The thing that sets Beth apart from some other reactors is that she doesn’t just appreciate the technical aspects of metal music, you can tell she “gets” it and is also a fan. I love it.

I absolutely love the dynamic and emotional range that Daron Malakian's voice covers in this song, from that soft, pure, high harmony in the "I don't think you trust" section to that strangled scream on Father.
@illegal_space_alien3 ай бұрын
While I agree, I wish Daron had realized that A: he has a crap voice, and B: Serj is a world-class vocalist, and kept himself as backing vocals. Later albums suffer from Daron insisting that he sing more.

The way the harmony falls together on the last "In My" near the ending is probably my favourite harmony of all time, and I'm a big harmony fan. It just blends so beautifully. Great reaction and breakdown, and I love the little "pop-up video" style factoids you're putting in!

I can't cite the source but in the past, I read that the name Chop Suey was a result of the label/producer not wanting the song to be called suicide and to remove it from the album (chop suicide). You can hear in the album version at the start of the track in a soft voice "rolling suicide"

The song from name to lyrics to the music composition has so many layers. And is really one of the songs that puts System of a Down above many of the other bands that were around at the time.

SOAD were such a unique band. I like that you touched on how they play with dynamics. I think this is something a lot of people overlook. I said this part on I think Rick Beatos video about the song but the piano at the end is just so lovely. It adds such a beautiful touch.

One of my top SOAD songs I’ve always interpreted the lyrics from the point of view of someone experiencing domestic violence, wanting to leave but not (“Why’d you leave the keys upon the table?”), self blame (“you wanted to”), then convincing themselves there is only one way out
@mastod0n13 ай бұрын
10:18 I think the story of Serj pulling a random book off the shelf and that's how he got the lyric is apocryphal. Because the line "Why have you forsaken me?" is also something Jesus says while on the cross but it doesn't appear in the gospel of Luke, and "I commend my spirit" doesn't appear in the gospels of Matthew and Mark, where the other line comes from. Unless it was a book about bible study. It also fits the theme of the song too well to be happenstance. In my opinion.

First off, amazing review Beth and I love this channel. Regarding "Father into your hands, I commend my spirit." I can buy that SOAD may have randomly picked the Bible for inspiration, but not this quote. According to the Bible these are Jesus's final words before he died on the cross. It has perfect relevance to the story SOAD was telling in this song. The Bible is over 1000 pages and there's no way they randomly selected that passage for their song.
