It cracks me up to hear someone questioning how healthy Dio's technique was. The man's singing career lasted over 50 years (1957-2008) and he was as powerful near his death as the many times I saw him live in his last 20 years. He commanded and technique obeyed.
You're absolutely right. I saw him perform in 2006 and it was nothing short of amazing. Catch the Rainbow brought me to tears.

I don’t find it at all out of line to ask that question. Ronnie Dio left the dulcetonic bodies of many imitators along the musical highway, as they too, assumed they could do what he did. For a guy who was just over 5 ft tall, he became a giant the moment he sang. Ronnie James Dio is a metal GOD. RIP.
@jimshelby4065 жыл бұрын
Jason Trinque - He was 5’4” not 5’0”. I know 4” may sound trivial to most of us but when you’re 5’4” tall 4” is a huge difference.

I’m admitting up front that what I’m about to say will sound dumb. I get it. At the same time, Im at the point in my life that I don’t care. That being said...I really enjoy your reactions as well as how you dissect what’s going on vocally and explain the how’s, why’s and where for’s etc. BUT...by far my favorite part of the entire experience has got to be that adorable little roar! Love it!

Love this video. Dio... I loved how he put everything out there on the stage. No matter hwo many shows he did he would give everyone 115% and sing with such passion and emotion. Dickinson, Dio and Halford are the trinity of vocalists, I feel, Dio is the best of them all. Live Evil is a double live album from Black Sabbath... 1982 I believe, and it is just a clinic all the way through
@uoabigaillevey5 жыл бұрын
Completely agree with you on the trinity. I would add Tim "Ripper" Owens as a runner-up tho. He filled in for Rob Halford for Judas Priest for 2 albums, covered King Diamond nearly flawlessly, and is sometimes the singer for "Dio Disciples" (A tribute band consisting of former Dio band members and various vocalists.) Peace

Wow, your reaction at 2:07 gave me such joy I legit got emotional. I've loved RJD since about '77 or so when my teenaged uncle played me a 45 of Man on the Silver Mountain. Your raw amazement is infectious, and gave me a bit of that 7yr old's me's memories of falling in love with metal vocalists like Bruce Dickinson and Ronnie James Dio. Thanks for that.

RJD pulled me into metal when I was a kid and he was with Sabbath. I was mesmerized by his voice. Through Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and Dio, he dominated any stage he stepped foot on. The ultimate metal story-teller. Legends live on.

This is Dio the solo artist with his band, if I'm not mistaken, after he left the Sabbaths. And since he co-wrote the song, he took it on tour with him as a solo artist.

I believe you are correct, i dont see Tony Iommi and i do believe that is Vinny Appice on the drums but Vinny always plays with him..( even in Sabbath).

Anyone can play anybody's song(s) live, but if they put it on a dvd/blu ray; they will have to pay royalties to the musician or band that they covered. Unless they wrote the song from a their former band, then they won't have to pay royalties. Ozzy sang Sabbath songs. So many musicians cover others songs. It's a tribute.

Thank you so much Beth! I’ve been digging into the various vocal coaches vids and I love how many technical tidbits you throw out. So many of your observations on the mechanics of making sound are things I unconsciously do but hadn’t bothered to really dissect. Pointing out specific ways of modifying mouth shape and breathing and what have you is what I want from these vids. Thank you for your generous analysis!

A truly great singer. Beth, you should watch the Sam Dunn documentaries on heavy metal. You may enjoy them; they give great insights into that world. If you decide to they are called: Heavy Metal: A Headbangers Journey, and The Evolution of Heavy Metal. Sam is an anthropologist, and shows the world, and its culture in a brilliant way.

Dio was an amazing singer... and having a very clear diction. When Dio sings you can hear every single word. That also tells a lot of about vocal tehcnique and how well developed the overtones are.

The wild thing about the late, great, Ronnie James Dio (RIP), was that he was so short, yet, he had one of the most powerful set of lungs for someone of his size, this side of Hell. And, from what I've heard, the nicest guy you'll ever meet.
