I remember one of the times I saw them James jumped down in the crowd during Seek and Destroy. He went row by row screaming "search and" then he'd let a fan scream, "seek and destroy!" He ended on our row. I'll never forget being able to participate. It was 1989, I was 19.

Ya know. This is the first time I think I have seen a reaction to a live version of this song. Most people react to the music video which has clips from a movie spliced in. VERY emotional experience. Also, on the note of them playing on all 7 continents including Antarctica where they played to scientists, they missed an opportunity to play the obvious song they could have played down there, Trapped Under Ice.

Regarding vocal injuries, Metallica toured arenas for some 2 years nonstop, almost daily, in the early 1990s, back when James used to sing like an animal - in a good way, musically, but probably in a bad way from a health perspective. I’m impressed that he has any singing voice at all nowadays!

within thrash metal the only singer I can think of that comes to mind that actually uses vibrato when singing is Joey Belladonna from Anthrax. As you say its not TYPICALLY a style that is suited to it. One of the interesting things about modern Metallica doing One vs the studio recording and old live version is how much James has changed how he sings. He has a older man's voice now, those raw thrash screams of the first 4 albums have been replaced by a much smarter if less aggressive approach to singing. James makes up for it by adding some really cool ornamentation to the live versions of One nowadays. And yes they have changed the tuning for most of their older songs to allow for this different singing approach.

IN my opinion James Hetfield is very underated as a vocalist. He has a voice for sure designed for metal, but he also has a very soft side to his voice that is magic. And the way he sings has one of the best qualities needed to be a great singer. He has passion! He feels the lyrics as he sings them. His voice touches me.

Every one of us that played in Hardcore Punk bands, Straightedge bands, etc. in the 90s sought the sound that Kirk Hammett managed so powerfully with his guitars. It was interesting to hear the variations that James Hetfield used in this version and it's clear that he was staying away from a lot of the higher octaves that he used to pull in the original versions. The callous has scared him off trying some of them I'm sure. There were a lot more sudden jumps in scale that he avoided. Solid as ever though. What a moving show with the war visuals before and during. Never got to see them live unfortunately.

Ms. Roars I have a question for you. As we age so do our voices, they tend to get lower. Is there away to bring back a higher registrar? Is there food or drink one could take to assist with rehabilitation of the vocal chords? Coud surgery restore some of that youthfulness? Geoff Tate for example still can hit the higher range, most singers can't. Is it just to much for a vocalist to get regimented and do the work or is it just a non reversible symptom of aging?
@BethRoars Жыл бұрын
Hey! Your voice is the same as the rest of our body. So general health helps vocal health. So first of all gentle exercise, your body and your voice. Try scales gently moving up into the higher range, take your time and don't push. Eat nutritious food, drink plenty of water (very important) and try to avoid toxins (alcohol, mold, pollution etc). It is also important to note our voices do change as we age so you might just need to adjust your technique to work with this new voice. A good vocal coach can help you immensely. In terms of reversibility, well it depends on what is causing the problem and if there is any damage. You can certainly gain a dramatically more youthful quality whatever your starting point. Will you sounds like you are 20 again, probably not. But with practice and looking after your voice you can sound this an amazing version of the current you!
