think for most gamers deals are better than acquisitions. It may lock down a game but it doesn’t lock everything down. SFV was exclusive but now SF6 is multiplat. Acquisitions are proving risky. I think Sony probably regret buying Bungie, Microsoft needed to jump through so many legal loopholes to get ABK and probably are unlikely to chase another acquisition of that size and don't even get me started on Embracer. I would say these new numbers mean the Series S was kind of a fail. It was meant to flood the market as being the cheapest way to play. It's kind of refreshing that Blooper admitted it's made "sh*tty games" and believes that they are done making them. Instead of the usual capping or blaming reviews or gamers or whatever. Sometimes it just takes the right partner and/or project to get on the right track.

The one aspect of Sony bringing their games or anything over to Xbox, is that PlayStation does seem to be more okay with sending over their own 1st party games to other places, while not so much doing the same with their 3rd party timed exclusives. Looks like they don't always make too much profit of off some of these games, depending on the deals that were made. Some of these games receive marketing, or a big enough money bag to keep it off Xbox, that PlayStation ends up with a smaller pay out, which to me means that at least for some of these 3rd party games, the deal more so is power play to show dominance over other competition, to be able to say this game is only here and nowhere else. It's more about using these games as a way to market the console. It was reported that Sony received something like $8million from Stellar Blade in royalties on the back end which is certainly, essentially nothing to Sony lol, and yet we see PlayStation porting out some of their first party games faster than they are with allowing some of these 3rd party teams to go port their games elsewhere, even in some cases porting their games to only PC, nevermind Xbox. I do have a running theory that remains totally plausible - PlayStation may in fact be much more willing to port their 1st party/2nd party developed games to their places because PlayStation/Sony have officially shifted their strategies. Their first party used to be the thing to attract players to the console and were not as concerned with how much revenue they saw. This is not the case anymore, not only do they need and want their games to sell well and extract as much out of them as they can, but this is also at a time where some of their IP are now big enough where they can legitimately see a good number of additional sales when they port them to other places. Which also shifts how they see their games. It means they are looking at big numbers. So, when they see something that has big IP energy and brand power/ strong brand leverage and see it not performing as strongly as it should or could be, I do believe they are going to much more seriously consider what they can get out of porting the game to other places. While beginning to use some 3rd party time or full exclusives as their way to still utilize the old way of having specific games be the "man thing" to attract players to your platform.
