Dio is one of a kind, he truly transcends musical genres. There's a lot of great metal/hard rock bands and an endless list of great vocalists.... but Dio is truly on a tier of his own. His voice, his lyrics, his theatrics performing live... there will never be anyone quite like Ronnie James Dio. Especially with Tony Iommi/Geezer Butler, Black Sabbath, as his "backing" band as Heaven & Hell in the 2000s. He was great in the 80s and just as goosebumps inducing in 2012.

"Master Storyteller" is the perfect description of Dio. He's one of, imo THE greatest rock/metal vocalist of all time. Not just because his voice is absolutely stunning, but also the lyrics and incredible theatrics while performing.... he's like a great fantasy novel come to life in the form of metal ballards. What's even crazier is that Dio sounds even better live than he does on studio albums. From the 80s until the mid 2000s with Heaven & Hell, Dio's voice somehow got even better with age. Dio, especially with Black Sabbath/Heaven & Hell backing him is truly some of the greatest modern music ever created, bar none it's the best rock/metal music you can find. The most remarkable thing about Dio is that, according to him, he's 100% self taught and never took a vocal lesson in his life.... and yet he, like you said, he's larger than live and completely commands not just the stage, but the entire arena.

Ronnie was undoubtedly one of the best metal vocalists of all time. But he's a legend because of his songwriting and his stage presence as well. He learned that because at this point he was almost 25 years into his career, having started as a teenager. It also let him figure out his own style. Great reaction!

True.. But it lead to the split, where Campbell left. Dio wanted a great and over the top tour, and made Bain and Campbell to give away a big part of their credits to fund the stagework, which also meant more crew etc. Bain and Appice were not over the top about it, while Campbell felt that RJD should've taken a bigger share of the bill since it was kind of his "dream". Kind of sad, since it was a good team. Though I would claim Goldy is a better shredder, I feel Vivs contribuition was slightly more memorable. Better riffs and contribution to songs like "Last in line".

@@andreaspedersen3952 The thing is though, what has Campbell done since? Picked up a paycheck in boring Def Leppard, whereas what everyone remembers him for is the great Dio albums of the 80's. If Viv had seen the bigger picture maybe he'd be a more significant figure in rock/metal today rather than the guy that used to play for Dio. We're still watching and admiring this document that Viv unfortunately didn't play on through his own choice. I would agree though that Craig is the better soloist, it's a pity Ronnie never tried the dual lead guitarist thing at some point.

You can thank Ritchie Blackmore for that. He saw the way Ritchie was on the road when Elf opened for Deep Purple, and when they were in Rainbow together. Ronnie told a story once where they were on tour in England and there were fans waiting around the stage door when the band arrived for soundcheck. It was pouring rain, but they had driven a couple of hours to see the show. Some of them were there specifically to see Ritchie and get autographs, like any fan would. Ronnie spent about a half-hour or so talking with them and signed autographs for everyone. After the show, they're waiting by the stage door, in the rain, to see Ritchie. Ritchie comes out the door, gets immediately in their waiting car, and drives back to the hotel. Never even acknowledged them. From that point on, Ronnie vowed that he'd never treat anyone who came to see him like that, and he'd stay until everyone got something signed. He also made certain that the guys in the band did the same.

Funny that you mentioned Dio in the studio. He always needed to bring his own microphone, because his voice was too strong for regular mics. Dio sang a short fragment for the movie "Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny", and there's a "making of" where they discussed this.

Mr. Dio. Those of us who have been listening to him since the very early 70's, never get tired of watching someone admire his unequaled talent. This was a brilliant tour and one of the best stage shows I have ever seen. His ab lib section that connected "Last in Line" to the start of "Holy Diver" is one of my favorite live moments of his. So tender and then so powerful. Ronnie got in the habit of bringing his own microphone when he would guest on others material. The reason, he would often overload their microphones from sheer volume and sound pressure. There is a great story of this when Dio did his part for the movie "The Pick of Destiny". He blew their microphone right out of commission! Twisted Sister lead sister Dee Snider recently said that Ronnie wasn't a good front man. Just absurd. All the times I saw him it was nearly impossible to take my eyes off him. THAT is all the evidence I need! Again, his trumpet training is probably the single most important part of his history. Getting to the high level of proficiency that he did, (could have gone to Julliard) really taught him breath control and how not to over push. Everything else just came from Heaven. He never warmed up. Smoked, loved beer and would walk out cold and do what we just heard. No one will ever be able to match that again!

Dee is crazy if he is saying that. If there is anyone that was the optimal frontman and even more so the optimal heavy metal singer it was Dio, i cant even imagine what a representation of a metal frontman would be today if it wasnt for Dio.
@AlexxxNZ
@AlexxxNZ Жыл бұрын
You need to read Dee's full comments to get what he was saying. I will do my best to paraphrase. He was quantifying how different singers entertain crowds. Some (like himself) may not have the best voices (his words) but put on a big show by running around the stage, getting right in the crowds face, get them to sing and keep them crowd on the edge of their seat. He called that style "front man". Others, like Dio, use the power of their voice to keep a crowd entertained and don't have to go over the top with the rock n roll antics and crowd interaction. He called that "performer". Others again, like Alice Cooper, put together a super tight performance, where everything is perfectly choreographed like a Broadway show to make the most entertaining thing they can, barely acknowledging the crowd. Like in a theater. And as you can see in this clip, Dio doesn't do the "front man" thing (as per Dee's definition), he does the "performer" thing. And that works for him as a musician, and it works for his fans. Dee's comments were fairly typical music nerd comments, in that music nerds like to classify and give names to musical phenomena. It's how we study and learn things 😀 No one is dragging anyone and everything is pretty awesome. Go heavy metal 🤘
@Stefan-
@Stefan- Жыл бұрын
@@AlexxxNZ Dee apparently has his views of what a frontman is and of course has a right to like anyone but i dont agree with his conclusions in this case. A front man to me is someone that really grabs the audience with their expressiveness and performance rather than some silly running around on the stage clownery, Dio really had that connection to the audience which would " keep the crowd on the edge of their seat" and he moved around enough and made everyone feel that they were the chosen one and had some sing alongs and such to get the audience more involved. Some singers seem to prioritise running around over actually singing so that the singing suffers let alone some of the pop artists that dance so that they have to mime to their music since they are so out of breath, that is clearly the wrong priority.

I do have a personal Dio story. I graduated high school in 1982, and immediately started singing in a local rock band. We were doing a gig at a local watering hole, and noticed a commotion toward the front door of the place. At first all we saw was this absolute mountain of a man walk through, followed by two other guys. Those two other guys happened to be Dio himself and his guitarist Vivian Campbell. They sat and had a few drinks while we finished up our set. We had a chance to sit with them and chat for a bit before the end of the night. They turned out to be really nice, down to earth guys. Meeting this Giant of a manis among the best memories of my life. In 1991 my Father took me with him backstage to meet the bands. Had no idea of who they were cause I was 5. Meet Ronnie and for the following 19 Years he always took his time to say HI to a kid that at first meeting was a bit shy, hiding behind his father.

Hi Beth! Happy to see your reaction video again, especially you're in a cheerful ambiance ; but when you shed some tears just like the way you did the other day it can bring sadness in your followers heart; cause me, mostly, i had to be brave to continue the viewing of your reaction video on Lara Fabian "je suis malade". Be blessed Beth. Keep up the good work.

Rob Zombie is another absolute giant on stage despite being only 5' 4". You nailed the stage presence description, Beth. True frontmen have a way of using the whole stage with body language and feeling. Great video!

The 86 tour was awesome. I was at a coliseum show with only about 5,000 people and Ol Ronnie performed like the place was packed to the rafters. He was an absolute legend for his showmanship, performing ability and pure "show must go on" commitment

Dio has a very special place in my life. The first metal album I listened to in 1986 was his Last In Line album. I watched his concert live twice. I was very sad and cried when I heard the news of his death. He has a very special place in the music world not only with her voice but also with her personality.I miss him so much.

12:03 Jack Black has a story about when Ronnie James Dio came to record Kickapoo for Tenacious D, he had brought his own microphone. Told by the producers that it wasn't necessary,," he went on to immediately shred their "state-of-the-art" microphone. He quipped "That always happens…" Dio was obviously fully aware of his own vocal powers. Dude seemed like a really nice guy too. I miss him a lot.

I lost 4 friends in a car crash. It was right after Dio released the single "Last in Line" and I learned the rhythm part before I Joined the Army. When I got there, my best friend and three idiots got hammered and drove the wrong way on the highway. They smashed into a woman driving home from some family get-together with her two daughters. It was May 9. Four days before my birthday. When I got the news about these idiots dying and killing a family... I went a little bent and sat in my room and played "Last in Line" and "Holy diver" along with the cassette over and over and over and over very loud. RJD is awesome. He rescued me. You are so beautiful. The very idea of a young Irish lass. You're impressive. They can afford pentatonic scales in Ireland now? With the money generated by the Commitments? Cranberries, Judas Priest, Tesla, The Verve Pipe, The violent femmes, Elvis Costello and Five Finger Death Punch! You in?

Dio was a small man with the voice of a giant. He was an amazing performer and according to many who knew him a kind and generous person. When he went on stage he wasn't just singing for the audience, he was transferring his energy into them. I have really been hoping someone would do a reaction to some of his very early work when he was a doowop style singer, those performances show that he could have done any genre and still have been just as amazing.

It might interest you to know that this guy goes back musically to the early 1960s and sang as a pretty typical male vocalist at that time with a sort of rockabilly style, just light years from this. Check it out by his Wikipedia or discography.

HE is the ONE and ONLY ! I had a real bad bike crash in Aug. 84 and stayed in coma for about 7 or 11 days, don't remember. My parents, sitting beside my bed in hospital's I.C.U. playing Dio songs to my ears (with kinda tape recorder) and some day I opened up my eyes again and started my "second life" (with the age of 18) So DIO (what means GOD in english, some might not know ?) saved my life somehow 🙂 and therefore he's been theme of my first tattoo. Dio is an all time hero of mine so naturally I loved seeing this video Beth. I don't know if he's been suggested to you but I really hope that you'll do a video on Indian singer Girish Pradhan as he fits the Dio mould but has his own brilliant style too and right now he's the hard rock singer to shout about.
