According to Dio, he never took vocals lessons. He was a classical trumpet player before he started singing. He used breathing techniques he learned from playing the trumpet and applied it to his singing. He was such an amazing talent and It was a privilege to see him live on many occasions.

Goes with the other saying " it's not how many notes you can play , but which ones to leave out. " It maybe impressive when someone plays a million notes a minute but to give it some room to let the notes breath. Gives the notes being played more power. That's why when someone sustains a note it gives such emphasis on what has been played if that makes any sense.

I still remember the day he died, 11 years ago yesterday. I was teaching and one of my students, who was usually very active and talkative in class, was all too quiet that particular day. I didn't make much of it until by the end of the class he he just said "Dio" in a really low voice, his head hanging down from his neck. I had no idea he knew or liked Dio. We talked loads after class and I realised how fortunate I was to have seen him live 7 times! 🤘 The most amazing thing about him singing live was how his voice just filled all the spaces in the venue. It was just so huge and dense. I've never heard another singer come even close.

Separate comment at end of video.. I found it very reaffirming that you mentioned the need emotional backing to the vocals. I find that, in this song in particular, that the entire song was sung from an emotional standpoint as if the song was actually being sung by the person it portrays. You can literally hear the pain, the loss, the faith in the wizard and the subsequent shock and bewilderment at the end result that leads to a desperation of what to do now that he is gone, etc. Combined with the masterful guitar work and drums.. this makes this song, to me, into one of those epic saga type songs that would be backed by a full symphonic orchestra when done live.. whether it actually was or not. You'd be surprised how few songs actually reach that level for me.. and this is one of them. Interestingly, the song "Uninvited" by Alanis Morrissette is another which reaches that level.. and I am NOT a fan of hers by any means.. I know like 2 songs only. I heard this song while at work and was like: Holy crap.. what song is this and who sings it??? That was epic. Anyway.. I am prattling on. I will end with another suggestion for a Dio song... "As Long As It's Not About Love" from the album Magica. In fact, I highly recommend just listening to the album itself.. it is a concept album and tells a story with each song being part of that story.. and ends with Dio himself narrating the story that the songs told. Well worth an hour of your time to check out. ;)

This song changed my life! I bought the album because I liked the cover and I had seen that the Deep Purple guitarist was in the band (I had a couple of their singles). I took the album out looked at side 2 and thought "only 2 songs? Look at the length of them." Headphones on and I was enraptured. By the end I could see a Rainbow in my head. All I knew was that this was the greatest thing ever and I would love this music forever. Over 40 years later I am still a fan of rock metal and prog. Dio had some career. His first recordings were as part of a doo wop band very early 60s. Check out this classic track... kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6ibfoiKZZWUgZI I first saw him 1980 and last time 2009 and he was still as great. Never lost his voice. He was also an absolute gentleman. He is on 3 of the greatest ever metal albums from 3 different bands. No one else has managed similar. Legend, total legend. 11 years gone yesterday... RIP

This is awesome! I've been listening to Rainbow non stop these last two weeks! Specially the albums "Rising" and "Long live rock n roll". Stargazer has been on repeat for the last two days. Dio's singing is pure awesomeness. I was thinking to myself "I wonder if Beth Roars made video about Stargazer, if not, I will suggest it." Searched for it on KZbin, and here we are! :) Keep it up ! Love your videos! 👍🇸🇪

Loved it! Great reaction. I also watched The CHarismatic Voice's reaction to him as well. I am old enough to remember the release of this album, let alone the concert tour. Ronnie James Dio made any band he was in great. Imagine, he didn't really want to sing. Where would be we be if he didn't try? Missing some legendary songs is where.

Brilliant analysis, Beth! Certainly one of Ronnie's greatest gifts and what made him such an amazing singer and performer was his intelligence (emotional and intellectual) and the obvious thought and passion he put into his singing. If you want to hear and experience the other stunning end of the rainbow, so to speak, please, please check out the Rainbow song "Rainbow Eyes." Yes, he was the greatest hard rock/metal singer ever, but he was so much more. The tenderness and gentleness and subtlety of which he was capable was beyond words. I really wish he would have explored his full range more than he did... but the body of work he did leave us with is simply staggering.

Ronnie was a trumpet player, so that probably helped with his breath control. You should listen to its sister song, which is the next song on the album, A Light in the Black. It's a fast paced song compared to this slow one.

Every Dio song nearly brings me tears, but this song always has tears running down my face. I miss the man dearly, he was a true gift to the rock/metal world. Not only was he a great singer, but he was a great human. He loved his fans..and they knew it...he made sure of it. He let them know that he wouldn’t be Dio without them. We were a part of him...and a part of us all died when he did.
